MIDDLEBURY — The Green Mountain Care Board has OK’d Porter Hospital’s request for a fiscal year 2014 budget of $69,809,477.

That spending requires a 1.4-percent increase in net revenues and a 6-percent bump in gross charges.

The budget provides further evidence of a substantial turnaround in Porter Hospital’s financial health, falls well below the state’s recommended 3-percent revenue cap, and will not force any job cuts, hospital officials said.

Posted on September 19, 2013 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday heard for the first time a resident question whether the city should support the proposed Vermont Gas Systems pipeline through Addison County.

Resident Jeff Margolis asked aldermen to rescind their support of the proposed natural gas pipeline, which came in the form of a 2011 letter backing Vermont Gas’s application to the Public Service Board seeking to use a reserve fund to pay for the pipeline extension from Chittenden County.

Bob Douglas of Douglas Orchards in Shoreham said his raspberry crop has suffered the last two years.

ADDISON COUNTY — The Rev. Andrew Nagy-Benson, pastor of the Middlebury Congregational Church, considers his profession one of the dwindling “generalist” vocations in an age when experts and wonks reign supreme.

“Our currency is not in knowing everything about one thing, but knowing something about a lot of things, and more importantly, beyond knowledge, it’s all about human connection,” he said, sitting down in his spacious Charter House office.

Sports column by Matt Dickerson: The life of a Vermont game warden

Posted on September 19, 2013 |
By Matt Dickerson

When New Haven native Wes Butler graduated in 2010 from Paul Smith’s College, he had no intention of becoming a game warden. He earned a bachelor’s degree in fish and wildlife science in order to become a wildlife biologist. He concentrated on the wildlife half rather than the fisheries half for fear that a career in fisheries might spoil his lifelong passion for angling. But the most important thing was to be on the biology side of management, and not on the law enforcement side.

MIDDLEBURY — After a failed attempt this past Tuesday in Addison Superior Court’s criminal division to win his pre-trial freedom, the Addison resident suspected of committing many burglaries in Addison County and neighboring counties will try again on Sept. 25.

At 9 a.m. on that Wednesday in the Mahady Courthouse, Raymond Ritchie, 37, will attend a “weight of the evidence” hearing that could, in theory, free him until he is tried on burglary, unlawful trespass and marijuana cultivation charges.

MIDDLEBURY — Saying someone’s business is “soaring” can fall into the category of a trite embellishment.

But it’s a term that can legitimately be used about Green Mountain Avionics (GMA), a budding new enterprise that helps aircraft soar reliably through the skies.
