STARKSBORO — Those who have unhappily watched the trends of young people leaving the state and farms closing up shop have reason to celebrate the launch of Footprint Farm in Starksboro this year.

Three young farmers — St. George native Jake Mendell, 25, and California natives Taylor Hutchison, 25, and Nathan Hammer, 32 — started work in April on their diversified, 9-acre farm at Starksboro’s Common Ground Center.

And already the trio says they have found a warm welcome for their mix of vegetables, flowers and animals.

MIDDLEBURY — After several months of relative silence, International Paper Co. officials last week gave one of their most extensive public pronouncements to date on why the company is banking on a proposed, controversial Addison County natural gas pipeline to help drive down costs for what they termed as the most costly paper mill in the world to operate in terms of energy consumption.

ADDISON COUNTY — Fran Boglioli was enveloped by several emotions when she was diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago. Along with the understandable fear and trepidation, she felt a sense of isolation.

“Despite all of the people around me who cared and wanted to help, I felt very alone,” Boglioli recalled. “I think that’s a pretty common problem when you’ve been diagnosed with something like (cancer).”

ADDISON COUNTY — According to National Weather Service meteorologist Kimberly McMahon, the data the agency collects at the Burlington International Airport show things started getting unusual in the middle of May.

In fact, temperatures for the first six months of year remain “right around normal,” McMahon said.

So, too, did precipitation amounts for the first four-and-a-half months of 2013. In fact, if anything, there was a little less snow and rain overall.

“Toward the middle of May, we were below normal,” McMahon said.

MIDDLEBURY — It was around 80 degrees, humid and drizzly in Middlebury on Monday, but it was just like Christmas at 297 Creek Road where the 31 full- and part-time workers at Addison County Transit Resources were opening a gift for them and the rest of the county: ACTR’s new, 12,500-square-foot headquarters.

“Over the last month, the experience has been somewhat surreal for most people here,” ACTR Director James Moulton said on Monday as he continued to unpack supplies in his new office.
