Experts to evaluate Mt. Abe's ventilation system

Posted on July 26, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

BRISTOL — A comprehensive assessment of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems at Mount Abraham Union High School could begin producing hard data as early as this fall.

Complaints about poor air quality at the school have provoked a great deal of discussion over the past few years, but proposals for improvement have three times gone down in flames, along with the multi-million-dollar renovation bonds into which they were embedded.

Women take charge in Bristol

BristolBusiness2178.jpg

BRISTOL — Women own or run a heck of a lot of Bristol businesses.

Though there is no definitive list of town business, Ian Albinson, executive director of the Bristol CORE business group, compiled a list of 22 women-owned or women-run businesses virtually off the top of his head.

No one can say just why this is the case and what it means for the town’s future, but people paying attention say that the number of women in the town’s business scene and the vigor they bring to the entrepreneurial ecosystem is undeniable.

MIDDLEBURY — Turn back the clock a half century.

Downtown Middlebury was a bustling retail hub. Just about every local family went to the Lazarus Department Store at 22-26 Main St. (pictured below) to outfit themselves and their kids with sturdy clothing and shoes.

Omnipresent store owner Stanton Lazarus brought a combination of business acumen and compassion to his running of the business that bore his family name. His philanthropy became legendary, though he tried to keep it low-key.

Swim areas being tested for E. coli bacteria

MIDDLEBURY — As residents seek respite from scorching summer temperatures at local swimming holes, pesky rumors about water cleanliness — or lack thereof — can inject unease into otherwise bliss-filled afternoons. Talk of waterborne E. coli is particularly quick to cause alarm.

Thanks to the Addison County River Watch Collaborative, though, swimmers wary of foul waters can find monthly updates on E. coli levels in local waters that can help determine which swimming holes are safest.

Hawley to extend stay as City Manager

Posted on July 23, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Hawley, Mel.jpg

VERGENNES — Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley has agreed to remain at his job — but only on a part-time basis until Aug. 31 — to allow the city council a little more time to find his permanent replacement.

Deputy Mayor and search committee chairman Jeff Fritz said good candidates have emerged from a search coordinated by the Vermont League of Cities and Towns, but none would be able to take over in time, even on an interim basis, before Hawley planned to step down after this Tuesday’s council meeting.

BRISTOL — Just because the Mount Abraham Unified School District’s summer Expanded Learning Program (ELP) will not end with a battery of standardized testing doesn’t mean there’s not a whole lot of learning happening there.

Playwright project promotes female leads on stage

Pop up Shoot 014.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater has built a great reputation for staging an eclectic mix of plays and musicals using an array of talented actors to bring the subject matter to life.

One thread has run through many of the productions: The presence of men in the most dominant roles.

It’s not that THT brass have intentionally selected plays that celebrate male characters and/or themes; it’s just that a majority of the classics — from “Macbeth” to “Sweeney Todd” — have masculine protagonists.

MIDDLEBURY — For those who call Addison County home, many of the systems that bring the food we eat to our plates unfold more or less in our backyards.

From milk produced at Monument Farms and sold at Shaw’s and Hannaford supermarkets to produce grown by students at the Middlebury College Knoll of Route 125, production of local food dictates the day-to-day routines of many of those around us.

Check your Vt. property tax bill; thousands are probably inaccurate

Posted on July 19, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON COUNTY — Many property tax bills already sent out by Vermont town clerks and treasurers lack information about education property tax breaks for eligible homeowners, according to state and local officials. The Vermont Department of Taxes blamed “a processing backlog” at the department for the snafu.

“It’s a mess,” said Vergennes City Clerk and Treasurer Joan Devine on Tuesday, adding that by about 2 p.m. that day alone she and Assistant Clerk/Treasurer Melissa Wright had already handled eight calls on the issue.
