Eagle boys down Gumbies to win Middlebury tourney

MIDDLEBURY — The Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer team took control during the second half of Middlebury’s J.P. Carrara tournament final to defeat Green Mountain Valley, 2-1, and win the championship.

As well as giving them their second straight Carrara title, the win also pushed the Division II Eagles to 2-1 after an opening one-sided loss to D-I title favorite Champlain Valley.

Junior striker Grayson Webb, who scored both Eagle goals against the 1-2 Gumbies, said the Eagles have improved their play and will get a lift from their tournament results.

Late Fairfax strike topples Mount Abe girls

BRISTOL — In the first half of Saturday’s girls’ soccer game at Mount Abraham Union High School, Eagle sophomore Evy Jacobs ripped a 30-yard shot at the BFA-Fairfax goal. It easily beat the Bullet goalie, but a strong wind carried it just high enough to bang off the crossbar.

With 3:10 to go and the score 1-1, Bullet sophomore middie Morgan Young drilled a 30-yard shot at the same end. But the wind had died down, and her blast nestled in just under the framework and into the goal.

Panther soccer coach hopeful

MIDDLEBURY — It’s hard to call a 10-5-2 season too much of a disappointment, but for Coach David Saward’s Middlebury College men’s soccer team this 2009 record came one year after a trip to an NCAA Division III Sectional final and two years after the Panthers’ dream season, their 2007 run to an 18-2-2 record and an NCAA championship.

VERGENNES — With a new law in place offering more incentives for school districts to consolidate, Addison Northwest Supervisory Union officials have scheduled a series of public meetings this fall to explore the possibility of a Town Meeting Day 2011 unification vote.

High school athletes ready for action

ADDISON COUNTY — At about 10 a.m. this Saturday, runners from Middlebury, Mount Abraham and Vergennes union high schools will toe the line at a cross-country meet at Keenan Farm in Charlotte, while soccer players from Vergennes and Mount Abe will kick off at two different sites.

Three hours later, the new cooperative Mount Abe and VUHS football program will debut, as will the other local elevens.

Plan for Rt. 7 filling station, store headed back to court

FERRISBURGH — Champlain Oil Company’s proposal for a Ferrisburgh gas station large enough to handle truck traffic and including a convenience store and fast-food restaurant will return to Environmental Court on Sept. 7. Also on that date the judge hearing the case will make a visit to the Route 7 site that COCO hopes to buy and develop.

The site visit to the former home of the Ferrisburgh Roadhouse and Burdick’s Country Kitchen is set for 2 p.m., with the session at the Addison County Courthouse in Middlebury to follow at 3 p.m.

New Vergennes fitness studio to offer workout classes

VERGENNES — On Labor Day weekend, another new Vergennes fitness venture will join Vermont Sun Fitness Center in the Kennedy Brothers Factory Marketplace building.

On Sept. 4, Vintage Fitness Studio of Vermont, the brainchild of married Vergennes chiropractors Kimberly O’Boyle Palmer and Joel Palmer, will open in 1,500 square feet across the second-story hallway from Vermont Sun’s 3,000-square-foot city branch.

New blood reinvigorates Eagle football team

BRISTOL — Last fall, an injury-riddled Mount Abraham Union High School football team finished a winless season by dressing just two dozen players for its final game, a number that including freshmen who Coach Ernie Senecal didn’t want to throw into the breach. About a dozen athletes who started the season on the roster couldn’t play.

Times have changed: Over the winter, the Mount Abe and Vergennes Union High School boards approved the state’s first cooperative football program.

Markowski runs again for a Vergennes-area Vermont House seat

FERRISBURGH — If voters in the five towns of the Addison-3 district value persistence, maybe this could be the year for Ferrisburgh Democrat Liz Markowski.

Markowski, 61, a businesswoman who played a key role in the late-1990s revitalization of downtown Vergennes, has put her name before voters three times in seeking one of Addison-3’s two seats in the Vermont House of Representatives — in 2002, 2004 and 2006.

Vergennes to evaluate new parcel

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday took a step toward determining the value of the 8-acre parcel that the Vergennes ID school board earlier this year deeded to the city — aldermen agreed to fund a topographical survey of the tract off New Haven Road.

The land, which also abuts school property and the city recreation property the ID board also deeded to Vergennes, runs behind homes on the east side of New Haven Road and slopes downward to the rear.
