LINCOLN — Two Lincoln institutions — the Burnham Foundation and resident Harriett “Hattie” Brown — both celebrated 100th birthdays this year. Thanks to a dedicated group of community members, those milestones will intersect this weekend.

“Silas Takes the Air,” a 1927 play set in small-town New England and written by Donald Jacobus, opens Friday night at Lincoln’s Burnham Hall, followed by a second performance of the comedy on Saturday. Both shows begin at 7 p.m.

BRISTOL — What might have been an open-and-shut grievance case in the Mount Abraham Unified School District (MAUSD) has led instead to a public dispute between the head of the teachers union and MAUSD board and superintendent, which has raised new questions about transparency in the district.

BRISTOL — After five years serving as the chief financial officer of the Mount Abraham Unified School District, Howard Mansfield has resigned, effective July 5.

BRISTOL — Late Thursday afternoon, aboard a yellow Bet-Cha Transit bus traveling 35 mph in the northbound lane of Burpee Road, with George Michael singing “Wake me up until you go-go” over someone’s cellphone speaker, the Bristol selectboard approved a request to alter the route of the June 29 Gran Fondo bicycling event.

It was the only recordable piece of business the selectboard accomplished at its June 13 special meeting.

BRISTOL — It has been confirmed: the emerald ash borer is destroying trees in Bristol village.

State officials notified the town on June 5.

Though the invasive and highly destructive beetle was first detected in Vermont in 2018, this is the first detection in the Champlain Valley, according to Bristol Town Administrator Valerie Capels.

The infested trees are located in a cluster on North Street, she said.

BRISTOL — Guiding children with stringed instruments from “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” to, say, Franz Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony” (No. 8 in B minor) requires a vast amount of knowledge and patience, plus, it would seem, a fair bit of magic.

But thanks to a collaboration between the Mount Abraham Unified School District Expanded Learning Program (ELP) and the Middlebury Community Music Center (MCMC), this is just the sort of magic that’s happening twice a week after school at Bristol Elementary.

BRISTOL — On Saturday morning, not long after the sunshine had broken through the clouds, casting a sparkle on everything that had been touched by rain, the Class of 2019 at Mount Abraham Union High School filed with pomp and circumstance into a great white tent, took their seats and awaited the word of their principal.

Jessica Barewicz ascended the stage, adjusted the podium microphone and, though almost no one knew it at the time, delivered her last ever commencement remarks at Mount Abe.

Mt. Abe teacher retires Bodell CMYK.jpg

BRISTOL — Amanda Bodell doesn’t remember the first day she entered a classroom at Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School in 1982, but she does remember the job interview.

“That was interesting,” Bodell said in a recent phone interview with the Independent. “I’m not sure I knew what to expect, but I was driving from Burlington to Bristol, and walked into a room and there was a U-shaped table with 15 people sitting around it. It was a little intimidating, although incredibly friendly and encouraging.”
