VERGENNES — The developer whose proposal for a six-unit energy-efficient Planned Unit Development (PUD) on Green Street was in July denied by the Vergennes Development Review Board now has his eye on a 14-unit PUD on a 7.43-acre Comfort Hill parcel in the Little City.

VERGENNES — City Manager Mel Hawley told the Vergennes City Council members at their meeting last Tuesday that Vergennes had been awarded a $37,500 grant through a Vermont Agency of Transportation program that will fund pedestrian-triggered flashing lights at five city crosswalks.

By next spring those lights should be installed along Main Street at its intersection with Panton Road, Macdonough Drive and Maple Street, and at Vergennes City Hall.

MUHS boys' soccer hold off Eagles for 1-0 victory

BRISTOL — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ soccer team’s edge in first-half possession translated into a 1-0 win over host Mount Abraham on Friday. But despite the Tigers’ territorial advantage the Eagles always seemed to be a counterpunch away as the game wore on.

As the teams enter the final week of the regular season the win kept the 7-1-3 Tigers in fifth place in Division I, just ahead of Rutland (8-3-1) and nipping on the heels of No. 4 Champlain Valley (9-3), although they will probably need help to catch the Redhawks.

Rally lifts VUHS boys' soccer over MVU, 2-1

SWANTON — The Vergennes Union High School boys’ soccer team on Friday rallied for a critical win at Missisquoi, 2-1.

The result put the Commodores at 5-5-1, good for seventh place in Division III with two games remaining on their schedule.

It appears all but certain they will host a first-round game unless they drop both their remaining contests while both No. 8 Thetford (4-6-1) and No. 9 Windsor (5-7) sweep the rest of their games, and even then the points could still favor VUHS.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council on Tuesday raised the city’s base per-unit sewer rate by $10 per quarter, or $40 per year, and will calculate a similar increase for Vergennes’ metered commercial sewer ratepayers.

The increase means the quarterly rate for a homeowner — or the owners of business spaces or apartments, per unit — will increase from $96 to $106, or from $384 to $424 per year.

Changes eyed after VUHS security breach: Procedures, locks among the options

VERGENNES — After the Oct. 5 incident in which two Northlands Job Corps students snuck into Vergennes Union High School during school hours, an evaluation of VUHS security procedures is under way that will almost certainly mean changes to the school’s physical plant and protocols, according to officials.

The male Northlands students entered VUHS through a back door that had been left propped open against school policy, and then talked their way into a classroom by posing as two of the German exchange students now visiting the school.

VERGENNES — The rain came down steadily but the momentum swung dramatically in Monday’s girls’ soccer game at Vergennes Union High School.

The decisive swing favored visiting Middlebury. The Division I Tigers rallied from a late two-goal deficit to tie the game, but had to dodge bullets in the first overtime before senior center midfielder Helen Anderson’s hard 30-yard shot bounced in off the right post with 1:38 to go in double overtime to give MUHS the 4-3 win.
