Greg Dennis: Choices for the desert island list

Posted on April 18, 2019 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

If you were to be stranded on a desert island, what would you want to take with you?

BBC Radio has been asking that question for nearly 80 years. The show’s guests, known as “castaways,” are interviewed about what eight pieces of music, along with one book and one luxury item, they would choose to accompany them should they be banished to their own personal Elba.

Greg Dennis: Taking the next steps on climate change

Posted on April 4, 2019 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

The future launches at you in the most unexpected ways. It happened to some of us a few years ago when the climate movement suddenly took wing in Vermont.

As the climate crisis now grows ever more dire, the movement is shifting into higher gear. That’s got me reflecting on all the changes and where we might go from here.

Greg Dennis: Driving through a sea of words

By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

The idea of driving for pleasure has never appealed to me. But as we slog through whatever early spring throws at us, there are small pleasures to be found from bumper stickers.

Here’s one I saw presaging April 15: “Unlike taxes, death doesn’t go up every year.”

There’s a mommy van out there with a sticker that mourns the driver’s past status, declaring “I used to be cool.”

Greg Dennis: John Lennon moves from sedition to stamp

America is the great cultural appropriator.

What used to be taboo is now commonplace. The once incendiary is mainstream.

Back in the 1930s it was a national language controversy when Vivien Leigh, in a scene from “Gone with the Wind,” asked Clark Gable, “Where shall I go? What shall I do?” and he replied, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

Damn is, after all, a four-letter word.

Greg Dennis: Random notes from the ski slopes

Posted on March 7, 2019 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the sex expert, says that skiers make the best lovers. “They don’t sit in front of a television like couch potatoes,” she explained. “They take a risk and they wiggle their behinds. They also meet new people on the ski lift.”

She might have added that skiers get the health benefits of spending a lot of time in the great outdoors and that they are, by and large, extroverts. Maybe it’s all that time on the chairlift and in apres ski. Whatever the reason, skiing and conviviality just seem to go together.

Greg Dennis: No-cost ways to fight global warming

Posted on February 21, 2019 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

Nearly three-quarters of Americans now agree that global warming is a real thing. But a recent national survey also found that a majority would not be willing to spend $10 a month to address climate change.

Many local voters may be among those who wouldn’t be willing to pay extra, even to help stop this looming catastrophe. The good news is that there are many things, free of charge, that we can do to make our voices heard about global warming.

Environmentalists are accustomed to losing. As Joan Baez put it, “little victories and big defeats.”

So when an influential organization actually makes the right environmental decision — and then goes even further — it’s cause for celebration.

Greg Dennis: Up in smoke?

Posted on January 24, 2019 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

It’s now legal in Vermont to grow and possess small amounts of marijuana. But that newly enacted law is just one step toward full legalization.

With our state Senate ready to approve a bill to tax and regulate cannabis in various forms beyond the “flower” that is so popular for smoking, all eyes will initially be on the Vermont House: Will it approve legislation allowing the legal sale of other cannabis products? Or will the House just Bogart that bill and get nothing passed?

Greg Dennis: Nixon was worse than Trump

Posted on January 10, 2019 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

One of the benefits of age is perspective, a sense of what matters most over time. With that perspective, I suggest that we have seen worse than Donald Trump, and that the republic will survive.

This is not to underestimate the horror that is the Trump presidency.

On top of denying climate change and removing environmental protections — on top of all the lying, the overt racism and the demeaning schoolyard taunts on Twitter — on top of all that, we have the train wreck that was the Trump campaign and subsequent cover up. We already know this:

Greg Dennis: Baby, it's politically incorrect outside

Posted on December 20, 2018 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

I had to laugh when I read that the Politically Correct Police are upset about the words to “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” Can’t we just have a little innocent holiday fun without putting every male-female interaction under a microscope?

Then I took a closer look at the song’s lyrics. And decided that in this case, the word cops do have a point.
