College women's soccer team claims NCAA Regional

HOBOKEN, N.J. — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team on Sunday night knocked off host No. 9 Stevens Institute of Technology in an NCAA Division III Regional, 2-0, to advance to an NCAA Sectional that the Panthers’ NESCAC rival Williams will host.

Panton preserving antique town building

Big-play Windsor stops Otter Valley in D-III football final

RUTLAND — Top-seeded Windsor made key plays on both sides of the ball vs. the No. 3 Otter Valley Union High School football team in Saturday’s Division III final at Rutland High School.

As a result, the Yellowjackets completed an 11-0 season with a 42-6 win, while the defending champion Otters settled for an 8-3 record and a setback in what was the program’s third straight appearance in a D-III final.

Lanpher and Van Wyck win Vergennes-area race

VERGENNES — Incumbents Rep. Diane Lanpher, D-Vergennes, and Warren Van Wyck, R-Ferrisburgh, captured the two Addison-3 seats in the Vermont House of Representatives on Tuesday in a four-way race.

Lanpher earned her fifth two-year term and was Tuesday’s top choice among residents of the five Addison-3 communities (Addison, Ferrisburgh, Panton, Vergennes and Waltham), receiving 2104 votes.

American Legion national commander reaches out to Vt. vets

VERGENNES — Recently elected American Legion National Commander Charles Schmidt of Oregon has several missions as he travels around the nation during his year in office.

Schmidt, a retired and decorated 27-and-a-half year Air Force veteran and 33-year American Legion member, stopped at Vergennes Post 14 on a Monday afternoon last month as part of his four-day visit to Vermont.

Schmidt, granting an interview after a Post 14 hot lunch and soda with a hunting story on the side, described one of his basic missions.

Men's soccer losses in NESCAC semifinal

AMHERST, Mass. — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team, seeded No. 6 in the NESCAC soccer tournament, on Saturday lost to No. 4 seed Hamilton, 2-1, in a semifinal played at Amherst College.

The Panthers concluded their season at 10-4-3, 6-4-3 vs. NESCAC foes, and as was the case in 2015 was snubbed by the NCAA Division III tournament committee in favor of Tufts. NESCAC tournament winner and defending NCAA champion Amherst was an automatic selection, but Tufts (9-5-2, 6-2-2 NESCAC) became the only other league team chosen.

Hartford bests Tiger football in D-I semifinal

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Top-seeded Hartford defeated the No. 5 Middlebury Union High School football team in a Division I semifinal on Saturday, 26-9, snapping the Tigers’ streak of reaching the finals at three years.

The Tigers finished at 6-4 after big wins in their previous two games, at No. 4 Essex in a quarterfinal a week before and vs. eventual No. 3 seed in the final regular season game. Hartford improved to 9-1, 9-0 in D-I and will face No. 2 St. Johnsbury (8-2) in the final at Rutland on Saturday.

Gym floor setback hits Mt. Abe

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School Athletic Director Devin Wendl summed up in a Thursday email the latest news about the school’s gym floor project:

“OUCH.”

On Wednesday afternoon, the contracting firm installing the new floor and fixing the water leaks that ruined the old gym flooring informed Mount Abe administrators that the company had to send workers to deal with an emergency at the University of New Hampshire.

Otter football upsets the Wasps, will return to D-III final on Saturday

WOODSTOCK — The defending Division III champion Otter Valley Union High School football team is going back to the final: The No. 3 seed Otters on Friday upset No. 2 Woodstock, 38-36, in a semifinal matchup.

The win was the 8-2 Otters’ sixth straight and it avenged a 41-14 regular season home loss to the Wasps, who finished at 8-2. OV will face No. 1 Windsor at Rutland High School on Saturday at 11 a.m. for the title. The Yellowjackets defeated No. 4 U-32, 22-0, on Saturday in the other D-III semifinal.

Ferrisburgh Town Hall to host first presidential voting

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh officials have taken steps to prepare for the first-ever Presidential election for which balloting will be held in Ferrisburgh’s eight-year old town office building.

They expect a turnout that could be up to 50 percent higher than any previous election held at the town’s Route 7 offices.

In 2012, 71.3 percent of the town’s registered voters (minus about 320 absentee voters), then around 2,100 strong, cast ballots for president in the Ferrisburgh Central School gymnasium, as had been the case for decades.
