Familiar faces win Vergennes City Council seats

VERGENNES — Former Vergennes mayor and alderman Michael Daniels and incumbent city council members Renny Perry and Lynn Donnelly on Tuesday were the winners in a five-way race for three seats on the Vergennes city council.

Daniels, who served six years as mayor before stepping down in March 2013, earned 345 votes to lead the race. Perry, a former Vergennes city manager and New Hampshire city official, finished next with 295 votes, while Donnelly, who was appointed a year ago, came in third with 277.

Middlebury passes town office plan; Carpenter and Asermily win selectboard seats

MIDDLEBURY —Middlebury residents on Tuesday voted 915-798 in favor of a $6.5 million bond to erect a new municipal building and recreation center. Voters rejected, by a 955-731 tally, a citizens’ petition that sought to direct the selectboard to instead rebuild or renovate the municipal building and gym at their current location at 94 Main St.

Voters also elected Dean George, Brian Carpenter and Laura Asermily to vacancies on the town selectboard. Incumbent Selectman Craig Bingham was defeated in his bid for a fourth consecutive term on the board.

Middlebury cleared in town office flier flap

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Attorney General’s Office has found no illegalities with an informational flier that Middlebury officials created and mailed to all local residents explaining the details of a new town office building and recreation center proposal that will be decided by voters on Tuesday, March 4.

Local businesses fight Vermont Gas pipeline

MIDDLEBURY — A group of Champlain Valley business owners spoke out against the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project at a press conference this past Tuesday at the Vermont Soap Works factory in Middlebury.

The speakers, led by Vermont Soap CEO Larry Plesant, urged businesses in Addison County not to use natural gas when it arrives here, possibly in 2014. The press conference was organized by the Vermont Public Interest Research Group (VPIRG), a lobbying firm that opposes the pipeline.

MIDDLEBURY — Bret Williams has dutifully “tended bar” at the helm of the Vermont Hard Cider Co. (VHC) for more than a decade.

Now, after taking the company from the brink of bankruptcy to its current status as the second-largest hard cider producer in the world, Williams is ready for his “last call.”

Construction will close Rt. 125 bridge for parts of April-June

EAST MIDDLEBURY — Construction crews are mobilizing heavy equipment for the upcoming replacement of the Sand Hill Bridge on Route 125 in East Middlebury, a project that contractors said will impose some short-term pain for neighbors and travelers in order to generate a finished product in a shorter period of time.

Supreme Court OKs fast food restaurant, Jiffy Mart on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh

FERRISBURGH — The Vermont Supreme Court of Feb. 21 ruled in favor of South Burlington firm Champlain Oil Co. (COCO), which since 2008 has been working to build a gas station, convenience store and fast-food restaurant on the former Route 7 site of the Ferrisburgh Roadhouse.

ANwSU offers JoAn Canning job of superintendent

VERGENNES — The Addison Northwest Supervisory Union board has offered the ANwSU superintendency to current Orleans Southwest Supervisory Union Superintendent JoAn Canning, and the board expects Canning to accept the post on Thursday.

The ANwSU board made the offer on Tuesday morning after Canning, the last candidate standing for the post, made a daylong Monday visit to ANwSU.

UD-3 voters OK lease option

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union residents on Tuesday evening voted 306-118, by paper ballot, to allow the UD-3 school board to negotiate a lease with the town of Middlebury for a Creek Road parcel that would host an 11,500-square-foot recreation facility.
