Trio wins at Ralph Myhre; ladies' tournament on tap

MIDDLEBURY — The trio of Bernie Andrews, Russ Leng and Rick Wheeler prevailed in Thursday afternoon men’s golf action at Ralph Myhre Golf Course on June 30.

Finishing second was the threesome of Bert Phinney, Jim Hadeka and Deem Schoenfeld, with the trio of Ron Kowalski, Don Dayton and Mike Adams taking third.

Kowalski was the day’s low gross winner, while Schoenfeld posted the best low net score.

Middlebury police log: Police investigate report of human bone being found

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a report of a possible human bone found along a stretch of the Middlebury River off Three Mile Bridge Road on June 27. Police said the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner inspected the bone and determined it was not of human origin.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

• Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS with a possible overdose patient in the North Pleasant Street area on July 4.

• Returned a 10-year-old daughter to her family after she had run away to Otter View Park on July 3.

Bristol police log: Police assist with a report of bank fraud

BRISTOL — Among other incidents in the month of May, Bristol police assisted a district resident who reported bank fraud. According to a Bristol resident, several thousand dollars had been transferred from a bank account without permission. People’s United Bank instigated an on-going criminal investigation.

Vermont state police log: Police cite woman for reckless driving, mischief

ADDISON COUNTY — On July 5, Vermont State Police cited a Starksboro woman for reckless endangerment and unlawful mischief following a dispute that day off Atkins Road in Lincoln, during which she allegedly discharged a firearm into a vehicle.

Katelyn Russell, 27, is scheduled to answer to the charges on Aug. 1 in Addison County Superior Court, according to police.

Vergennes police log for July 7

VERGENNES — According to two city teenage girls, a naked man confronted them while they were walking on School Street at about 1 a.m. on July 1.

The two girls told Vergennes police the man asked them if they liked what they saw and then moved his hips suggestively.

The teens found an on-duty Vergennes officer and reported the incident, but the officer could not find the man.

LCI executive director wins environmental award

A man once called Lake Champlain’s loudest advocate is being honored for his tireless devotion to Vermont’s most important body of water.

James Ehlers, executive director of Lake Champlain International, was presented with the GMP-Zetterstrom Environmental Award for his unwavering efforts to protect and improve Lake Champlain. The award, named for famed osprey advocate Meeri Zetterstrom, comes with $2,500 to support LCI’s work.

Porter to upgrade patient monitoring system

MIDDLEBURY — The Porter Medical Center Auxiliary Board of Directors has approved a contribution of $131,000 to Porter Hospital in support of a state-of-the-art patient monitoring system upgrade project. The total cost of the project is $350,000, with the auxiliary donation providing the final funding portion of what Porter’s Interim CEO Dr. Fred Kniffin has called “one of my highest-priority projects and a significant step forward for our community hospital.”

CVAA to offer meal for seniors on July 1

MIDDLEBURY — CVAA will host its First Friday Meal at the Middlebury VFW on July 1. Seniors are asked to arrive at 11 a.m. for a noon meal featuring stuffed chicken, mashed cauliflower, peas and carrots, mesclun mixed salad with a choice of dressing, dinner roll and birthday cake for dessert.

Certified organic regular and decaffeinated coffee will be available thanks to the donation of Vermont Coffee Company.

The suggested donation for the meal is $4, and advanced reservations are required. Call CVAA at 1-800-642-5110, ext. 1070, to reserve a spot.

The foundation of a beautiful garden

Designing a lovely garden is an eminently visual process, akin to painting a picture with plants. We may even conjure up images of  'plein-air' artists like Claude Monet, working outdoors in diffuse natural light, carefully mixing their paints as they recreated their own mesmerizing gardens on canvas.
