In a speech that entertained the 100 members present at last Thursday’s annual meeting of the Addison County Chamber of Commerce, renown sports writer Alex Wolff painted an exciting portrait of tomorrow’s Addison County: a county-wide destination resort steeped in Vermont’s rural traditions, blessed with farm-to-table cuisine, and focused on outdoor recreation.

Editorial: Theatrics and the pipeline

Posted on September 12, 2013 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The two objective arguments to the natural gas pipeline in Addison County can be broadly defined as: 1) those opponents who consider the Earth’s long-term environmental health as more important than the region’s short-term economy; and 2) those proponents who put the region’s economy first, believing that a strong economy is the means to transition to renewable energy.

Neither is wrong.

Editorial: AG race — Sorrell vs. Donovan

Posted on August 20, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Primary races often pose the toughest challenges for voters. Because the candidates often come from the same political framework and their political sensibilities are more similar than not, the choice hangs in the balance of which candidate can do a better job of executing policies that are a hair’s distance apart.

That’s the case in the Democratic primary race next Tuesday, Aug. 28, against incumbent Attorney General Bill Sorrell and challenger TJ Donovan.

Editorial: Fixing the deficit in 5 minutes?

Posted on July 23, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Rumor has it financial wiz Warren Buffett, one of the richest men in the world, has a sure-fire solution to reign in the nation’s looming debt: “I could end the deficit in five minutes,” he allegedly tells a CNBC news reporter. “You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3 percent of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election.”

The rumor is being spread via the Internet like wildfire and fueled by the millions of Americans upset with a dysfunctional Congress.

Editorial: A tale of two capitalists

Posted on July 19, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In a fascinating piece this Monday, New York Times columnist David Brooks portrays the presidential race as a battle of defining capitalism in the positive terms represented by Mitt Romney, or those terms cast in the negative by President Obama.

As with all columns that attempt to capture the complexities of a presidential race in a few hundred words, the argument is full of holes, but the premise has considerable merit and Brooks draws several thoughtful insights.

Editorial: Town faces tough sledding on new municipal building

Posted on June 21, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The Middlebury selectboard has some tough sledding if they are to convince town taxpayers to shell out $6 million to $10 million for a new municipal building to house a safe, some town records, a gym and a half-dozen offices. That’s primarily because it comes right on the heels of a new $4.65 million fire station that voters approved this past March, and a couple years earlier, about $7 million hit for the new Cross Street Bridge (the latter of which was an absolute necessity and has proven its weight in gold.)

Editorial: A light in the darkness

Posted on June 14, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

On Tuesday, Gov. Peter Shumlin gave a hug to Starksboro resident Kathy Duclos after a staged signing of a bill that seeks to revamp how the state conducts its search and rescue operations. The bill was sparked by the death of 19-year-old Levi Duclos, a Middlebury resident, who died of hypothermia three miles from the trailhead of a popular hiking area in Ripton. While his family searched into the night for the missing hiker, state police took the call at approximately 8 p.m. that winter night, but failed to send out a search party until the next morning.
