BRISTOL — Thirty-one Main Street in Bristol has seen its fair share of turnover. Most recently it was ND’s Bar, before that, Dan’s Place, Reggie’s and No-Knee’s. Now it’s Hatch 31.

Sisters Sarah and Kayla Wisell, and their cousin Roberta Sinnock opened Hatch 31’s doors two years ago this May with the help of their father/uncle Matt Wisell. They spent the first month renovating the place.

Bluegrass Gospel Project 14.jpg

VERGENNES — Musicians are a tricky bunch. Passionate — yes. Playful — absolutely. Committed to their music — more than anything. So why is it that so many of our beloved bands break up?

In the case of the Bluegrass Gospel Project, their lead vocalist Colby Crehan is moving west for her husband’s new job at Grand Teton National Park, and the band figured it was as good a time as any to call it quits. They’re playing their last concert this Saturday evening at the Vergennes Opera House.

Behind the big, red nose: Meet a real clown

Woody Keppel Wellness4599.jpg

VERMONT — Clowns are creepy. Most of us are afraid of them, even if we don’t technically have Coulrophobia.

“I’m afraid of that kind of clown, too,” said Charlotte resident Woody Keppel, who’s been clowning since the early ‘80s. “Clowning is a misrepresented term... We’re not all the big Bozo, Ringling, scary clowns.”

So what kind of clown is Keppel? Think of him as an “eccentric character” having fun.

ADDISON COUNTY — Trust is perhaps nowhere more tangible than watching musicians perform together. Sure, the musicians trust their fingers to play the right notes and their voices to harmonize in tune, but it’s the trust between the musicians that’s something special. A quick glance, a knowing nod, a lean — these are the almost imperceptible moments when musicians are communicating and trusting that the others understand.

Va-et-vient honors its Franco-American roots

n Va-et-Vient LEAD.jpg

Music has been used as a way to communicate and connect for a long time ? a way to come and go freely across cultures, borders and languages. The best part is that you don’t have to have a fancy degree or know all your scales; all you need to make music is the passion (a sense of rhythm helps, too).

Salisbury native returns from West Coast to open gallery/studio in Vergennes

VERGENNES — Ross Sheehan is back in town, again. He and his wife, Cat Cutillo, bopped from New York City (where they met), to Reno, Nev., to San Francisco, to Vergennes, back to San Francisco, and are now back in Vergennes. Maybe this time for good?

The first time they moved to Vergennes in 2011, the couple fulfilled a longtime dream and opened Outerlands Gallery — showing their own work as well as others — at 37 Green St. But “dream jobs” pulled them back to the Bay Area in 2014.

MIDDLEBURY — Existential questions make us do funny things: Some buy candy-apple-red convertibles; others die their hair and head to Los Vegas. Carolee Ploof, did neither. Instead, she opened her own flower shop, Middlebury Floral and Gifts.

“At the end of the day,” Ploof asked herself six years ago, “what have I really accomplished?”

Well, a lot actually; let’s review:

BRISTOL — Keypads on our computers, smart phones or tablets might dominate a lot of our communication these days, but the good old fashioned pen hasn’t gone out of style either. Especially not the hand carved wooden pens made by Jim Cunningham in Bristol.

Early in his woodworking career, Cunningham ran a rustic handmade furniture company and was a member of Vermont WoodNet — a local group of woodcrafters. “WoodNet was a good group to help me get going,” he said.
