BRISTOL — The Bristol Police Department is looking for new officers to join its force.

Officer Josh Otey, who had served the department since December 2011, departed March 23 in order to take a job up north, with the Essex police.

In 2016 the Vermont American Legion named Otey its Vermont Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.

After walk, climate activists intensify calls for action

MONTPELIER — At the conclusion of the five-day, 65-mile Next Steps Climate Solutions walk last Tuesday, Ashley Bolger and Clarissa Sprague visited Vermont House Speaker Mitzi Johnson in her Statehouse office and begged her to take action on climate change.

Speaker Johnson told them it was great to work in a state where people “really, really care” about the issue.

MIDDLEBURY — Last Monday, just days after launching his new book, “Falter,” then joining climate justice activists for the first leg of the 65-mile Next Steps Climate Solutions walk, Ripton author and 350.org founder Bill McKibben returned to Middlebury College to participate in a panel on the ethics of climate change.

Joining McKibben were British philosopher Rupert Read and climate scientist (and lead coauthor of the 2018 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report) Kim Cobb.

The panelists were asked to consider the following questions:

A 65-mile walk across Vt. takes aim at climate change

Climate walk_5366.jpg

MONTPELIER — Without a word, more than 300 climate justice activists filed into the Statehouse Tuesday afternoon. The youngest of them, carrying pussy willows, gathered in the center of the first-floor lobby, bathed in warm lamplight, and the rest filled in around them. Members of the press wove themselves into the group, too, jostling and beeping and clicking.

Once everyone had found their place, 600 hands shot into the air with a great swish of windbreaker and raincoat sleeves, and 3,000 fingers began to count down from 10.

New Haven may add town administrator

Posted on April 8, 2019 |

NEW HAVEN — New Haven is having a hard time hanging on to zoning administrators lately. Three have resigned in the last two years.

The 25-hour-a-week position comes with no benefits, but the New Haven Planning Commission has asked the selectboard to change that, hoping that more robust compensation will lead to less turnover.

RIPTON — Climate science is difficult for middle schoolers to grapple with.

It’s also a hard thing to have to teach them, said North Branch School science teacher Rose McVay.

RIPTON — Few images from Tom Rogers’ wildlife presentation in Ripton last Thursday captured the scale of climate change better than a map of the eastern United States.

Highlighted with warm colors, Vermont has been plucked from its place on this map and moved southwest to suggest what weather might be like here in the coming decades.

In the more hopeful scenario, late-21st-century summers in Addison County might feel like they do now in Huntington, West Virginia.

Hope flickers in Bill McKibben's latest book, 'Falter'

McKibben (credit Nancie Battaglia) CMYK.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — It’s not until the last page of Bill McKibben’s new book, “Falter,” that the word “love” gets used in a higher-order, capital-L sort of way.

“Another name for human solidarity is love,” he writes, “and when I think about our world in its present form, that is what overwhelms me.”

McKibben follows this with a brief celebration of the human goodness capital-L love inspires.

Local poets to enliven an art gallery opening

MIDDLEBURY — Few words in the English language look and feel as diametrically opposed to their definitions as ekphrasis. It derives from Greek and sounds very much as if it belongs among the terminology that that language has shaped for the medical profession. What ekphrasis describes, however, is a vivid, often dramatic, verbal description of a work of art.

Poets love this stuff. So do artists.
