VPA picks Mount Abe trio for Hall of Fame

MONTPELIER — Three longtime fixtures at Mount Abraham Union High School have been chosen to be among the dozen newest inductees into the Vermont Principals’ Association Hall of Fame.

Coaches Connie LaRose, Jeff Stetson and Mary Stetson are among the 12 student-athletes, coaches, officials, an administrator and a contributor who have been selected for the VPA Hall of Fame’s class of 2018.

Panther women's hockey blanks Polar Bears twice

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team picked up a pair of shutout wins over visiting NESCAC rival Bowdoin this past weekend to improve to 10-3-1, 6-1-1 in league play. Their Friday win was the 550th of Coach Bill Mandigo’s career. With an overall record now of 551-145-40, Mandigo’s teams have won more games than those of any other NCAA women’s hockey coach.

Panther track and field athletes win at home

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College men’s and women’s indoor track and field athletes won several events at their own Winterfell Meet on Saturday.

Overall, the Panther men placed third among the seven competing schools with 136 points, trailing only NCAA Division I programs Albany (181) and Vermont (137). The Middlebury women recorded 86 points, placing fourth behind Albany (193), McGill (115) and Vermont (102). The Middlebury teams return to action this weekend, when they host the Middlebury Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Middlebury women split hoop games

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s basketball split two recent games, picking up a key NESCAC result on the road on Saturday before losing a non-league game on Monday. The Panthers stand at 13-5, 3-2 in league play. That NESCAC mark is good for sole possession of fourth place. Middlebury will next host league rival Trinity at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Men's hoop moves up in standings

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team won twice this past weekend, including a key NESCAC victory that allowed the Panthers (14-3 overall) to take over first place in the league at 4-1.

The Panthers are off until Sunday, when they visit Trinity (13-4, 2-2). Middlebury moved up to No. 10 in this week’s NCAA Division III poll.

Men's hockey splits Maine tilts

BRUNSWICK, Maine — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team split a pair of NESCAC games in Maine this past weekend and stands at 4-11, 2-7 in league play, heading into a pair of NESCAC home games this weekend. Connecticut visits on Friday at 7 p.m., and Tufts is set to show up on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Vermont State Police Log: Injured snowmobile driver cited for DUI

ADDISON COUNTY — At just after 11:30 p.m. this past Friday, Jan. 19, Vermont State Police responded to a reported snowmobile accident on a VAST trail off Route 7 in Leicester. The driver of the snowmobile, identified as 26-year-old Jason Rowe of Brandon, was transported to Porter Hospital in Middlebury to receive treatment for a shoulder injury and minor cuts.

Middlebury Police Log: Woman revived after drug overdose

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Police helped revive a woman who had overdosed on drugs in the lobby of a Court Street building on Jan. 17.

Police said Middlebury Regional EMS officials found the woman to be unresponsive. Fortunately, an officer was equipped with Narcan, medication that stimulates bodily functions in a person who has stopped breathing due to drug overdose. Police administered it to the woman, who regained consciousness, according to authorities.

Ambulance staff then took the woman to Porter Hospital, police said.

Vergennes Police Log: Typical calls occupy city police

VERGENNES — Vergennes police handled a variety of incidents and violations between Jan. 15 and 21, including continuing violations of the city’s winter overnight parking ban, minor car accidents, a student drug case, an untimely death, and two animal control issues, all while working on a couple more serious investigations on which they were not yet ready to comment.

Bristol Police Log: Police still seeking attempted robbery suspect

BRISTOL — Bristol police are still seeking the public’s help in finding out who attempted to rob the National Bank of Middlebury branch office on Main Street on Jan. 13.

As reported in the Jan. 18 Addison Independent, at 11:10 that Saturday morning a woman approximately 5-foot-5 wearing a heavy red checked coat gave the teller a note demanding money but fled on foot before getting anything. The suspect was seen leaving the area in what was described as an older green Subaru Impreza, eastbound on East Street toward Starksboro.
