Locals excel in Vermont Sun Triathlon

SALISBURY — Eric Florio of East Williston, N.Y., broke the one-hour barrier to win Sunday’s Vermont Sun Sprint Triathlon at Branbury State Park, while Monkton’s Chris Coffey and Brandon’s Corey Robinson finished second and third, respectively, in the men’s competition.

Florio became just the ninth out of about 17,000 entrants since 1986 to break an hour when he finished in 59:45, just 41 seconds off the course record set in 2006.

Former Panther athlete returns as hockey coach

MIDDLEBURY — Ripton native and former Panther two-sport standout Brian Phinney has been hired to assist the Middlebury College men’s ice hockey program.

Phinney, a 2005 graduate who played on Panther hockey and lacrosse teams that combined for three NCAA Division III championships, returns to Middlebury from the Salisbury School in Connecticut.

Twosomes prevail at Ralph Myrhe women's tournament

MIDDLEBURY — The team of Beth Fappiano and Trish Wade was the Low Gross winner last week at Ralph Myhre 35th annual Women’s Invitational, while the duo of Julie Vest and Nicole LaBerge claimed the Low Net crown.

Finishing second behind Fappiano and Wade in the Low Gross race were Julie Dale and Laurie Carver, followed by Cindy Paquet and Sheila Darragh in third and Carol Weston and Jean Goodwin in fourth.

Bristol Police Log: Man charged with forgery, say he used a stolen credit card in Bristol

BRISTOL — On July 14, Bristol police arrested Shawn Mathieu, 32, of Colchester following a criminal investigation. Police charged Mathieu with forgery and with using “false pretenses or tokens” for signing a stolen credit card and using it at two locations in Bristol.

On July 10, Bristol police were contacted by a Chittenden County resident who reported their wallet had been stolen on July 4. The victim reported being notified by the issuing bank that one of the cards from the wallet had just been used at two locations in Bristol.

Simmons back in Bristol to win horseshoe tourney

BRISTOL — The Sodbusters Horseshoe Pitching Club hosted 56 pitchers in the Sodbusters Open Tournament at the club’s home courts in Bristol this past Sunday, July 16.

Former national champion Brian Simmons was winner in Class A with a perfect 7-0 record. Simmonds, a one-time Sodbusters member who was listed in the results as a Tennessee resident now, hit ringers on 77.48 percent of his tosses.

Middlebury Police Log: Middlebury police investigate man wrapped in a tarp on TAM trail

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated a July 15 report of a body wrapped in a tarp on a portion of the Trail Around Middlebury off Route 7 South.

Officers responding to the scene found a live, drunken man sleeping in the tarp.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Helped Vermont State Police find two runaway juveniles in the John Graham Court area on July 10.

•  Were informed of the theft of a Nexus electronic tablet from a Main Street church on July 10.

Let the porch swing with LC Jazz at Lincoln Peak Vinyard

LC Jazz, a 17-piece “big band,” is back for their fourth show-stopping evening at Lincoln Peak Vineyard on Friday, July 21, 6-8 p.m. The ensemble has been playing jazz standards from the big band era — Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Sammy Nestico, and other swing jazz greats — for 20 years. The band is a Vergennes-based non-profit organization and sponsors music scholarships at our three area high schools: MUHS, MAUHS and VUHS. Don’t forget your dancing shoes!

Vergennes Police Log: City police look into alleged child abuse

VERGENNES — Vergennes police capped a busy week on Sunday by issuing citations for driving under the influence of alcohol and for theft. They also that day began two investigations, one involving a man who allegedly physically abused children and another involving a sex offender.

Goshen woman fined after dam tampering

MONTPELIER — The Agency of Natural Resources has fined Suzanne Reider of Goshen $9,750 for making alterations to Stewart Pond Dam before obtaining necessary authorization from the state.

Dams, even small dams for backyard ponds, are significant structures that can have major public safety and environmental implications, ANR officials said in a press release last week. As a result, dams are regulated by a variety of federal, state and local laws.
