MUHS, Otter boys' hoop earn road victories

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school basketball action earlier this week, Otter Valley and Middlebury picked up road wins, while Vergennes lost at home.

The Commodores also hosted Missisquoi on Tuesday; see story.

The 9-9 Tigers were also set to visit Mount Abraham on Wednesday after the deadline for this issue of the Independent. The 4-14 Eagles will conclude their season with a visit to St. Albans on Friday night; they will open the Division II postseason on the road.

VUHS girls lose in D-II; Eagles No. 1, Otters No. 8

ADDISON COUNTY — The Division II girls’ basketball playoffs got under way Tuesday, when 11th-seeded Vergennes bowed out with a loss at No. 6 Lake Region, 81-41.

When the Vermont Principals’ Association released pairings on Monday, Mount Abraham (15-4) was, as expected, awarded the No. 1 seed.

But the Eagles were idle on Tuesday because two teams, including No. 16 Middlebury (1-19) elected not to participate in the postseason.

Three candidates seek town jobs in Ferrisburgh

FERRISBURGH — The emergence of a write-in candidate will give Ferrisburgh residents a choice on Town Meeting Day for the posts of town clerk and treasurer, both of which will open with the retirement of current Town Clerk and Treasurer Chet Hawkins.

On the Jan. 27 deadline, Hawkins’ grandson, David Hawkins, 23, filed his paperwork for town clerk. At the same time, Garrit Smits, 31, handed in his petition for treasurer.

MUHS, VUHS wrestlers prep for state meet

VERGENNES — The Middlebury and Vergennes union high school wrestling teams took fourth and fifth, respectively, at Saturday’s NVAC dual-meet championship hosted by the Commodores.

But more importantly, both teams’ podium contenders for the Feb. 28 state championship meet at Mount Anthony enjoyed solid tournaments.

Tiger boys' hockey picks up three wins

SWANTON — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team picked up three wins last week to continue its move up the Division II standings.

At 13-5, the Tigers have won 11 of their past 12 games to move into third place in the league, according to the Vermont Principals’ Association website. They have the best record within D-II — 12-1 — of all the league’s teams, with two of their losses to D-I foes and two to New York teams.

Tiger girls' hockey hangs on to top seed

NORTHFIELD — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team held onto first place in Division II with a tie and a win in two games last week.

Those results set up a crucial matchup on Wednesday between the 15-3-1 Tigers and visiting 15-2-2 Burr & Burton. The Tigers will be looking to avenge a 3-2 loss at Burr & Burton back on Dec. 21.

Eagle girls earn top seed in basketball rankings

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school girls’ basketball play last week, Mount Abraham locked down the top seed in Division II, Otter Valley apparently sealed a home playoff game, and Vergennes avenged its earlier loss to Middlebury.

Saturday concluded the girls’ basketball regular season, and the Vermont Principals’ Association will release official pairings on Monday morning.

Ferrisburgh voters face budget issues on Town Meeting Day

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents on Town Meeting Day will make a series of budget decisions that could have major impacts on town employees, who disagree with the selectboard on some issues, and also must decide to support school spending that would dramatically increase school tax rates.

They will also make decisions on races for town clerk and treasurer now that a write-in candidate has emerged to challenge the candidates who will be on the ballot, all of whom will be seeking to replace retiring Town Clerk and Treasurer Chet Hawkins.
