Movie review: Us

Us— Running Time: 1:56 — Rating : R

Do go to “Us” if you want to watch good actors deliver a genuine horror movie. Do not go if you have a weak heart. I must add that I watched it alone in an empty theater and thought several times that I might not make it. That’s because a strong cast sets out to terrify us and succeeds.

Movie review: The Aftermath

Movie Review.jpg

The Aftermath— Running Time: 1:49 — Rating: R

The bones of “The Aftermath” are solid. The setting — Hamburg in ashes after World War II — is haunting. The interpretation by the cast is first rate. Why then does the film become a little ordinary during its last third?

Movie review: Gloria Bell

Gloria Bell.jpg

Gloria Bell— Running Time: 1:42 — Rating: R

“Gloria Bell” is a provocative movie that is likely to stir women and bore men. For women it is a trigger to think about what it felt like after their last child had grown and left home — a time of new freedom that can carry great sadness for those who had been completely absorbed by roles they loved. As they stand newly free in their 50s, they face the challenge of figuring out their next life. They are standing in a chasm that is free of duty and empty of the love they had known.

Movie review: Ash is Purest White

Ash is purest white.jpg

Ash is Purest White— Running Time: 2:16 — Rating: R

Do go to “Ash is the Purest White.” Let’s look at the tough part of this new film that is earning excellent reviews from the pros. The Chinese language pulls our eyes to the running translations at the bottom of the screen. That means we miss some important facial expressions and quick behavioral actions that are key to the culture and dialogue of this very good movie.

Everybody Knows— Running Time: 2:13 — Rating: R

“Everybody Knows” hands us a plot that is hard to follow but intriguing enough to hold us. Because there is no way to describe the plot details without ruining the suspense, let’s start with a short description of writer/director Asghar Farhadi’s family drama.

Movie review: Transit

Transit.jpg

Transit 1— Running Time: 1:01 — Rating: R

History hits every age group differently, sometimes with inconceivable hardship. In wartime, transit can be the zone that harbors survivors on the losing side. This is the story of Georg, a quiet man who faces internment and death if he fails to get on a ship sailing for Mexico or America. “Transit,” the movie, captures all this.

Joan Ellis reviews the Oscars

Posted on March 11, 2019 |

Green Book.jpg

In January, I wrote about five movies that I thought deserved Oscars (“Green Book,” “The Wife,” Bohemian Rhapsody,” “A Private War” and “RBG.”) Of these, “Bohemian Rhapsody” won several and “Green Book” won Best Picture. All five were rooted in truth and gave us the stories of remarkable people who had the courage to do something about their beliefs in the tough culture of their time. True stories beautifully made are powerful.

Movie review: They Shall Not Grow Old

Posted on March 4, 2019 |
By Joan Ellis

Movie Review.jpg

They Shall Not Grow Old— Running Time: 1:39 — Rating: R

“They Shall Not Grow Old” is a movie unlike any other ever made. Filmmaker Peter Jackson’s gift to us is his restoration of a film made during World War I. The original was faded, broken and jerky. Jackson’s brilliance here lies in his determination to use the original film adding only color and music to bring it into this century. He adds no actors, no modern characters, and invites to stay for his on-camera comments after the film ends. I hope you stay.

Movie review: Never Look Away

Movie Review.jpg

Never Look Away— Running Time: 3:08 — Rating: R

The title: “Never Look Away.” The length: three hours and eight minutes. You plan to skip it? For all that time I never once wanted to leave my chair and the whole film still runs quietly through my mind. Its length is part of the reason. It takes all that time to do for us what writer/director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck intends while painting his portrait of an artist based on a leading German artist, Gerhard Richter.

Movie review: The Upside

Posted on February 18, 2019 |
By Joan Ellis

Movie Review.jpg

The Upside— Running Time : 2:06 — Rating: PG-13

The Upside almost sinks in an intense and overlong introduction to its characters. That done, the actors calm down and act the roles they have been handed while we in the audience have at last become interested in them. When this happens, this cast delivers.
