BRISTOL — In 2012, when the University of Vermont dismantled its Centennial Field soccer bleachers, it sold off thousands of feet of weather-beaten redwood planks. Bristol luthier Micah Plante got the chance to pick through about 300 of those planks and selected just eight. Now, slice by 3/32-inch slice and curve by curve, he’s turning the redwood into acoustic and electric guitars.

MIDDLEBURY — World-renowned ballerina Wendy Whelan’s master class at the Middlebury College Dance Theater last Wednesday was filled with lively sounds — piano and percussion, encouragement from an elite artist and plenty of laughter.

The sounds that spoke most to the magnitude of the occasion, however, were the sounds of silences broken by synchronized gestures made with great concentration: the whisper of toes across the floor; the squeak of leather slippers twisting through pirouettes.

ADDISON COUNTY — The drought that continues to plague northern Vermont has begun to affect Addison County.

Residents in Ferrisburgh, Monkton and Starksboro reported that their wells have run dry.

Penny Oosterman said her well in Ferrisburgh dried up about a month ago.

“I had just bought a brand-new washer and dryer. Then one day I ran a load of laundry and nothing but dirt water came into the washer. It gunked everything up,” she said.

There hasn’t been any water since.

ADDISON COUNTY — Two county towns are wondering what to do with a windfall after receiving large bequests from a late resident.

The estate of longtime Bristol resident Andrew Johnson recently notified the town of Bristol that it would receive $103,008.83, and the town of New Haven was told it will get $34,336.28.

Bristol is where Johnson once served as a selectman and where his family’s business, A. Johnson Lumber Co., is located. He also served on the Addison Regional Planning Commission and the Mount Abraham Union High School board.

BRISTOL — The Wells Mountain Initiative began with a simple act of friendship.

As a 16-year-old student at Mount Abraham Union High School, Jordyn Wells traveled to Ghana in West Africa for a study-abroad program. In the coastal village of Kopeyia, just north of the tropical Atlantic, she met Victoria Ghalley and forged what would become a lifelong friendship.

VERMONT — Could humorous stories about Vermont fish-and-game wardens make for good television?

Hollywood producer Geoffrey Sharp, who grew up in Middlebury, believes it could.

Sharp recently inked a “shopping agreement” with “Vermont Wild” series author Megan Price and will spend the next year pitching the idea to television networks. Price’s five “Vermont Wild” books are a conglomeration of insightful and often-funny stories told from the perspective of Vermont game wardens.

BRISTOL — It’s never a good sign when a roof needs a tarp.

Unfortunately that’s exactly what happened this summer at the Bristol Federated Church. Wind and water have taken their toll on the building at 37 North St. and the roof has begun to fail.

“Small things had started happening,” said Diana Bigelow, a member of the church’s fundraising committee. “Then earlier this year it became a major issue.”
