After Minnie Griswold passed away in 1952, her sons locked up their mother’s house in Pawlet and left all her belongings in place, unaltered. Thirty years later, Pawlet documentarians Susanne and Neil Rappaport would enter the home at the invitation of one of the brothers, Charlie, and go on to produce a collection of hand-colored photographs of Minnie’s home.

‘Quilters, the Musical’ makes a stop in Middlebury

A tender, moving play about a pioneer woman and her daughters, “Quilters, the Musical” skillfully blends a series of interrelated scenes into a memorable musical. Each scene is introduced by a quilt square or “block” symbolic of life’s passages. During each “block,” the actresses transforms into many different characters whose stories depict the lot of women on the prairie. Combining music, dance and drama, “Quilters” captures both the harsh challenges and the abiding rewards of frontier life with vivid dramatic intensity.

ACORN is offering a series of business workshops

MIDDLEBURY —  Following ACORN’s successful Producer Buyer forum in November, the organization will offer a series of winter workshops covering a range of business development. These meet-ups include peer to peer sharing on a range of topics.

The first workshop will be offered on Thursday, Jan. 25 from 9:30-noon at the UVM Extension office in Middlebury. Tips and merchandising strategies to improving sales are shared by Annie Harlow, retail services consultant to NOFA and Vermont Farm to Plate.

Grants available to boost local food sales

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets (VAAFM) has announced the availability of up to $60,000 in funding for Local Food Market Development (LFMD) Grants to assist eligible Vermont farmers, businesses, and value-chain facilitators to reach new markets. VAAFM works to support market opportunities with an institutional or other wholesale focus in Vermont.

Farmer coalition meeting set for Jan. 25 in Vergennes

ADDISON COUNTY — The Champlain Valley Farmer Coalition will hold its 2018 annual meeting next Thursday, Jan. 25, at the American Legion hall in Vergennes.

Speakers lined up for the evening include Vermont Agriculture Secretary Anson Tebbetts, Natural Resources Secretary Julie Moore and Paul Costello of the Vermont Council of Rural Development/Vermont Climate Action Committee.

FEMA authorizes $3.7M for Vt. rain and wind damage in October

MONTPELIER — Gov. Phil Scott earlier this month announced that President Donald Trump has signed a major disaster declaration for Addison, Chittenden, Essex, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille, Orange, Orleans, Washington, and Windham counties. Those counties suffered substantial damage during wind and rain storms this past Oct. 29 and 30.

MUHS boys bounce back to beat U-32 ice hockey, 3-0

BARRE — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team defeated host U-32 on Saturday night, 3-0, snapping a four-game losing streak and avenging a disappointing 4-3 home loss to the Raiders on the previous Tuesday.

The Tigers improved to 6-4-1 and strengthened their hold on sixth place in Division I. U-32 dropped to 3-5.
