Pennywise, pound-foolish

In business, it’s good to be optimistic. It sets a good tone for customers, creates a good vibe in the work place, and inspires confidence among business-to-business peers.

It’s also imperative to be realistic. You have to call things like they are, and you can’t be a Pollyanna when things go awry.

Editorial: Pot bill's passage is just the beginning of the discussion

Posted on January 11, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

With surprising speed, Vermont’s House (last week) and the Senate (on Wednesday) passed H.511, a bill that legalizes the possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use. Gov. Phil Scott has said he will sign the bill into law — and it’s only the second week of the legislative session.

At 100, a model for all

Wow. That’s the first reaction I had when reading today’s front-page story about Mary Baker turning 100 this Saturday. It’s not just that she made this rare milestone, but that she continues to be so active.

Editorial: Of tax cuts and reality

Posted on January 8, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

As the year came to an end, Addison County taxpayers did what they rarely ever do: Rush into their town clerk’s office to pay their property taxes ahead of time — and with a sense of eagerness!

Why? To cash in on a tax deduction that will no longer be allowed in 2018 courtesy of the GOP’s tax bill.

Editorial: Ban the book, says 'Liar King'

Posted on January 8, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

The irony was rich. There’s Trump, the king of liars, outraged that an author could publish a book filled with comments that depict the president as a dunce. Even worse. His own staff calls him “unfit to be president,” “a moron,” uninformed and semi-illiterate. Worse yet, author Michael Wolff, through hundreds of interviews and several months spent at the White House observing Trump’s behavior, depicts the president as a petulant child propped up by a staff and congressional supporters desperate to contain his gaffes.

Editorial: Fewer students, high taxes require thinking outside the box

Posted on January 4, 2018 |

Among the top 10 stories in Addison County this past year, financing our public schools ranks right near the top. Specifically, coming to terms with declining student populations, while still experiencing increased costs, is a conundrum that frustrates taxpayers, school officials, legislators and the governor’s office alike.

And for most Vermont communities, the trends aren’t favorable, which means it’s only going to get worse.

Editorial: Reflections on 2017 – "Was it all connected to Trump, or did it just seem like it? "

Posted on December 28, 2017 |

Following the traumatic elections of 2016, it is no surprise that 2017 was a year fraught with chaos, protests and change. Trump was at the political center of much of that chaos as he sought to carry out promises made on the campaign trail, including banning Muslims from certain countries from entering the U.S., repealing the Affordable Care Act, reforming the tax code, pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accord and passing regulations that favored big business, big banks and the fossil fuel industry.

Editorial: Jones wins; Trump repudiated

Democrat Doug Jones’ narrow win over Republican Roy Moore to represent Alabama in the U.S. Senate is a huge relief for many Americans. In what is considered the most Republican state in the country, the win by Jones is considered a strong rebuke not only of Moore’s repugnant politics of racism, sexism and bigotry — as well as his alleged sexual molestations of teenage girls when he was younger — but also of President Trump’s politics of division and distraction.

Editorial: State's budget woes made worse by federal tax cuts

Posted on December 11, 2017 |
By Angelo Lynn

As Congressional Republicans eagerly anticipate their proposed massive tax cuts to the nation’s richest 10 percent, Vermont is facing projected revenue shortages for the 11th year in a row. The state recently reported the projected General Fund revenue for the upcoming fiscal year at $1,591 million, which is about $34 million more than the prior year. That represents a growth of about 2 percent across all state government. Expenses are higher, however, creating an expected budget shortfall of about $45 million.
