VERGENNES — The new Addison Northwest School District superintendent traces her interest in education leadership to her first job in the field: teaching in multi-age classrooms for five years in Fayston Elementary School.

Sheila Soule, now 53, was then fresh out of Johnson State College with a Bachelor of Education degree. Soule said the collective approach to getting things done at Fayston Elementary made an important impression.

MIDDLEBURY — Sometimes statistics can be misleading. But when a high school boys’ lacrosse team earns advantages of 29-9 in shots on goal and 43-19 in ground balls those numbers usually show it is carrying play and probably outhustling its opponent.

And in its first-round Division I playoff game on Tuesday, No. 8 Middlebury Union High School racked up those stats against No. 9 Mount Mansfield on the way to a convincing 11-5 victory, one that could have been bigger if not for the 18 saves racked up by senior Cougar goalie Ben Mutolo.

Vergennes recycling center could be shut down

VERGENNES — The future of the Vergennes recycling and trash drop-off center is in doubt after city officials learned this past Tuesday that Casella Inc. in July would increase by 47 percent the cost of processing recycling brought to the center.

That increase, due to larger market forces, would boost the annual cost of the Canal Street center — an expense that is shared by the surrounding towns of Ferrisburgh, Panton, Waltham and Addison — by about $34,600 to roughly $107,600, according to City Manager Mel Hawley.

Hawley, Mel.jpg

VERGENNES — The first effort to find a replacement for soon-to-retire Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley (pictured) was not productive, Deputy Mayor and search committee chairman Jeff Fritz told his fellow aldermen at last Tuesday’s city council meeting.

The committee’s efforts resulted in one candidate, according to Fritz, and the committee decided, he said, it would be “inappropriate to move forward just one candidate.”

VERGENNES — Before sitting down for their regular meeting this past Tuesday, Vergennes City Council members visited the city skate park, near the city pool and tennis courts off East Street, and discussed its future and maintenance issues there with two Vergennes Union High School students and staff member Lee Shorey.

They then talked the park over at the meeting at the city fire station.
