Replacement of Route 116 bridge in Bristol to start this fall

BRISTOL — Two Bristol bridges — the one-lane bridge on Route 116 south of the village and the bridge on South Street just down the hill from downtown — are on track to get some much-needed construction.

Mosquito expert – Is the worst yet to come?

ADDISON COUNTY — An unusually wet, hot and humid summer has been miserable for humans but a veritable utopia for mosquitoes, which have been multiplying in vast numbers in many areas of Addison County.

“This is going to be one of the worst (mosquito) years we’ve had in a while,” state Entomologist Alan Graham said on Thursday.

“They have been very abundant, because of the rain.”

Bristol native turns hobby farm into diversified business

BRISTOL — Anne Myrick’s sprawling property off of Route 17 west of Bristol village is covered with intricate gardens, wide fields and a pond.

In recent years, her son Tony Myrick has added to the view. Myrick, 39, has been farming on a few acres near his childhood home and selling what he produces at the Bristol Farmers’ Market for four years. Yore Fare Farm, as he titled the enterprise, is turning a profit this year for the first time.

Middlebury Farmers Market is moving onto drier ground

MIDDLEBURY — While everyone can appreciate the improvements being made near Otter Creek Falls in downtown Middlebury this summer, the construction site and the adjacent Marble Works lawn has had its share of mud and mess like any other construction site during this wildly wet summer.

Still, every Saturday and Wednesday the Middlebury Farmers Market has been open for business, with both vendors and customers alike putting aside any aversions they may have to mud for the sake of good food and company.

Salisbury belltower undergoing repairs

SALISBURY — For folks who live in the town of Salisbury, depending on where they live, there are certain sounds which are part of the auditory landscape — the rush of water, whine of mosquitoes, peepers, birdsong, the coyote chorus, power tools, to name a few. Two others come to mind: the train in the wee hours in West Salisbury and the tolling of the bell from the church in the village.

Middlebury seeks help designing new town office

MIDDLEBURY — The Middle­bury selectboard on Aug. 13 is scheduled to pick a design-build company to help draw up plans for a new municipal building and gym, a project that could be put to the voters as soon as this November.

Board members on Tuesday agreed to establish the five-person committee to evaluate four design-build teams that are in the running for the contract. The teams are DEW Construction Corp. and Freeman French Freeman, Inc.; Engleberth Construction and Wiemann Lamphere Architects; ReArch Co. and Vermont Integrated Architecture; and Bread Loaf Corp.

Dunmore, Fern Lake group looks to stay ahead of pesky milfoil

LEICESTER — Faced with the relentless encroachment of milfoil and unpredictable financial assistance from the state to battle that problem, the Lake Dunmore/Fern Lake Association (LDFLA) is seeking to raise at least $1.725 million to permanently endow the ongoing effort to clear nuisance aquatic weeds from the two bodies of water.

“This would provide the nucleus of a successful program today, and into the future,” LDFLA Treasurer Jay Michael said on Monday of that new campaign, called “Lakes Alive — Now and Forever.”

Starksboro gardener’s artistic talent blooms

STARKSBORO — Twelve years ago the property on Robert Young Road purchased by Price and Marijke Niles for their retirement was full of grass, brambles and brush.

“It was so bad, the real estate agent told us not to buy it,” Marijke Niles, 67, recalled. “But we fell in love with the big rock, the view and the pond, and I wanted a big open space where I could garden.”
