Salisbury looks into farm worker housing

SALISBURY — The Salisbury Development Review Board is trying to solve an issue with a local dairy farmer and the housing he provides for his farm workers.

Randy Quesnel owns a dairy farm on Creek Road in West Salisbury and employs a number of farm workers who live on the property. The problem is, Salisbury Zoning Administrator Jon Filion has issued at least two notices of violation to Quesnel for housing the farm workers in inadequate quarters that violate local and state statute.

VUHS pegs $6.5 million for facilities

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board on Monday agreed to ask voters in November to approve a $6.5 million bond to fund major repairs and upgrades to the school’s building and site.

Most notably, work would include fixing leaky roofing on the classroom wing; making major improvements and safety upgrades to the school’s auditorium, kitchen and cafeteria; and installing artificial turf on the school’s varsity soccer and lacrosse field and surrounding it with a track.

Local physician transitions solo to electronic records

MIDDLEBURY — Dr. Maxine Fidler has long quipped about the legibility of her handwriting. Copious examples of it could be found in the individual files maintained for the approximately 200 patients in her growing Middlebury practice, Acorn Natural Medicine PLC.

Well, after nine months of after-hours work, Fidler has translated her scrawl-on-paper into what is becoming the universal language of physicians’ offices and hospitals throughout the state: Typed print and crisp charts securely stored and retrieved through a computer database.

Hoffer emphasizes honesty, transparency in run for state auditor

MIDDLEBURY — Burlington Democrat Doug Hoffer knows that some Vermont politicians have looked at the state auditor’s job as a stepping stone to higher office.

Hoffer, 61, wants voters to know that he would be more than content to serve as auditor for the rest of his professional career.

“It’s the only job I am interested in,” Hoffer said. “I want it to be the last job I ever have.”

Career center launches meaty new program

MIDDLEBURY — The Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center next Tuesday will launch a new program aimed at beefing up the state’s meat processing industry.

The Oct. 2 launch comes as the developers of a proposed new meat processing facility slated for Middlebury’s industrial park acknowledged a delay in construction. But said they are confident they will break ground on the new facility before the end of the year.

That facility is to provide one of the training grounds for the career center students.

VUHS students talk peace and tolerance

VERGENNES — On Sept. 21, Vergennes Union High School students, staff members and some area residents for the eighth time celebrated the United Nations Day of Peace, which the U.N. designated in 2001 to be on Sept. 21 every year.

For the past eight years, VUHS students — with the approval and support of the school’s administration — have organized a school-wide assembly on the school’s front lawn to support peace around the world, in their communities, at the school and in their lives.

Porter Hospital tightens fiscal year '13 budget

MIDDLEBURY — After state regulators recently OK’d Porter Medical Center’s proposed fiscal year 2013 budget with conditions, Porter officials said the hospital will meet the state’s request to cut $465,930 from its $69 million spending plan, and it will do it in a manner that does not affect direct patient services.

Bristol eyes future of prominent gravel pit

BRISTOL — Renewed concern over the sharply angled slope of the gravel extraction sites near Mount Abraham Union High School has led to some community questions on one of Bristol’s most contentious issues — gravel pits — that could lead to discussion on how to reclaim the site.

Bristol resident David Brynn recently initiated some conversation on the subject with a letter to the editor published in the Addison Independent and with posts on a social media site.

Changes afoot for historic city burial ground

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen are asking neighbors and other parties interested in the city’s oldest cemetery to help create a new sign for the historic burial ground, for which the city assumed maintenance responsibilities this year.

An older sign now identifies it as “Vergennes First Cemetery,” and the site, at the end of Mountain View Lane, is commonly known as the First Cemetery or as the Old Cemetery.

City police set to welcome young assistants to force

VERGENNES — Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel has chartered a city branch of the national Police Explorers organization, a program that allows youths to learn about police work and even help police do some jobs, such as direct traffic, City Manager Mel Hawley told aldermen at their Sept. 18 meeting.

Hawley said Merkel has already held two organizational meetings at Vergennes Union High School, and about 15 students have said they will sign up.
