Between the Lines: Christmas for Christians - and Jews, too?

Posted on December 13, 2012 |
By Gregory Dennis

Is Christmas a Christian holiday?

Maybe the people who keep urging us to put the Christ back in Christmas have a point. At a time when a growing number of Americans identify with no religious institution, we’ve lost much of the holiday’s religious value.

But many historians believe the historical Jesus was born in the spring. The timing and some of the rituals of modern-day Christmas (e.g., the tree hauled in from the forest) appropriate pagan, solstice celebrations for the purposes of the dominant religious paradigm of our time.

Between The Lines: Kitchen confidential and the eating season

Posted on November 29, 2012 |
By Gregory Dennis

Tis the season for eating. And therefore, tis also the season for cooking.

I can’t help but notice that my favorite cooks (i.e., anyone willing to make me a meal) have particularly strong preferences when it comes to how things are done in their kitchen.

A kindly woman can turn ferocious when guarding her kitchen. Not even a glass of water may be filled within the confines of her kingdom without permission, lest the wrong glass be filled or water be drawn from the tap when there’s filtered water on hand.

Home Improvement: Advice on building a dream home

NEW greg Dennis house Job_10026a~10x7.jpg

Addison County resident and columnist Gregory Dennis recently completed construction on a new home. We asked him to comment on the process and share with our readers some of the lessons he learned through the process. Here is his response:

The biggest thing I learned was the value of working with an architect. It will save you money and he/she can take care of many of the details you would otherwise have to handle yourself. I was amazed to find out how much a good architect could do beyond just coming up with a good design.

Between the lines: Pondering the Maine meaning of life

Posted on September 27, 2012 |
By Gregory Dennis

“We’re all bozos on the bus, so we might as well enjoy the ride.”

— Wavy Gravy

There’s something about the Maine coast that just swallows up your daily cares.

It buries them in the sandstone that’s shot through with quartz veins rising up from the ocean floor. Splinters them in the light playing off dark blue lagoons. Washes them away in the swell of waves slamming the shore and slipping back into the deep.

Between the Lines: Adventures in Moving, Vermont Style

From the ancient caves of Lascaux to the 21st century towers of Dubai, there has always been something magical about the ways in which humans convert nothingness into spaces for living.

Fascinating though the process may be, though, it rarely goes as planned. And sometimes it’s the unexpected wrinkles — the shelf in the wrong size that gets turned into a lovely coffee table, the windows placed too low but leaving room for paintings — it’s these little twists in the process that alchemize the mere physical object of a house into memories, and a home.

Sixty years of serious mistakes

Posted on July 5, 2012 |
By Gregory Dennis

It’s been said that on the radio, a hockey game — with its endless series of missed shots, errant passes and unintended consequences — sounds like the broadcast of one long mistake.

As I sit on the verge of turning 60, sometimes I’m tempted to conclude that the story of my life would, like the broadcast of a hockey game, sound like one long mistake. Or at least one long unintended consequence.

That got me wondering what a look-back broadcast of those 60 years would be like — perhaps a dialogue between me and the Cosmic Inquisitor.

Between the Lines: From a master ecologist, life everlasting

Bernd Heinrich opens his exploration of the natural way of dying, “Life Everlasting,” with a quote from Khalil Gibran that sets the tone for the rest of this absorbing work:

“If you would know the secret of death you must seek it in the heart of life.”

It’s death, and its life-giving virtues, that are the focus of this 16th volume from Heinrich, a Hinesburg resident and professor emeritus at UVM.

Between the Lines: A Vergennes jail and freedom of speech

Posted on May 10, 2012 |
By Gregory Dennis

The jail in Vergennes where Congressman Matthew Lyon was imprisoned is long gone. But his legend lives on, in part thanks to another former congressman and current U.S. senator, Bernie Sanders.

When you’re sailing against the prevailing political winds, it can be reassuring to know that others have done so and eventually prevailed.

Maybe that’s part of the reason that Sen. Sanders chose in a recent “Vermont Bernie Buzz” newsletter to highlight Matthew Lyon’s story.

Between the Lines: Fallen bridge connects climate dots

Of all the destruction wrought in Vermont by Tropical Storm Irene, the most widely seen was the collapse of the covered bridge in Bartonsville.

The bridge’s destruction by the rain-swollen Williams River made The New York Times. A handheld video, shot as the bridge sank into the river, was shown on “The Today Show.” New Yorker writer John Seabrook chimed in with “Requiem for a Covered Bridge.”
