City officials and local church talk about sidewalk upgrades

By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council last week agreed to pay at least a quarter of the cost of a $92,500 Park Street sidewalk project and support a grant proposal by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church — which lies between Park Street and city hall — for half of its cost.

Council members on Feb. 13 approved a motion that would loan the church the remaining 25 percent of its cost, or $23,125, from the city’s Water Tower Fund, but also agreed they would consider upping the city’s share of the project.

FERRISBURGH — For the third time since putting it on the market in September 2010 the town of Ferrisburgh has seen a potential sale of its 34.91-acre parcel at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A collapse.

Town officials learned late during business hours this past Wednesday that Andrew Peterson, owner of Monkton’s Peterson Quality Malts, was ending his $337,500 deal to buy the prominent parcel based on the financing contingency in his purchase contract.

FERRISBURGH — Three candidates for the Ferrisburgh selectboard are on the March 6 Town Meeting Day ballot, but one of them is running unopposed — incumbent Michael “Red” Muir.

The other two candidates are both seeking to become first-time members of the board — and to replace long-time chairwoman Loretta Lawrence, who announced in January she would not file papers for another term.

Those seeking to replace Lawrence are Dennis Armell, who has twice run before for the Ferrisburgh selectboard, and first-time candidate Jessica James.

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball celebrated its Senior Day in style on Saturday, thumping visiting Mount Mansfield by the misleading final of 78-39.

When is a 39-point margin misleading?

When the Eagle starters in the game in the first and third quarters Mount Abe outscore the 7-11 Cougars by 52-12 and force 21 turnovers with relentless defensive pressure, both full-court and half-court. And in each of those quarters all five Eagle starters record points.

Vergennes City Council supports Perry as new mayor

Posted on February 15, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Senior Alderman and former Vergennes City Manager Renny Perry on Tuesday night told the other members of the city council that after a weekend of thinking it over he would be willing to serve out the remainder of recently resigned Mayor Michael Daniels’ term.

As senior alderman Perry automatically took over as mayor as called for in the Vergennes city charter when Daniels, citing conflicts with his fellow council members, resigned on Feb. 8. But Perry said he would only stay on until March 2019 if council members agreed.

City to keep voting hours the same – for now

Posted on February 15, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Board of Civil Authority (BCA) on Jan. 31 decided not to expand the city’s voting hours for primary and general elections, as some residents and city council members have suggested. But an ongoing city council update of the Vergennes city charter could still expand the community’s voting hours.

Unlike the rest of the county’s towns, Vergennes voting hours begin at 9 a.m., not 7 a.m. They then run to the universal closing hour of 7 p.m.

VERGENNES — A Monday boys’ basketball game at Vergennes Union High School might have looked like a mismatch on paper. The visiting Otter Valley team was fresh off a huge win over the top team in Division II and the host Commodore squad was coming off a 27-point setback to Mount Abraham.

Instead, the 9-6 Otters found themselves in a battle with the 3-10 Commodores, who fought back from 15 points down early in the third period to within five late in the fourth before the Otters held on for a 51-45 victory.
