New director at Ferrisburgh's Rokeby Museum has strong experience in marketing history

FERRISBURGH — Rokeby Museum’s board of directors did not have to search far and wide when museum director Jane Williamson announced this summer she would retire at the end of 2017 after 22 years leading the Ferrisburgh nonprofit.

Instead, the board looked around the table toward its president, Vergennes resident Catherine Wood Brooks, and she agreed to assume the title of Rokeby director, effective Dec. 3.

CougarHawks, injuries too much for MUHS girls' hockey squad

MIDDLEBURY — The shorthanded Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team hung with the cooperative Mount Mansfield-Champlain Valley team for most of two periods on Thursday, but the visiting CougarHawks pulled away for a 4-0 victory.

•  Oct. 28, 2016: Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. to Richard and Jodie Roorda, home at 2156 Panton Road, $114,000.

School food earning higher marks in Addison Northwest

VERGENNES — Earlier during her Vergennes Union High School years senior Emma Husk was not exactly thrilled with the school food, either its taste or its quality.

“It wasn’t just that I didn’t like it, but it made me feel like gross and slow and groggy,” Husk said.

Her friend and classmate Kaitlyn Brace, one of a group of seniors and juniors that usually eats lunch in a room off the school library, also gave a thumbs-down review of what used to be served in the VUHS cafeteria.

Aerospace plant in Vergennes still probing explosion

VERGENNES — According to a United Technologies Corp. spokesperson this week the company has taken steps to prevent a recurrence of the Dec. 8 explosion that injured four UTC employees at its Panton Road plant in Vergennes, but the exact cause of the event remains under investigation.

Panton to repair town hall steps; voters to rule on more complete fix

PANTON — When Panton residents arrive at town hall on Town Meeting Day, they will find safe new stairs leading up to the main gathering space — and a decision to make on other renovations to Panton Town Hall.

The decision to fix the deteriorating exterior stairs was made on Dec. 19, when Panton’s selectboard and Town Hall Committee met with representatives of Brandon’s McKernon Group and accepted that firm’s bid of roughly $29,000 for the work, with the provision it be done by March.

2017 brought drama, heartbreak and excitement through sports

ADDISON COUNTY — As 2017 closes, the Independent takes a look back at the top local sports stories of the year.

JANUARY

In our first paper of the year we reported that the Mount Abraham and Middlebury union high school wrestling teams finished second and third at the Tigers’ 45th annual Hubie Wager Invitational Tournament. Three Eagles — sophomores Roman Mayer and Gary Conant and senior Ben Murray — and one Tiger — junior Dustin Davio — won titles.

Addison Northwest likely to consider $7.6 million bond to update school facilities

VERGENNES — The Addison Northwest School District Board will probably propose to voters a $7.6 million bond on Town Meeting Day that would fund a long list of energy efficiency, fire safety and security upgrades at all four district schools.

And board members believe that bond can be mostly or even completely paid for without increasing taxes.
