Pierre Vachon_7131 by Steve James.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Odds are you’ve seen Pierre Vachon around Middlebury. And odds are you might have been a little scared.

It’s OK, you’re not alone. Guys in black leather trench coats, with tattoos, and enough muscle for a quartet are intimidating, for sure.

But we also all know that usually there’s more than what meets the eye. And Vachon is no exception.

MIDDLEBURY — After a full day at work, the gym (because we’re all trying to hang on to those New Year’s resolutions) and some dinner, lots of us head for that dent in the couch and settle in for a TV show, cup of tea and then bed. But sometimes it’s nice to shake things up; give that couch a rest and go out on the town.

What is there to do in Middlebury past 8 p.m. on a weeknight, you ask?

Good question.

BRISTOL — When you’ve been doing something for more than 30 years, chances are you’ve experienced some changes. Brenda Myrick knows the feeling. In fact, she’s in the middle of a shift right now.

“I’m at the point where I’m ready to stop painting watercolors the way I used to,” explained Myrick, who primarily painted commissioned portraits of loved ones — people, and pets, too.

What do you think happens when a Russian/French major graduates from Middlebury College and decides to go pick macadamia nuts on a farm in Maui, Hawaii? Why she gets promoted to making smoothies, of course… then guiding horse tours… then teaching English in France… landing a three-book deal with Del Rey Books, a subsidiary of Random House.

LINCOLN — Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start with an artist who’s been painting for more than 50 years. Especially an artist like Kathleen Kolb, whose work is so subtly refined and elegant it feels effortless and natural. But here’s the dirty little secret… it’s not. It’s still hard work; beloved work, yes, but work nonetheless.

So we’ll start at the very beginning — a very good place to start.

Rebecca Chomyn portrait_0363.jpg

During her sophomore year in college, then 18-year-old Rebecca Nase Chomyn showed up to her first welding class in a skirt and flip flops. That was the day they were doing a demo of plasma cutting.

“Basically you’re shooting fire toward the ground as you cut metal,” said Chomyn, who graduated from Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn, N.Y., with a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in sculpture. “And I had flip flops on! I never did that again.”

Although her wardrobe choices weren’t great, her metal work was awesome.

MIDDLEBURY — There’s something wonderfully old school about trains at the holiday season. It’s a time to dig out the heavy, metal locomotives, set up the rails, connect the circuits, and let the trains chug faithfully around the tree, circling presents and mesmerizing the cat. Forget screen time, trains are good ol’ fashioned toys.

Don’t have a train to play with at home?

MIDDLEBURY — Audience members take their seats, the house lights dim, then the stage lights, queue the music and the cast takes the stage — it’s another performance at Town Hall Theater. But on Saturday, Nov. 24, the curtain will rise on a cast that drools, sheds and walks on four legs (most of the time). That’s right, dogs.

Sixteen canines of all shapes and sizes will join Johnny Peers on Saturday for the Muttville Comix’s second performance at the Middlebury theater. They first came to the Town Hall Theater in January 2017.
