BRISTOL — The No. 1-seed Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer team struck for two early goals vs. visiting No. 4 Rice in Tuesday’s Division II semifinal, and then after surrendering a first-half score put the clamps on defensively to win, 2-1.

As a result, the Eagles (16-1) advanced to the D-II final for the first time since 2004, when Mount Abraham defeated Montpelier in triple overtime for the program’s only championship.

VERGENNES — Vergennes officials said at the city council meeting last week that they and a petitioner against aldermen’s endorsement of the proposed Addison County extension of the Vermont Gas Systems pipeline had mutually agreed to postpone his formal presentation of that petition.

Jeff Margolis had been on the Oct. 22 agenda, but instead, aldermen will hold what they expect to be a brief special meeting in city hall at 6 p.m. this Tuesday to accept a petition.

BRISTOL — On paper, Saturday’s Division III football quarterfinal looked like it should be a close game. The host No. 4 Eagles were 6-2, visiting Otter Valley was 5-2, and both had similar results vs. common foes.

Instead, the Otters played what Coach Jim Hill said might have been their best game of the season, and left Bristol with a 49-0 victory.

“They just played outstanding, and they’re getting better every game,” Hill said.

BRISTOL — The No. 3 Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team did not necessarily have a better record than No. 6 Spaulding entering Friday’s Division II quarterfinal: The Eagles were 7-3-3, compared to the Tide’s 9-5.

But the Eagles earned their record in what is easily Vermont’s toughest field hockey league, the Metro Conference, of which the Eagles are the only D-II member.

On Friday, it showed: Mount Abe welcomed Spaulding to the Metro with a 5-0 win.
