Clippings: Solar panels spark hot interest

OK, OK. We’d had numerous people stop and ask various members of the Addison Independentstaff about the new décor on our southern-facing roof.

We put up two banks of solar panels on our roof late this fall, and they’ve generated a lot more interest than I might have expected. So, here’s the story:

We’d had a slow leak in our roof this past fall, ruining a ceiling tile or two, and causing us to push the photocopier off to the side for a couple days. Nothing major, but something to fix.

Editorial: Job growth reality vs. myth

Mitt Romney, as well as most of the other Republican candidates for president, has run his campaign focused almost solely on President Obama’s sorry performance on creating jobs. Appealing to the conservatives in Nevada and Florida, he promised a robust period of job growth (of what percent he didn’t say) compared to the slow climb the job market has seen for the past three years.

As the Republican nomination approaches its foregone conclusion and hands the reins to Romney, President Obama’s response will pit reality against theory.

Editorial: The inevitable candidate

With his 15-point spread in the New Hampshire Republican primary over second-place finisher Ron Paul, Mitt Romney’s victory there and his eight-vote squeaker in the Iowa caucuses has some media pundits bemoaning the prospect that the gala may be over after the opening dance. True, the primaries are scheduled through mid-June and Super Tuesday isn’t until March 6, when 10 primaries (including Vermont’s) put 466 delegates up for grabs. But will it matter, by then, if Mitt has become the inevitable candidate after the first four contests?

Editorial: 'Vermont Strong' a fitting tribute

In Gov. Peter Shumlin’s first state-of-the-state speech to lawmakers last Thursday he was as good a salesman pitching the “Vermont Strong” message, complete with license plates to help those still in need, as he was ring-master while directing the recovery effort after Tropical Storm Irene. As well he should be. Being the state’s leader not only means coming up with novel and effective ideas, but also being able to bring those ideas to completion.
