FERRISBURGH — A second Ferrisburgh Board of Health hearing last week devoted to a rat infestation on the Sand Road property of a Ferrisburgh dog rescuer produced an agreement that the problem had at least temporarily ended, but did not yield a resolution to the issue.

MIDDLEBURY — The third-seeded Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team on Saturday overcame a slow start against No. 6 Burr & Burton for an 11-9 quarterfinal win that kept alive the Tigers’ hopes for a second straight Division I title.

The Bulldogs scored three times in the first 5:27 and still led at the half, 6-5. But the Tigers won the first five draws of the second half and netted three straight goals — by seniors Isabel Rosenberg, Ella Nagy-Benson and Andi Boe — in the half’s first 6:09.

BRANDON — Outstanding pitching by a Lake Region senior and one rocky inning on Saturday ended the Otter Valley Union High School baseball team’s dream of a second straight Division II title.

With Parker Brown tossing a two-hitter and striking out 12, No. 6 Lake Region defeated host No. 3 OV, 5-1, before a big crowd.

The 11-4 Rangers will next take on No. Harwood (14-2), with which they split this season. Coach Mike Howe’s 13-5 Otters suffered only their second D-II loss of the spring after a strong season.

VERGENNES — The new Addison Northwest School District superintendent traces her interest in education leadership to her first job in the field: teaching in multi-age classrooms for five years in Fayston Elementary School.

Sheila Soule, now 53, was then fresh out of Johnson State College with a Bachelor of Education degree. Soule said the collective approach to getting things done at Fayston Elementary made an important impression.

MIDDLEBURY — Sometimes statistics can be misleading. But when a high school boys’ lacrosse team earns advantages of 29-9 in shots on goal and 43-19 in ground balls those numbers usually show it is carrying play and probably outhustling its opponent.

And in its first-round Division I playoff game on Tuesday, No. 8 Middlebury Union High School racked up those stats against No. 9 Mount Mansfield on the way to a convincing 11-5 victory, one that could have been bigger if not for the 18 saves racked up by senior Cougar goalie Ben Mutolo.

Vergennes recycling center could be shut down

VERGENNES — The future of the Vergennes recycling and trash drop-off center is in doubt after city officials learned this past Tuesday that Casella Inc. in July would increase by 47 percent the cost of processing recycling brought to the center.

That increase, due to larger market forces, would boost the annual cost of the Canal Street center — an expense that is shared by the surrounding towns of Ferrisburgh, Panton, Waltham and Addison — by about $34,600 to roughly $107,600, according to City Manager Mel Hawley.

City reboots its search for new manager

Hawley, Mel.jpg

VERGENNES — The first effort to find a replacement for soon-to-retire Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley (pictured) was not productive, Deputy Mayor and search committee chairman Jeff Fritz told his fellow aldermen at last Tuesday’s city council meeting.

The committee’s efforts resulted in one candidate, according to Fritz, and the committee decided, he said, it would be “inappropriate to move forward just one candidate.”
