City trees doomed horizontal.jpg

VERGENNES — Addison County Forester Chris Olson said last week Vergennes officials should look at other methods of helping grass grow in some areas of the city’s central green before considering removing trees, according to City Manager Mel Hawley.

Hawley said when he met with Olson on Wednesday morning that the forester also said none of the trees on the green, including two large maples behind the monument about which city official were worried, were so unhealthy they should be removed.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council on May 23 accepted from the city’s planning commission amendments to the city plan that would create a Solar Overlay District and related energy policies and fold the Vergennes Downtown-Basin Master Plan into the larger document.

The amendments would also add the state’s new recycling and composting law, Act 148, to the plan’s Solid Waste/Materials Management Section and move two lots along the far end of West Main Street from a Low Density into a neighboring Medium Density Residential Zone.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School softball team scored in every inning and got one-hit pitching from senior ace Payton Buxton on Wednesday to defeat visiting Burlington, 9-0, and apparently nail down the No. 5 seed for the Division I tournament.

The 12-4 Tigers lost a chance for a top-four seed and two home games the day before when BFA-St. Albans scored four unearned runs in the sixth inning to rally past them, 4-1, but Coach Polly Rheaume has faith that the Tigers can make a postseason run as long as they play to their potential.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Memorial Day Parade, a production of American Legion Post 14, is generally acknowledged as Vermont’s largest.

But according to Post 14 Service Officer and longtime parade organizer Henry Broughton, the parade got off to a humble start: It ran along just a short stretch of Main Street.

“It went from the memorial service down to the bridge,” said Broughton, now 85. “We only had two bands. We had a little band from the high school, and the Weeks School had a pretty good-sized band.”

He; his veterinarian mother, Denise Kessler; and family friend Tom Stuwe, a Barre veterinarian, will this summer ride bicycles 4,200 miles across America and raise money for a good cause while doing so.
