MTA mold FitzGerald.jpg

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School’s aging innards continue to occupy school district officials with emergency repairs.

In January, several square feet of ceramic tile fell off the walls of the downstairs boys’ shower room, the result of leaky water pipes. Testing came back negative for asbestos, but positive for mold.

No Refunds George & Jonny smiling cmyk.jpg

MONKTON — Anybody concerned about the “future of boys” should take a look at “No Refunds,” a vigorously playful and wonderfully messy YouTube channel created by three freshmen at Mount Abraham Union High School.

Inspired by Saturday Night Live and their favorite sports commentators, Monkton residents Jonny Armell, George Collette and (when he can make it) Tristan Parker head down to George’s mom’s basement every Tuesday afternoon, sit at a plastic conference table, hit record and let it fly.

The CFA is now the MAC.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — When people head out for a night’s entertainment at Burlington’s Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, they go to “the Flynn.” Farther east, when audiences attend events at the Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth College, they go to “the Hop.”

And at Middlebury College, when we catch brilliant student acting in the Seeler Studio Theater or marvel at world-class chamber music in Robison Hall or thrill at performances in the Dance Theatre, we go to “the MAC.”

Two candidates vying for Bristol selectboard seat

Posted on February 7, 2019 |
By Christopher Ross

BRISTOL — In the only contested race for Bristol selectboard this year Ian Albinson is challenging incumbent Ted Lylis for a three-year seat.

On Town Meeting Day, March 5, Bristol residents will choose between two candidates who both are non-native but have roots in Bristol.

Lylis, who has lived in Bristol for more than 40 years, was first elected to the selectboard in 2016.

Rather than establishing detailed policy positions for making Bristol a more affordable and pleasant place to live, he has preferred to stay flexible.

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School Principal Jessica Barewicz pulled her first all-nighter in 12th grade.

“We had to do a project based on independent reading, and I chose ‘The Fountainhead,’” she says, laughing. “That tells you a little bit about me as a child.”

A fat, philosophical novel published in 1943 by Russian-American writer Ayn Rand, “The Fountainhead” tells the story of a headstrong architect warring with himself and fighting against the system.

BRISTOL — As the Jan. 28 deadline approaches, Town Meeting Day petitions have begun trickling in from citizens running for public office and from organizations seeking fiscal support.

In the 5-town area in the northeastern part of Addison County only one race is set, but anyone interested in getting their name on the ballot must submit a petition to their town clerk by end of day this coming Monday.

In Bristol, at least three people have declared candidacy for two selectboard seats.

BRISTOL — More than $75,000 officially went up in smoke last week when the Bristol selectboard voted to write off a debt the town can no longer collect.
