MIDDLEBURY — This past Friday, Feb. 8, Middlebury College distributed applications to 80 staff members for formal separation packages that include incentives for them to leave their positions.

The voluntary buyouts are the result of a workforce planning process that the college initiated in June 2018, with the goal of reducing the college’s roughly $10.6 million annual operating deficit. In a Feb. 8 statement, college officials said they expect about 50 full- and part-time staff members at its Middlebury campus to take advantage of the program.

CORNWALL — David Black and Anja Wrede have two passions: facilitating better mobility for people with physical disabilities and raising Dutch Warmblood horses. It was these two sometimes-competing passions that brought them in 2015 to Cornwall.

On Avenir Farm, their 47-acre property off Route 125, the couple now operates their custom adaptive bike-building business, RAD-Innovations, and also raises eight Dutch Warmblood horses.

BRANDON — On Sept. 28, the Chittenden Brook Campground in Brandon saw something unusual: a large, construction-size crane wielding one of two halves of a pre-fabricated building in the middle of the Green Mountain National Forest.

MIDDLEBURY — In 2017, Change the Story Vermont, a publicly funded initiative to improve women’s economic status in Vermont, reported that just 8 percent of the state’s highest-grossing companies were led by women. This fall, the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies (VCET) is launching a new program it hopes will help change that statistic.
