Mt Abe football blocked pass-FB-007.jpg

BRISTOL — If the Mount Abraham/Vergennes cooperative high school football team wanted to establish itself as a legitimate Division II playoff contender, it had to beat somebody besides opening day victim Montpelier, a program that forfeited its most recent game.

Mission accomplished.

On Saturday, the Eagle offense came alive after a slow start for 267 rushing yards, and senior Cody Alexander’s touchdown with 20 seconds to go and gave Mount Abe a dramatic 27-21 win over visiting Windsor, a D-II finalist in 2011.

ADDISON COUNTY — Middlebury overcame a strong effort by host Otter Valley to highlight area high school girls’ soccer play in the latter half of last week.

In other games, Mount Abraham used a late goal to post a road win, and Vergennes dropped a tight game to a top Division II team.

TIGERS OVER OTTERS

On Saturday, the Otters came out strong in their homecoming game vs. MUHS, pressuring the Tigers and taking a 1-0 lead when Taylor Aines lofted a shot home in the seventh minute.

Middlebury selectmen mull cheaper town office building

By Andy Kirkaldy

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday heard a suggestion from its town office steering committee that town officials might want to aim a little lower in designing a municipal office building.

The board also talked about capping taxpayers’ contribution to funding a new building at a 2-cent increase to the Middlebury’s tax rate, which officials said would raise about $2 million toward its cost over the length of a bond.

MIDDLEBURY — When Middlebury Union High School senior middie Lydia Allen’s 25-yard bomb hit the back of the net late in Tuesday’s first overtime, the host Tigers had defeated a stubborn Vergennes girls’ soccer squad, 2-1, and improved to 2-0.

And that’s as many wins as the program earned in the 2007, 2008 and 2009 seasons combined; equaled the number of its regular-season wins in Allen’s first varsity year, 2010; and is already halfway to its four-victory 2011 season.

It’s safe to say the Tigers are a bit pumped.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ soccer team on Monday used solid defense and midfield play and two goals from senior striker Akeem Pottinger to turn back Mount Abraham, 2-1, in a well-played final of the Tigers’ J.P. Carrara & Sons tournament.

Pottinger’s second goal came with about 10 minutes to go, snapped a 1-1 tie and capped a second half in which the Tigers controlled play. The Tigers improved to 2-0 and won their own tournament for the first time in several years.

Max Moulton (seventh), Sawyer Hescock (eighth) and Malcolm Groves (10th) led the Tigers, but they could not overcome the Highlanders, who took the next four places behind D-II winner Daniel Grosvenor of Montpelier on the way to a 31-point total.

MIDDLEBURY — A wayward — and unlucky — squirrel caused a widespread Sunday morning power outage in Middlebury that lasted more than an hour, a Green Mountain Power spokesperson said.

GMP’s Jeremy Baker said 1,652 customers served by the company’s downtown Middlebury substation in the Marble Works lost power at 7:42 a.m. on Sunday after the squirrel “made contact” with the top of a bank of transformers and shorted out their fuses.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday unanimously backed spending $150,000 from the town’s Land Conservation Trust Fund to buy 38.3 acres on Chipman Hill’s southeastern flank.

That approval caps talks between the town and the seller, Co-Operative Insurance Companies, that had progressed in recent months.

ADDISON COUNTY — Homeowners in a half-dozen Addison County towns who would like to take advantage of voter-approved Property-Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) district provisions to help finance energy-efficiency improvements will have to wait a little longer.

But an official of the Vermont Energy Investment Corp. (VEIC), which is expected to help the 32 Vermont PACE towns administer the program, said progress is being made in what he and others say is a complex process of putting regulations and financial backing in place for the $20 million statewide program.
