Climate alert! Naturalists see global warming hurting northern species

ADDISON — The changing climate is significantly affecting northern wildlife, nationally renowned naturalist Sue Morse recently told a gathering of 30 people in Addison. The Jericho resident told stories not just of the influence of warming in Vermont, but also gave first-hand accounts of changes in the Arctic, showing striking photos of both the environment’s natural beauty and the trauma it has endured.

Symposium focuses on women and leadership

Last week the Middlebury Women Leaders, a student-run organization at Middlebury College, held a three-day-long symposium featuring discussions and workshops led by women.

Among the events were a conflict mediation workshop by Middlebury College president Laurie Patton; a Q&A with Nancy Gibbs, the first female editor-in-chief of TIME Magazine; a discussion with the local Nulhegan Abenaki Native American Tribe; and a fashion show that benefitted She Should Run, a nonpartisan nonprofit that encourages women to run for public office.

Screenwriters find inspiration at Bread Loaf

On the evening of Jan. 17, up in the snowy hills of Ripton, a group of screenwriters gathered in the main dining hall of the Bread Loaf Inn. They clinked wine glasses and munched on bacon-wrapped scallops — their collective effervescence the product of a successful week-long retreat.

Exploring women and leadership; Middlebury College to host symposium this week

MIDDLEBURY — The first female editor-in-chief of Time magazine will be among the speakers featured late this week at Middlebury College’s “Women’s Leadership Symposium.”

Organized by a student organization called the Middlebury Women Leaders, the symposium from Thursday, Jan. 18, to Saturday, Jan. 20, will be comprised of workshops, lectures and discussions given and moderated by woman leaders such as Middlebury College President Laurie Patton and Time editor-in-chief Nancy Gibbs.

The King's Singers: Back by popular demand

The last time the King’s Singers — a London-based, all-male a cappella sextet — came to Middlebury, they were a hit. Actually, that’s an understatement.

The 2015 concert was scheduled to take place in Robison Hall, but it quickly sold out and was moved to Mead Chapel, where it earned a standing ovation from the crowd. Audience members requested a repeat, and after two years of organizing, spearheaded by Middlebury’s Performing Arts Series Director Allison Coyne Carroll, the King’s Singers are coming back.
