Clippings: State your identity, state your piece

I don’t spend all that much time reading and writing comments on newspaper websites, but make a few exceptions for boston.com baseball coverage, Charlie Pierce blogs and Chad Finn columns; for Burlington Free Press articles on high school field hockey and football; and, only rarely, for an occasional Entertainment Weekly article at ewonline.com. In case anyone else out there reads the same stuff, I don’t mind outing myself as vermontk (boston.com) or Vermont K (BFP).

Divided council allows boat to dock

VERGENNES — In a split vote, Vergennes aldermen last week gave permission for the 16-passenger tour boat “Moonlight Lady” to use the city’s free docks for overnight stays next summer.
Aldermen at their Tuesday, Nov. 16, meeting debated whether the dock space reserved for the Burlington cruise boat might better be left open for boaters who make the seven-mile trip up Otter Creek from Lake Champlain — and who might be more likely to spend money in Vergennes — or whether the publicity Vergennes receives from the cruises might be a greater benefit.

Men's hockey off to a slow start

MIDDLEBURY — For the first time since 1993, the Middlebury College men’s hockey team stands at 0-2. And those two losses came in Kenyon Arena on Friday and Saturday to Tufts and Connecticut College, respectively, teams against which the Panthers had a collective record of 38-8-2 entering the weekend.

But more puzzling to Middlebury Coach Bill Beaney than the results — Friday’s 3-0 loss to Tufts and Saturday’s 5-3 setback to Conn. College — was the way he said the Panthers played.

After Saturday’s loss, Beaney talked about what he saw as the Panthers’ lack of fire and effort.

VERGENNES — Charlotte filmmaker Philip Fass has accepted and begun what he calls an exciting challenge from the Bixby Free Memorial Library Board of Trustees.

In the next 12 months, Fass, 58, plans to complete a 60-minute DVD that will not only express what the Bixby Library has meant to the five communities it has served since 1912, but also emphasize the central role the Vergennes institution can continue to play in the decades to come.

CASTLETON — In Saturday night’s Division II final at Castleton State College, the top-seeded Middlebury Union High School football ran into what Coach Dennis Smith afterward called a buzzsaw.

MIDDLEBURY — Saturday’s 5 p.m. Division II high school football final at Castleton State College between No. 1 Middlebury and No. 3 Rice will offer a contrast of styles, according to Tiger coach Dennis Smith.

The 9-1 Green Knights, who avenged their only regular-season setback with a semifinal win at Champlain Valley, and standout quarterback Christian McCormick like to throw the ball, Smith said.

“I would say (Rice’s offense is) probably 90-10, maybe 95-5, pass-to-run,” Smith said.
