ADDISON COUNTY — The success of one of Vermont’s most iconic crops — crisp Vermont apples and the acres of picturesque orchards that produce them — rests quite literally in the hands of workers from an island nation over 2,000 miles to the south.

NEW HAVEN/NEW YORK CITY — Like a lot of little girls in Addison County, Zoe Rabinowitz started studying dance at age five with longtime dance teacher Patty Smith.

Today the New Haven native is living the dream as a New York City-based dancer and choreographer about to set off on a tour of Jerusalem, Japan and Korea with Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre, a dance group that she co-founded 10 years ago and of which she is the associate artistic director.

Though dancing has allowed the 31-year-old to travel the world, she always remembers where she came from.

VERGENNES — Vergennes residents this weekend can have a say on the future of their hometown, especially its downtown and Otter Creek basin — and a chance to see what Main Street bike lanes and sidewalk bulb-outs might look like.

As part of a larger, grant-supported effort to develop what officials call a “Vergennes Downtown-Basin Master Plan,” residents are invited to a pair of walks on Friday evening from the city green down to Otter Creek, and then on Saturday to demonstrations of how Main Street could be friendlier for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Act 46 school consolidation law brings new budget challenges

Posted on September 17, 2015 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Area school directors will face some additional challenges this fall as they try to craft fiscal year 2017 budgets that meet new per-pupil spending guidelines prescribed by Act 46, the state’s new education reform law.

Act 46, passed during the 2015 legislative session, offers financial incentives to supervisory unions that agree to establish a single, consolidated K-12 school district that would be governed by a single board. But the law also calls for per-pupil spending caps during a two-year transition toward full implementation of Act 46.

CHAMPLAIN VALLEY — A landmark agreement between Vermont Secretary of Agriculture Chuck Ross and the Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) puts Addison County farmers on alert that all Vermont farms within the entire Lake Champlain watershed must get on board with the new, more stringent requirements to reduce phosphorus runoff into Lake Champlain — not just those within the most heavily polluted Missisquoi basin.

Shoreham kids crown new crop of Monarch butterflies

SHOREHAM — The late, great stand-up comedian George Carlin once said, “The caterpillar does all the work, but the butterfly gets all the publicity.”

That may be especially true when that butterfly is royalty, as in the “monarch,” an increasingly scarce specimen that the eight eager students in Ms. Justine Logan’s first-grade class at Shoreham Elementary School are taking pains to study, raise and release for the insect’s annual marathon flight to Mexico.

MIDDLEBURY — As dorms reopen, classes begin and Middlebury College embarks on its 216th year of expanding and sharpening young minds through the rigors of a liberal arts education, a woman takes the helm for the first time in the institution’s history.

Laurie L. Patton began her tenure as Middlebury College’s 17th president on July 1. She will be officially inaugurated on Oct. 11.

“I love the community,” said Patton, 53. “The warmth of the welcome has been truly overwhelming.”

VERGENNES — “These are your neighbors. They’ve just walked off the back road and gotten onto the stage,” says Brookfield composer Eric Nielson. He’s talking about “A Fleeting Animal: An Opera from Judevine,” his collaboration with noted Vermont poet and playwright David Budbill.

“A Fleeting Animal” opened last Friday at the Barre Opera House. This coming Saturday, Sept. 19, it makes its stop at the Vergennes Opera House as part of its tour around the state.

WIC program switching to electronic benefits card

Posted on September 14, 2015 |
By John Flowers

ADDISON COUNTY — The estimated 750 Addison County recipients of Women Infants and Children (WIC) benefits will see some major changes in the manner in which they access their benefits, as well as in the variety of foods at their disposal.

Here’s the biggest change: Beginning next spring, the state will end home delivery of WIC food packages and will instead issue an electronic benefits card to clients. Those clients will, as of May 1, 2016, be able to shop for their own WIC-eligible foods at local supermarkets, such as Shaw’s and Hannaford.
