FERRISBURGH — A seven-hour mediation session on Friday, April 27, that brought together the town of Ferrisburgh and the owners of the Vorsteveld Farm produced an agreement — to hold another mediation session, this time on Arnold Bay Road, where in the spring of 2017 contractors hired by the farm cut three-quarters of a mile of trees and shrubs along the road’s east side.

VERGENNES — The members of the Addison Northwest School District (ANWSD) Board are looking for help as they confront the same tough question as are school boards around Vermont — how should they best manage their school system as both student enrollment and state funding drops.

Specifically, the board is seeking input and ideas from community members this late spring and summer on how to meet those challenges.

Vergennes bar issued liquor license after infractions

VERGENNES — Despite three March liquor violations that resulted in $1,530 in fines for the City Limits Nightclub owner and a memo from Police Chief George Merkel stating his department has spoken to the bar owner “about overserving patrons,” the Vergennes City Council last week issued the bar its annual First Class Liquor and Live Entertainment Licenses.

The city council routinely grants such licenses and has not withheld or suspended one in at least 25 years.

VERGENNES — Vergennes Congregational Church Pastor the Rev. Gary Lewis, who will retire on May 6 after almost 29 years shepherding the South Water Street flock, didn’t have a sudden revelation he should pursue the ministry.

Mount Abe baseball topples Vergennes

BRISTOL — On a Thursday afternoon that saw flurries of snow, clutch hits from both high school baseball teams, and — understandably given the 35-degree weather — plenty of miscues, host Mount Abraham outlasted rival Vergennes, 15-14.

After Mount Abe bolted on top, 7-0, the Commodores came charging back. The lead changed hands four times in the final two innings before a bases-loaded, two-out miscue capped Mount Abe’s two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh and allowed the Eagles to win their season opener.

Hockeyville not a robot girl_3716 cmyk.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Even the dozens of kids running around playing inside Middlebury’s Memorial Sports Center on Saturday afternoon stopped to join the hushed crowd around the big-screen TV sitting on the concrete pad.

In all about 200 hockey lovers at a Middlebury Friends of Hockey Viewing Party were waiting to find out if the rink had won $150,000 in the nationwide Kraft Hockeyville USA contest.

But when National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman came on camera between periods of an NHL playoff game and announced the winner the crowd groaned.
