VERGENNES — The Addison Northwest School District Board will probably propose to voters a $7.6 million bond on Town Meeting Day that would fund a long list of energy efficiency, fire safety and security upgrades at all four district schools.

State funding news 'shrinks' ACSD school budget problem to $1.3M

Posted on December 21, 2017 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Public school officials often lament the unpredictability of Vermont’s education funding system. It is not unusual for state aid information to be released in dribs and drabs, sometimes right up to the point at which school districts must finalize their budgets for Town Meeting Day votes.

This year has been no different. But a batch of state aid information received on Dec. 17 buoyed the spirits of Addison Central School District directors, who learned the Vermont Agency of Education has agreed to increase the ACSD student count by 53.

’Tis the season for holiday cheer — a time when family and friends come together to celebrate. Sure, there are the usual holiday parties with finger food, egg nog, cozy fireplaces and ugly sweaters, but don’t forget the most important part… the candy.

What would the holidays be without chocolates, gummies, candy canes, toffees, brittles, caramels, cookies and all the other glorious sweets?

Boring, that’s what.

PITTSFORD — Immigration advocates are protesting the Vermont Criminal Justice Council’s updated language in a state law designed to encourage fair policing.

But the chairman of the VCJC says those same advocates were involved in the updating process and are smearing the council. The VCJC has said the language in the Fair and Impartial Policing Policy must be changed in order to comply with tighter federal immigration rules or risk losing grant funding.

The Outside Story: A walk in the woods — following plants that follow stream beds

Posted on December 18, 2017 |
By Susan Shea

The Outside Story Liverwort.jpg

I followed a stream downhill through the woods as it coursed through a small ravine. At the base of the hill, just before the brook entered a wetland, a patch of unusual-looking plants was growing amongst moss on a decaying tree root that spanned the stream. They were round and flat with lobed edges, and only the size of a dime. A couple of other patches grew nearby. Here the plants had branched out from their round bases, extending flat green ribbons across the damp soil.
