When I sat down recently with soon-to-retire Ferrisburgh Central School teacher Alana Lilly, I asked her the standard question about the highlights of her 30 years at the school.

As is always the case, not all of an interviewee’s response made the final cut for a story. Not everything fit: After all, in 30 years, Lilly, like other teachers with similar careers, had made an impact at her school.

Jona Scott, Eagle golfers win sectional tourney

RUTLAND — The Mount Abraham Union High School golf team won Tuesday’s South Sectional at the Rutland Country Club while senior Jona Scott claimed medalist honors at the sectional event for the third straight spring.

Scott’s two-over-par 72 led the Eagles to a score of 349, a total that easily outdistanced runner-up Mill River, which scored 375 while being led by Johann Russell’s 76. Woodstock (379) became the third qualifier.

Vergennes nears deal on solar array; Ferrisburgh plan is called off

VERGENNES — While Vergennes nears a deal with Encore Redevelopment for a 150-kilowatt solar array near its city sewer plant, the Burlington firm has told the Ferrisburgh selectboard that further research showed its proposal for a 500-kw array on town-owned land was not feasible.

In Vergennes, aldermen and Encore could sign a deal as soon as this week for an array that could save the city at least $4,000 a year off its power bill for the next two decades.

VUHS softball hits, pitches past Mount Abe

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School softball team continued its march toward a high seed in Division I on Thursday, when the Commodores rode the two-hit pitching of junior Taylor Paquette past visiting Mount Abraham, 8-2.

VUHS improved to 10-4 and can clinch the No. 3 seed with wins in its final two games. The Commodores were set to visit Spaulding (9-4 as of Friday) on Saturday and will visit Middlebury (3-9 as of Friday) on Tuesday.

MUHS track and field hosts Mount Abe, Harwood

MIDDLEBURY — Despite some solid efforts on Tuesday by members of the Mount Abraham and host Middlebury Union High School track and field teams, Harwood took wins in both the boys’ and girls’ competitions in a three-way meet at the Middlebury College track.

The boys’ competition was close: The Highlanders edged the Tigers, 87.5-81.5, with Mount Abe (17) in third.

On the girls’ side, the scoring ran Harwood (92), Middlebury (52) and Mount Abe (32).

Tiger boys' lax sting Wasps with last-second goal

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse team got a last-second goal from senior attacker Christian Higgins on Monday to cap a rally from a 6-3 second-half deficit and give the Tigers an 8-7 victory over rival Woodstock.

The win also moved MUHS to 8-3 heading into a game scheduled for Wednesday against 8-3 South Burlington as the Tigers battle for a top-four seed in Division I.

Vergennes hires new co-principal

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board on May 13 hired a new co-principal for the 2013-2014 school year who has spent the past six years as the assistant principal of U-32 High School in East Montpelier.

Burlington resident Stephanie C. Taylor will begin this summer, said Addison Northwest Supervisory Union Superintendent Tom O’Brien.

City weighs smoking law versus policy

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their meeting last week moved closer to adopting a policy that would ban tobacco use in the area around the city pool and on the city’s central green.

A council subcommittee will look at model policies and ordinances offered last week by a tobacco prevention expert and make a recommendation at the council’s May 28 meeting.

A policy could be a gateway to a law that calls for tickets and fines, depending on how well the policy works.

City Council discusses funding for Vergennes Opera House

VERGENNES — At a City Council meeting last Tuesday where aldermen discussed a smoking ban in some public places (see story, Page 1) officials and supporters of the Vergennes Opera House also spoke in favor of the organization’s request for $10,000 in the next city budget. Aldermen budgeted $10,000 last year, but have not done so in the past.

Commodore lax defeats Eagles, 13-7

VERGENNES — Unfortunately for visiting Mount Abraham, the Vergennes Union High School boys’ lacrosse team chose Saturday to play its best game of the season — and probably of the past four years.

The Commodores bolted to a 4-0 first quarter lead and survived a second-quarter Eagle surge on the way to a 13-7 victory that moved VUHS to 4-6.
