Shoreland law hearing draws big crowd in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The Legislature’s ongoing effort to draft a new law regulating development on shoreland lots continues to draw concern from Addison County residents, some of whom fear new regulations will emerge that will affect their property rights.

“This is a taking of property without due process… ” said one of more than 150 people who showed up at a public hearing convened in Middlebury on Thursday by the Shoreland Protection Commission.

Thursday event planned to build community with film and history

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School on Thursday evening will host a first-of-its-kind summit that will screen two short documentary films about life in Addison County in the past and present, as well as feature historical presentations by Mount Abe students.

Faculty organizers of the Addison County Community Summit hope it will provide an opportunity for local people across generations to make new connections with each other and strengthen community ties.

MIDDLEBURY — Students entering Middlebury Union Middle and High schools for the first time are not alone. Both schools have each welcomed several new teachers to begin the 2013-14 academic year.

Brandon chef recieves top Vermont honors

BRANDON — Chef Robert Barral, executive chef/owner of Café Provence in Brandon, has been selected as Chef of the Year by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce. The award was bestowed at the Vermont Chamber Hospitality Gala, held at the Mountain Top Inn and Resort on Sept. 10 in Chittenden.

Barral is originally from the Montpelier area in France. He has been the executive chef in some of the finest kitchens in the world, including the Four Seasons in Boston, the New England Culinary Institute and Café Provence, which he opened in 2004.

Hospital budget back in the black

MIDDLEBURY — The Green Mountain Care Board has OK’d Porter Hospital’s request for a fiscal year 2014 budget of $69,809,477.

That spending requires a 1.4-percent increase in net revenues and a 6-percent bump in gross charges.

The budget provides further evidence of a substantial turnaround in Porter Hospital’s financial health, falls well below the state’s recommended 3-percent revenue cap, and will not force any job cuts, hospital officials said.

Vergennes council asked to reconsider pipeline support

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday heard for the first time a resident question whether the city should support the proposed Vermont Gas Systems pipeline through Addison County.

Resident Jeff Margolis asked aldermen to rescind their support of the proposed natural gas pipeline, which came in the form of a 2011 letter backing Vermont Gas’s application to the Public Service Board seeking to use a reserve fund to pay for the pipeline extension from Chittenden County.

Invasive Asian fruit fly returns, decimates raspberry harvest

SHOREHAM — As if an usually wet start to the summer and the threat of early frost weren’t enough, Vermont’s raspberry crop has another foe to contend with — an invasive species from Asia that has crept its way into the state.

Bob Douglas of Douglas Orchards in Shoreham said his raspberry crop has suffered the last two years.

Two bicyclists critically injured; Shoreham man faces drunk driving charges

UPDATE: MIDDLEBURY — A local man who for the past nine months had been under an active arrest warrant for driving under the influence pleaded not guilty on Monday in Addison County Superior Court (criminal division) to multiple drunk driving-related offenses after he allegedly struck and critically injured two cyclists in Sunday’s Tour de Farms event in Shoreham.

ADDISON COUNTY — The Rev. Andrew Nagy-Benson, pastor of the Middlebury Congregational Church, considers his profession one of the dwindling “generalist” vocations in an age when experts and wonks reign supreme.

“Our currency is not in knowing everything about one thing, but knowing something about a lot of things, and more importantly, beyond knowledge, it’s all about human connection,” he said, sitting down in his spacious Charter House office.
