Vergennes gallery blends old and new: Art world veterans return to New England roots to follow dream

VERGENNES — Not too long after artists and Vergennes residents Cat Cutillo and Ross Sheehan met in New York City, they knew they wanted a space that would serve as a gallery and base of operations for her photography and his work in several artistic media.

Cutillo, 33, a New Hampshire native and Tulane University graduate, and Sheehan, 35, a Salisbury native, Syracuse University and 1996 Middlebury Union High School graduate, didn’t fulfill that goal in their first several years working in the art world together in New York this past decade.

Young MUHS boys' tennis team drops four matches

ADDISON COUNTY — Despite a few individual bright spots sprinkled in, the young Middlebury Union High School boys’ tennis team dropped four matches in a busy stretch late last week, one on the road and three at home.

The rebuilding Tigers, who have just one senior and one junior on the roster after a successful 2012, dropped to 1-6. They have one more match scheduled for their regular season: BFA-St. Albans is set to visit this Monday at 3:30 p.m. The Tigers defeated the Bobwhites back on April 15, 6-1.

Eagle baseball hits its groove, brings record to 5-6 with NCU win

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School baseball team kept up its recent winning ways on Thursday, when the Eagles rode the two-hit pitching of Josh Cyr past visiting North Country, 5-2.

The victory was the third in four outings for Mount Abe, which improved to 5-6.

Senior catcher Cody Alexander, who singled home a run and threw out a runner trying to steal in the Falcon seventh, said the Eagles — who rallied past Burlington earlier last week — are coming together.

Voters in ANwSU towns OK loan for VUHS roof

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union residents on Tuesday backed by a 724-160 margin the Vergennes Union High School board’s proposal to seek a five-year, $600,000 loan to fund new roofing on the school’s leaky classroom wing and auditorium.

Residents in all five ANwSU towns backed the proposal by wide margins: in Addison, 95-35; in Ferrisburgh, 149-34; in Panton, 47-9; in Vergennes, 410-72; and in Waltham, 23-10.

Otter baseball maintains unbeaten record

BRANDON — This spring the undefeated Otter Valley Union High School baseball team has relied on solid starting pitching, sound defense and timely hitting from the top of the order to the bottom.

The formula worked again on Tuesday, when the Otters knocked off visiting Leland & Gray, 6-1, to improve to 10-0. The Rebels dropped to 6-2.

After a first inning in which senior starter Justin Owen allowed a walk and two hits and an OV error also led to the Rebel run, both Owen and the defense settled down.

Mount Abe lacrosse eases passed Otter Valley boys

BRISTOL — The host Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ lacrosse team picked up a 12-3 victory over Otter Valley on Monday that the teams’ coaches viewed differently.

Eagle co-coach Paul Low saw a result sparked by junior attacker Travis Bachand’s five goals and three assists as a much-needed confidence boost for a team that had lost five straight after a 2-1 start, including three one-sided games last week.

Panther women's lax heads to NCAA semifinal

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team is heading back to the NCAA Division III final four after winning three tournament home games, capped by Sunday’s 10-8 win over Rensselaer in a regional final in Middlebury.

The Panthers opened by crunching Castleton on May 15, 20-3, and then knocked off Endicott, 13-4, on Saturday as the regional opened.

City backs $1.45 millon police station bond

VERGENNES — Vergennes voters on Tuesday backed, 296-186, the city council’s proposed $1.45 million bond to fund a new 4,611-square-foot police station on a North Main Street site between the railroad crossing and Kennedy Brothers. The small lot once was home to Vergennes Auto Sales.

City officials said they expect work to begin on the project in September, with a target completion date early in 2014.

MIDDLEBURY — The resurgent Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse program hit a bump in the road on Saturday, when an inspired visiting Mount Mansfield squad snapped a halftime tie on the way to a 14-7 victory over the Tigers.
