Vermont kids wanted for luge tryouts

ESSEX JUNCTION — This weekend, boys and girls will be sliding down the streets of the Burlington area on wheeled sleds for a chance to be recruited by USA Luge.

The so-called “slider search” is an official nationwide athlete recruitment tour that introduces luge, the fastest sport on ice, to young athletes ages 9-13. This summer, Burlington is one of eight cities that USA Luge will visit.

Lyft brings ride share service to Addison County

MIDDLEBURY — The popular rideshare company Lyft last month began servicing areas of Vermont, including 13 of Addison County’s 23 towns, along with Burlington and Montpelier. While Uber, another app-based rideshare company, has made its way to Vermont’s biggest cities, Burlington, Montpelier, Killington and Rutland, Lyft is the first to service Addison County.

County bike club gains traction: New leaders revive group and expand membership and projects

MIDDLEBURY — Amanda Hall didn’t have much experience when she first started mountain biking.

“I only owned a department store bike so that I could ride with my kids,” she said. “I was never that into biking.”

But four years ago, she mounted a bike anyway, and soon found herself navigating the rooted and rocky singletrack mountain biking trails in the hills of Addison County, along with a group of guys (because Addison County’s bike scene is as dominated by males as anywhere else) who pushed her forward.

Big games, little games, board games, card games, strange games, familiar games, games in boxes and opened games, spread about the shops on various tables.

Behind the scenes with composer Jorge Martin

Middlebury composer Jorge Martín, 57, has traveled around the country presenting productions of his various works, including “Before Night Falls.” It is an opera based on the memoir of Reinaldo Arenas, a Cuban writer who rebelled against the Castro regime. Martín himself was born in Cuba, and he moved to the U.S. when he was a young boy. He recently returned from Miami, where “Before Night Falls” was presented at the Florida Grand Opera, and talked with the Addison Independent's Emma Cotton about his work.

Celebrated journalist shares her experiences

MIDDLEBURY — Journalist Amy Goodman brought stories from her on-the-ground reporting to Middebury College this past Wednesday, April 26, delivering a message of hope and faith in independent news media.

The founder and anchor of the radio show and podcast “Democracy Now!” spoke to an almost-full McCullough Center about her 20 years in the field, recounting tales from her new book, released Wednesday, Democracy Now!: 20 Years Covering the Movements Changing America.

Meet the Chefs: Erin and Sanderson Wheeler from the Bobcat Cafe in Bristol

BRISTOL — f there’s one thing to be said about the owners of Bristol’s Bobcat Cafe, Erin and Sanderson Wheeler, it’s that they have embraced the visions of their elders.

The Bobcat was first owned by Robert Fuller, also a former owner of Burlington’s Leunig’s and Pauline’s in South Burlington. From Fuller, the Wheelers gleaned the idea of “third place.”

Taking the plunge into icy waters? No problem, say dozens of kayakers

BRISTOL — Several dozen kayakers on this past Saturday challenged the lively New Haven River at the Ledges Race, despite freezing temperatures and ice that clung to boulders on the water’s edge.

Race organizer Ryan McCall said the weather didn’t deter the competitors in the annual race down a mile-long stretch of rapids.

Addison County restaurants win highest honors at tourism summit

STOWE — Two Addison County restaurants were given top honors at Vermont’s annual Tourism Summit, held last week in Stowe. Ian Huizenga of the Bar Antidote and Hired Hand Brewing Company in Vergennes was named Top Chef, and Middlebury’s Two Brothers Tavern was named 2017 Restaurateur of the Year.
