County students make dean's list at Rochester Institute of Technology

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Kenneth Alexopoulos of Vergennes, who is studying computer engineering, Greta Krahn of Vergennes, who is studying graphic design, Jacob Lawson of Middlebury, who is studying mechanical engineering, and Jackson Radler of North Ferrisburgh, who is studying biomedical sciences, were named to the dean’s list for the fall 2016 semester at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Vermont State Police Log: State police respond to a two-vehicle crash

ADDISON COUNTY — On March 11 at approximately 10:39 p.m. Vermont State Police were notified of a two-vehicle crash on Route 7 near Route 53 in Salisbury.

Police identified the drivers involved as Gail M. Grant, 60, of East Middlebury and Steven E. Amaru, 58, of Epping, N.H.

Both vehicles were traveling northbound on Route 7, according to police, when Amaru pulled over to the shoulder to allow Grant to pass. However, Grant passed Amaru’s vehicle on the right side and while doing so struck the Ford Focus causing damage.

Vergennes Police Log: City police help crack a major Vt. burglary case

VERGENNES — Vergennes police handled mostly routine incidents between March 6 and 12, a week in which they also worked with Vermont State Police to crack a major burglary case (see story in A section).

In those seven days, city police:

•  On March 6 received a tip about illegal drug activity in the area.

•  On March 6 were told of trash being dumped illegally at a Ferrisburgh convenience store, identified the probable culprit through a piece of mail in the trash, and sent a letter about the issue to the suspect.

Middlebury Police Log: Shoreham man cited for DUI after report of erratic driving

 MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Rodrigo Cardoso De Lima, 37, of Shoreham for driving under the influence, following a report of a man driving in an erratic manner on South Main Street on March 9.

Police said they measured De Lima’s blood-alcohol content at 0.189 percent; the legal limit for driving is 0.08.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Assisted Vermont State Police with a reported vehicle roll-over near the intersection of Route 125 and Ridge Road in Cornwall on March 6.

Food for brakes

STEVEN AND LISA Dupoise of County Tire recently delivered 881 pounds of non-perishable food to the food shelf at HOPE (Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects). The food was collected during County Tire’s annual “Food for Brakes” event. HOPE Executive Director Jeanne Montross said her organization is very grateful for the food, especially since use of their food shelf rose by 21 percent during the second half of 2016. The Dupoises said they were appreciative to their customers, who filled the boxes with food.

River Watch to hold water-sampling training on March 18

MIDDLEBURY — In the midst of March’s tug-o-war between winter and spring, the citizen-science group that monitors local rivers is gearing up for the 2017 season. Addison County River Watch Collaborative, an organization of about thirty volunteers and scientists, has been busy this winter reviewing last summer’s sampling data, meeting with local conservation commissions and other groups to discuss possible improvements in water quality, and strategizing about the best places to focus their water-sampling efforts this spring and summer.

City man charged with burglary

VERGENNES — Vermont State Police with help from the Vergennes Police Department on Thursday arrested a Vergennes resident and charged him in connection with a Feb. 27 Ferrisburgh burglary and possession of what a VSP press release called a “host of stolen property from car smash-and-grabs at local trailheads” and “property from other area burglaries.”

On March 9 troopers arrested Jake F. Desjadon, 30, and cited him into court for burglary, grand larceny, selling stolen property, resisting arrest and unlawful mischief.
