Last week, about 200 people came out on a rainy Thursday night to watch Bess O’Brien’s documentary film “The Hungry Heart.” It is a moving and emotionally powerful 93-minute film on prescription drug and opiate addiction.

While the main meeting room in the Unitarian Universalist Society church in Middlebury was packed, it also means about 8,500 people in the Middlebury community were not there. That is expected, of course. No event draws all people.

Editorial: Saving the GOP's sinking ship

By Angelo S. Lynn

When the Republican Party elected David Sunderland as its new party leader last Saturday in what was described as a contentious meeting, it was also, as Sunderland said, a deliberate change in direction.

“I think today what we can take away from this is that the Vermont Republican Party has voted for change — a change in direction, a change in tone, and we plan on going forward.”

Editorial: A welcome nod to civility

We appreciate the divergence of opinion expressed in today’s letters to the editor concerning Middlebury’s proposed municipal building/recreation facility. We also agree, in a nod to civility on this Halloween eve, that future discussion be less descriptive and honed to the issues at hand.

This past Wednesday two consultants working with the Vermont Department of Economic Development and the state commissioner were in Middlebury promoting economic development. A good crowd turned out, an energetic and informative three-hour workshop ensued, and the group was invited to join a follow-up session to help fine-tune a statewide comprehensive economic development plan.

Editorial: Middlebury's Tea Party? Rarely has this town see an issue hijacked by a small minority

By Angelo S. Lynn

In what is clearly an end-around tactic to derail the proposed town office project in Middlebury, a handful of town residents forced a vote on Tuesday that nullified a previous 5-1 decision supporting the measure — an action that may prevent the measure from coming to a public vote, all because of a dubious conflict-of-interest complaint.

News last week that the Vermont Department of Health Care Access (DVHA) has incurred excesses in its $2.8 million media campaign promoting Vermont Health Care Connect should prompt the Shumlin administration to scrutinize the media firm’s accounting and make appropriate adjustments.

Editorial: Needed — A return to reason

Posted on October 14, 2013 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

As the nation careens toward default on its national debt, and as Tea Party Republicans continue their reckless dismissal of those consequences, one wonders what happens to a political party that rejects rational argument and embraces a faith-based approach to its political foundation. When such faith fails, will the voters who embraced such tactics die on the sword or slowly turn toward the politics of reason?

Editorial: A tonic for bullying? Respect

Posted on October 14, 2013 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The death of a 16-year-old student at Mount Abe has sent shock waves throughout that school community, the town of New Haven and closest neighbors. Her suicide is particularly troubling because its cause is likely connected to senseless cyber bullying, hateful speech, and indiscriminate meanness cultivated by a culture of online anonymity. After grief, better education at the school and among the community is the appropriate, if inadequate, tonic.
