Businesses in Bristol on the rebound

BRISTOL — Some Bristol businesses struggled through the heavy winter as a couple empty storefronts on Main Street reflect.

Five Main Street businesses closed this year and two operations moved — Bristol Physical Therapy set up shop on North Street and the Pathways program of the Mount Abraham Union High School, which had a Main Street storefront, moved back into the school  — leaving a total of seven vacancies on Bristol’s main drag.

New law could energize solar power

VERMONT — Renewable energy advocates hope that a new law signed last week by Gov. Peter Shumlin will lead to a surge of solar power in the state’s energy grid. The Vermont Energy Act of 2011, which will take effect on July 1, mandates that all utility companies provide residential customers who use solar power with a 20-cent credit for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of energy they generate.

Bristol studies pedestrian safety

BRISTOL — Bristol residents have consistently expressed that they are concerned about the safety of children, joggers and bicyclists that frequent the stretch of Route 17/116 between downtown Bristol and Lincoln Road. 

A “pedestrian feasibility study” will be conducted throughout the summer to provide the town with several options for constructing a pedestrian path along this precarious stretch of road.

ANeSU taxes rising to make up for deficits

BRISTOL — Tax rates in some Addison Northeast Supervisory Union towns likely will increase in the coming year by a penny more than they otherwise would have as school directors, on the advice of supervisory union officials, try to rein in operating deficits for all six district schools.

ANeSU interim business manager Susan Jefferies shifted into high gear early this month to quickly draw up fiscal action plans for each of the schools after audits released at that time showed the official cumulative deficits that the schools had run.

Dan's Place is out and ND's is in

BRISTOL — A tavern called ND’s, named after proprietors Nina Badger and David Bannister, is set to replace the bar formerly known as Dan’s Place on the east end of Main Street in Bristol by mid June.

After Dan Palmer closed his bar in February, he was unable to reopen as planned in April.

Fortunately for the loyal following of Dan’s Place frequenters, Badger (who helped Palmer initially decorate and set up his spot) and Bannister (one of Palmer’s investors) are promising a bar very reminiscent of its former self.

ANeSU gets new business head

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast Supervisory Union recently hired seasoned school finance veteran Edward Gomeau to take over as its business manager. In July, Gomeau will take over an operation that has been plagued with deficits over the past two years.

Presently in his fourth year as director of finance and operations for New Haven Public Schools in Connecticut, the new business manager touts a hefty history in the field of fiscal management.

Bristol Oks $337K police budget after long debate

BRISTOL — As divided as it was, Monday’s annual meeting of the Bristol Police District in Holley Hall was a testament to the effectiveness of democracy in a small-town setting. The 2010-2011 fiscal year police spending plan of $337,322 was passed by a thin margin of 19-16 in a paper ballot vote.

Middlebury filmmaker Tim Joy and his team called Projection Films turned a full-sized automobile into a radio control car to perform a stunt for their upcoming horror movie Soul Keeper. After weeks of planning, the car crash went off without a hitch on Lincoln’s Isham Road. Click below to view the action.
