Panther harriers make good showing at NCAA meet

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Middlebury College women’s and men’s cross-country teams on Saturday finished 14th and 24th, respectively, among 32 teams in the NCAA Division III championship meets hosted by Spalding University in Louisville, Ky.

Panther sophomore Abigail Nadler earned All-American honors with her 15th-place finish. The Johns Hopkins women and the North Central (Ill.) men each took home team national crowns.

Panther men’s hockey drops pair in Maine

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Middlebury College men’s hockey team opened the 2016-2017 season with a pair of tight losses to NESCAC rivals Colby and Bowdoin in Maine.

The Panthers will try to bounce back this weekend in Plattsburgh, which is hosting this year’s Great Northern Shootout. The Panthers will play Norwich at 4 p.m. on Friday, and Plattsburgh will face Concordia at 7 p.m. The Shootout consolation and final will be played on Saturday at 4 and 7 p.m., respectively.

Panther football nets third in the league

MIDDLEBURY — Visiting Tufts held off a comeback by the Middlebury College football team on Saturday, prevailing by 48-35 in the season’s final game for both teams.

The Jumbos (7-1) clinched sole possession of second place in NESCAC behind 8-0 Trinity, while the 6-2 Panthers finished tied for third with Wesleyan. With its 6-2 season, Middlebury is now 31-9 over the past five years.

At the Panthers’ Alumni Stadium on Saturday Middlebury nearly rallied from a 41-7 deficit as the two teams combined for almost 1,000 yards of total offense.

Messiah tips Middlebury College field hockey team

MECHANICSBURGH, Penn. — The Middlebury College field hockey team easily won its first game in the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday, but fell to top-ranked host Messiah in a Regional final, 4-2, on Sunday.

The defending national champion Panthers, who graduated most of their starting lineup, finished the season at 15-5, while Messiah advanced to the final four with a 20-1 record.

Messiah scored twice in Sunday’s final 10 minutes to oust the Panthers from the tournament.

Panther runners get NCAA bids

WESTFIELD, Mass. — The Middlebury College men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished fourth on Saturday at an NCAA Division III Regional hosted by Westfield State University, performances good enough for each to earn invitations to the NCAA championship races.

The Panther runners will head to Spaulding University in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday for NCAA competition. The women’s race will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the men’s race at noon.

Women invited to try ice hockey

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Mystix women’s hockey team is sponsoring an “Adult Try Hockey for Free” skate at the Memorial Sports Center on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.  This is a chance for women and men who have never tried hockey, or have little to no skating experience, to get on the ice. The minimum equipment needed is a hockey helmet, gloves, shin pads and stick. Skate rentals will also be free. There will be some basic instruction included in the ice time.

Ithaca edges Panther volleyball in NCAA tournament

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Middlebury College volleyball nearly rallied from a two-set deficit on Friday in an NCAA Division III Regional at SUNY Brockport, but Ithaca (27-5) edged the Panthers in five sets (27-25, 26-24, 21-25, 18-25, 16-14).

The Panthers, who earned their NCAA berth by winning the NESCAC playoff title the weekend before, conclude their season with an 18-9 record.
