Gregory Dennis: Ready or another automotive romance

Posted on October 29, 2015 |
By Gregory Dennis

I bought my first car 41 years ago at Weybridge Garage. It was a 1970 VW Bug with 90,000 miles and four years of Vermont road rust.

I had acquired just enough money from college graduation presents to buy a car. So I bought the first Bug I saw.

Owning a VW was virtually a generational requirement at the time. Plus my girlfriend and I needed wheels as we embarked on the trial-by-fire of living together.

Gregory Dennis: When summer gets gobbled down

Posted on October 15, 2015 |
By Gregory Dennis

I awoke today and found

Frost perched on the town

It hovered in a frozen sky

And gobbled summer down

–Joni Mitchell, “Urge for Going”

The firewood truck came yesterday. A cord of the sweetest smelling maple and oak and even some birch, from the venerable A. Johnson operation.

Gregory Dennis: On a summer's high peaks quest, Middleburry woman climbs 46 peaks

Posted on October 1, 2015 |

Greg Dennis column color n Amy Sheldon on Skylight-03.jpg

Amy Sheldon wasn’t actually lost — she pretty much knew where she was in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks — but she felt lost. And alone.

In the dead center of the Adirondack wilderness and hiking by herself, she was headed up Cliff Mountain.

One source refers to Cliff as “the great Adirondack vertical swamp.” And as she started the climb on this cool, rainy day, Sheldon faced a trail with a lot of treacherously slippery rock.

Gregory Dennis: Bernie's Vermont vs. Hilary, Round 2

Posted on September 17, 2015 |
By Gregory Dennis

Does Bernie Sanders stand any chance of being elected president?

When I wrote here a couple weeks ago that he does not — and that Hillary Clinton will be the next president — I heard from many of my liberal friends who were dismayed by that prediction.

Didn’t I know that Sanders is leading some polls in New Hampshire and Iowa? Hadn’t I heard that even a lot of liberals don’t like or trust Clinton? And whose side was I on, anyway?

Gregory Dennis: Why Bernie’s campaign will burn out

Posted on September 3, 2015 |
By Gregory Dennis

It’s presidential election season again, and many Vermonters are clearly excited about the upstart candidacy of their own Howard Dean. He’s speaking truth to power and reminding the Democratic Party what it’s supposed to stand for — for working people and not the monied class, for the environment and not the polluters, for a tempered foreign policy and not cowboy aggression.

Gregory Dennis: Affluenza and opening the American mind

Posted on August 20, 2015 |
By Gregory Dennis

American retailers have a problem.

It used to be that retail stores could buy their merchandise, then “pile it high and watch it fly” out of the store.

Now, in what some analysts think is a sea change in consumer behavior, Americans have begun buying fewer things. Instead, we’re spending more of our money on experiences.

The New York Times business section recently reported that while sales on dining, homes, travel and vehicles are up, spending in large department stores is flat or declining.

Greg Dennis: A few thoughts offered for debate

Posted on June 25, 2015 |
By Gregory Dennis

Some fragments for the column today. Perhaps in the future, each of these sketches will grow up to be columns.

The town of Middlebury plans to oversee development of the parking areas between the Ilsley Library and Otter Creek. As the last major piece of soon-to-be-developed land in the downtown, this site has the special quality of being owned not by a company or an individual, but by the town itself.

So shouldn’t we expect something from the project that has town-wide benefits?

Gregory Dennis: The human factor in Vermont politics

Posted on June 11, 2015 |
By Gregory Dennis

It’s easy to watch political figures on television or read about them in the paper and forget one thing.

Those are human beings up there.

It may seem that those who live and breathe politics are thick-skinned creatures programmed to the point of being semi-robots. Different from you and me.

They look completely consumed by the process. Everything is a calculation, and every move dissected under the microscope.

But the people at the podiums also bring every emotion to the table.

Gregory Dennis: A fence viewer in need of a fence

Posted on May 28, 2015 |
By Gregory Dennis

Good fences make good neighbors, Robert Frost famously wrote in “Mending Wall.”

Perhaps that’s why Cornwall and many other Vermont towns still appoint official fence viewers who, according to the Vermont League of Cities and Towns (VLCT), “examine fences within the town when requested to do so by the selectboard.”

Turns out, though, that this duty is essentially bogus. “The role of the fence viewer has become somewhat limited,” VLCT’s literature explains, with some municipalities abolishing it altogether.

Gregory Dennis: No exit from the healthcare maze

Posted on May 7, 2015 |
By Gregory Dennis

Journey with me now to the mysterious world of healthcare — where nothing costs what they say it does, and no one can figure out what it really costs, anyway.

Where you’re never quite sure of the differences between your premium, deductible, co-pay, coinsurance and out-of-pocket maximum.

Where your health history is now available through an online patient portal — but you can’t remember the password. Where the doctor will see you in a few minutes, but you’re just as likely to end up seeing a physician assistant.
