BRISTOL — f there’s one thing to be said about the owners of Bristol’s Bobcat Cafe, Erin and Sanderson Wheeler, it’s that they have embraced the visions of their elders.

The Bobcat was first owned by Robert Fuller, also a former owner of Burlington’s Leunig’s and Pauline’s in South Burlington. From Fuller, the Wheelers gleaned the idea of “third place.”

BRISTOL — Several dozen kayakers on this past Saturday challenged the lively New Haven River at the Ledges Race, despite freezing temperatures and ice that clung to boulders on the water’s edge.

Race organizer Ryan McCall said the weather didn’t deter the competitors in the annual race down a mile-long stretch of rapids.

Climate may challenge sugarmakers: Maples at risk from global warming

ADDISON COUNTY — Earlier this week, in the hills of Starksboro and Huntington, wind whipped audibly through Hillsboro Sugarworks’ 15,000 sugar maples. Light rain tapped on the roof of the 1979 sugarhouse and dripped onto the ground. Sue Folino, co-owner of the operation with her husband, Dave, eyed the quivering trees warily.

“It’s days like this that can rip the forest apart,” she said.

Two Brothers gets a facelift

MIDDLEBURY — One afternoon last week, in the newly renovated kitchen of Two Brothers Tavern’s underground Lounge, executive chef Matt Corrente prepped one Neapolitan pizza after another to the cranked-up backdrop of Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See.” Surrounded by boxes and soon-to-be installed equipment, Corrente moved about the new kitchen space, whose chic black walls create an open facade that protrudes out of the corner next to the bar.

Meet the chef: The Marquis; it's more than just the movies

MIDDLEBURY — There are plenty of reasons to love Addison County. We’ve got sprawling farmland, a giant summer fair, historic villages, a vibrant shiretown, lakes for swimming and mountains for hiking — you name it. But there’s one thing our beloved home has sorely lacked.

Mexican food.

Washington County’s got the Mad Taco. Chittenden County’s got El Gato Cantina and El Corjito. Windsor County’s got the Mojo Cafe. So what can Addison County residents do when we crave spicy peppers and guacamole?

GOSHEN — Sarah Griswold, Blueberry Hill Inn’s winter chef, might be new to Vermont, but she’s been cooking like a farmer since she was a child.

Griswold grew up on a sheep farm in Danbury, Conn. There, she ate from the garden, canned her own fruits and vegetables, and learned to cook with food she grew herself. In the summertime, she worked with her uncle, who had a catering business based in Rhode Island.

“I’ve loved it since I was little,” she said.

MONTPELIER — Greta Hardy-Mittell, a junior at Middlebury Union High School, stood on the steps of the Vermont Statehouse last Saturday afternoon counting the speakers left until it was her turn. Clutching a folded paper copy of a self-authored poem, the nerves she had quieted that morning began to resurface.

The sign-waving, pussy-hat-wearing crowd before her — expected to be only a few thousand — was estimated at 15,000-20,000 by Vermont State Police, making it the largest protest ever held in Vermont, according to organizers.
