HARTFORD — Swimmers from the Middlebury Aquatic Club Panthers and the Vergennes Champs fared well at this past weekend’s Vermont Swim Association 2009 Championships, held at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in Hartford.

For the Panthers, Gracie Weinberg won four under-10 girls’ races, and the under-12 boys’ 200-yard medley relay team of Chandler Devaney, Bobby Ritter, Cullen Hathaway and Nathan Lalonde swam to a win by eight-hundredths of a second in that event.

HANCOCK — By the time the Middlebury College Snow Bowl opens this winter, college officials expect a new $1.7 million, triple-chair lift will be ready to carry skiers and boarders to the top of the ski area, using the same route as the old lift.

The new lift will replace the 40-year-old Worth Mountain double-chair lift, which the college learned this spring no longer meets state licensing requirements. The lift in question is the ski area’s main route to the top, heading up the Allen Trail that overlooks the Snow Bowl’s base lodge.

VERGENNES — In 1999 Jason Ouellette, now a 26-year-old Vergennes police officer, became one of the first members of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes, which at that point met at the National Guard Armory across Monkton Road from Vergennes Union High School.

Like many of the more than 1,000 regular attendees in the club’s 10-year history, Ouellette enjoyed hanging out after school in a place that offered video games, pool tables, air hockey and Pokémon tournaments.

BARRE — Two close losses in this past weekend’s state championship tournament in Barre ended the Addison County American Legion baseball team’s hopes of repeating as Vermont champion.

AC entered the eight-team tournament as a co-favorite after winning the program’s first-ever Northern Division regular season title, but opened the tournament on Friday with a 5-4 upset at the hands of Southern Division No. 4 seed Bellows Falls.

AC eliminated Northern No. 3 Essex on Saturday, but Northern No. 2 Orleans-Essex-Caledonia (OEC) ousted AC on Sunday, 8-6.

Taking them out to the Sox game

Fenway Park didn’t look much different when I went there on July 7 for the first time in 26 years. Sure, under the new Boston Red Sox ownership the old ball yard is clean and shiny, and the signs — literally and figuratively — of corporate America are everywhere.

But one gets used to being bombarded with advertising, and logos of all sizes crammed into Fenway’s every nook and cranny have little impact on the essence of the House That Ruth Left.

MIDDLEBURY — Longtime Middlebury Union High School varsity football coach Peter Brakeley will return to the sidelines this fall and lead a Tiger squad, but will not return to the same post he left a year ago for medical reasons.

Instead, Brakeley, a cancer patient who also in January returned to his Middlebury Union Middle School teaching job after a medical leave, will take the reins of the MUHS junior varsity football team. He will replace his son, Gus Brakeley, who will assist the Middlebury College football program.

VERGENNES — On Saturday, May 10, 1969, Vergennes resident Jim McEvilla responded to a ringing phone, raced to city hall, fired up a Chevrolet station wagon parked in the rear garage and drove off to a nearby medical emergency.

That was the first of 94 calls in the first year in what is now the 40-year history of the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad.

That’s a far cry from the most recent 12 months, when VARS’ three ambulances, with full crews and complements of life-saving equipment and drugs, responded to about 860 calls for help from its Panton Road headquarters.

Updated: Crown Point Bridge reduced to one lane; officials cite deteriorating trusses

Posted on July 2, 2009 |
By John S. McCright and Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON — Because of deteriorating steel trusses discovered in a June inspection, New York Department of Transportation officials were poised on Friday to limit traffic to one lane on the Lake Champlain Bridge that links Addison with Crown Point, N.Y.

Signals at either end of the span, a crucial link between Vermont and New York State used by up to 3,600 vehicles a day, will allow eastbound and westbound traffic to take turns crossing Lake Champlain. Work will last at least through the end of August and possibly longer, said NYDOT spokesman Peter Van Keuren.
