FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents in Australian balloting on Thursday backed a new town charter that would give the selectboard the power to appoint Ferrisburgh’s town clerk and treasurer — but only by a two-vote margin in low turnout.

The tally backing the charter was 61-59, and only about 5.5 percent of Ferrisburgh’s eligible voters showed up at the town’s Route 7 office building to make their opinion known.

VERGENNES — Several trees on the Vergennes downtown green are throwing too much shade, according to officials at last week’s city council meeting, specifically on the park’s struggling grass.

“I want to grow grass in the park,” said City Manager Mel Hawley.

The issue is simply “a tremendous lack of sunlight” choking off grass, Hawley said, adding as a result, “five major trees need to come out of the park.”

MIDDLEBURY – Middlebury Union High School baseball Coach Charlie Messenger said pitching hasn’t typically been the problem for the 1-10 Tigers, but it wasn’t sharp in their 10-2 loss to visiting North Country on Friday: Three Tiger hurlers combined for 11 walks, a hit-batsman and five wild pitches.

By ANDY KIRKALDY

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh selectboard members agreed to research a map issue raised at a Tuesday public hearing on the proposed new town plan. They also heard concerns about the town’s two industrial districts from 23 residents at Ferrisburgh’s Route 7 town hall.

The board could agree to make a change to mapping and zoning along a small stretch of Route 7 north of Lewis Creek, depending on what they find in planning commission minutes — if anything.

Lamoille too much for short-handed VUHS girls' lacrosse

VERGENNES — The first-year Vergennes-Mount Abraham cooperative girls’ lacrosse team was shorthanded on Saturday, and it showed in a 16-4 setback to visiting Lamoille.

The Commodores were missing four players for a variety of reasons; they played without a substitute and with players out of position in dropping to 0-4.

Still, there were flashes of good defense, passes strung together and strong ground-ball wins, all things that the Commodores are doing better as the season moves on, according to Coach Marikate Kelley.
