THE MIDDLEBURY MYSTIX women’s hockey team will, with the Middlebury Otters, host the annual “Face Off Against Breast Cancer” tournament Jan. 19 and 20 in Middlebury at the Memorial Sports Center. Last year, the event raised over $70,000 for the statewide Cancer Patient Support Program, and the Otters and Mystix are hoping to break that record in 2013. CD brings Monkton's past to life in song

MONKTON — Residents of Monkton can now own a piece of local history created last year by Monkton Central School students and Pete Sutherland, the well-known and much-loved Vermont musician and songwriter.

The “Songs from Monkton Yore” CD, available at the Willowell Foundation website, features five songs that bring aspects of Monkton’s past to life, including the kaolin mining industry and the agricultural lifestyle of the town’s first residents.

GOP to select its nominee to replace the late Rep. Greg Clark

VERGENNES — Addison County Republicans will meet this week to determine who they will nominate to replace Rep. Greg Clark, the Vergennes-area House member who was killed in a traffic incident on Nov. 30.

The Addison, Ferrisburgh and Vergennes Town Republican committees will hold a special meeting on Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Otter Creek Room of Bixby Library in Vergennes. They will select up to three persons to recommend to the governor to fill the vacancy in the office of state representative for the Addison-3 district.

Whistle Pig, neighbor at odds over Act 250 permit and right to expand operation

SHOREHAM — A disagreement between Whistle Pig Rye LLC and Solar Haven Farm LLC, neighboring property owners on Bates Road in Shoreham, may be going to court.

A pre-hearing conference is scheduled with lawyers from both parties on Tuesday, Jan. 15, with site visits to both farms.

Editor’s note: Gov. Peter Shumlin took the oath of office to start his second term as governor on Thursday. The following is Gov. Shumlin’s State of the State Address, which he delivered in the Vermont Statehouse after his swearing in ceremony.

Lt. Gov. Phil Scott addresses the state

Editor’s note: Lt. Gov. Phil Scott was sworn in this morning for his second two-year term as Vermont’s lieutenant governor. After taking the oath of office from Sen. Dick Mazza, D-Chittenden/Grand Isle, Lt. Gov. Scott offered the following remarks.

Good morning. First, I’d like to thank Vermonters for the opportunity to serve the state for another two years. It truly is an honor for me to serve as Vermont’s Lt. Governor. To think a Barre-born stock car racer like myself would ever have an opportunity such as this is truly incredible.
