State to replace River Road bridge

NEW HAVEN — New Haven residents will have a chance to weigh in on the upcoming Nash Bridge replacement project, which will overhaul the present bridge on River Road that crosses the New Haven River near Halpin Road.

Bristol planners analyze results of poll on sand and gravel extraction

BRISTOL — At Tuesday’s Bristol Planning Commission meeting, planners responsible for analyzing data from a March 1 public poll on gravel excavation in town submitted reasons for why residents were for or against gravel extraction in Bristol.

The planners examined public comments from the poll, which was used to gauge community sentiments surrounding gravel extraction in the downtown and conservation districts.

Lincoln group reaches out to Ghana

LINCOLN — The Addison County-Ghana relationship will thicken this year as Lincoln’s Ruth Polishuk lifts ECHO off the ground. ECHO — which stands for Education, Culture and Health Opportunities — is a nonprofit nongovernmental organization (NGO) based out of Lincoln and Ghana’s southeast Volta Region.

ACRPC searches for toxic contamination

ADDISON COUNTY — After the Toxics Action Center published a January report illuminating 1,421 hazardous waste sites across Vermont, and 214 in Addison County, it’s understandable that many local residents are concerned about the safety of their land.

Fortunately, the Addison County Regional Planning Commission (ACRPC) has funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to run a Brownfield Program, which identifies and assesses contaminated sites at no or low cost to qualifying property owners in Addison County.

The Toxics Action Center recommends bold reform

VERMONT — “Toxics in Vermont: A Town-by-Town Profile,” a report released in January by the Toxics Action Center, is the most comprehensive and up-to-date report hitherto on the toxic contamination of Vermont’s environment.

After revealing many critical environmental issues facing Vermont, the Montpelier-based center recommends a number of ways the state should address these issues.

Their suggestions for a healthy environmental future are long and varied. Here they are in a nutshell:

Group defines hazardous waste sites

ADDISON COUNTY — The 1,421 Vermont hazardous waste sites identified in the Toxics Action Center report “Toxics in Vermont: a Town by Town-by-Town profile” were drawn from year-old statistics compiled by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) in their online database.

Tiger senior tops 'Independent' team

MIDDLEBURY — A senior who helped the Middlebury Union High School boys earn the best record among local squads is the IndependentPlayer of the Year and headlines the 2011 Addison IndependentBoys’ Basketball All-Star Team.

Center Carl Leduc’s emergence this winter played a big role as Coach Chris Altemose’s 10-12 Tigers finished strong, including a first-round road win in the Division II playoff and a near second-round upset of the defending champion. Two more Tigers are honored here.

Schools get a jolt of healthy energy

BRISTOL — Students at three Addison Northeast Supervisory Union schools have kissed desserts, processed foods and daily hamburgers goodbye because the ANeSU’s new Food Service Cooperative isn’t having any of it.

When Kathy Alexander, president of the Vermont School Nutrition Association, grabbed the cooperative’s reigns last summer, the food staff put down their box cutters and picked up their paring knives, changed recipes to include healthier ingredients, and instituted a tighter fiscal monitoring system.

Bristol police apprehend Champlain Farms burglar

BRISTOL — In the early morning hours of March 24, Bristol Police Officer George Crowe arrested 30-year-old Anoki J. Thompson of Salisbury. He was subsequently charged in the criminal division of Addison County Superior Court for the burglary of the Champlain Farms on Bristol’s West Street, where approximately $2,500-$3,000 in alcohol, cigarettes and other tobacco products was stolen.

Thompson was jailed on $25,000 bail, according to Police Chief Kevin E. Gibbs.

Japanese students get a taste of Vermont

VERMONT — A team of 17 Japanese students and six administrators from Tottori Prefecture bunked up with the families of 15 Vermont students and several teachers from Mount Abraham and Harwood union high schools last week. The students explored a wide range of environmental issues together by visiting such places as the University of Vermont, Middlebury College, the Statehouse and Mount Abe.
