After a lukewarm movie year, most of the Oscar nominated films are in theaters now. If you missed any, all are worth seeing before Oscar night on Sunday, March 4. Hollywood not only saved the best for year’s end, they reassured us that there are some brilliant performers of all ages still acting for our pleasure.

Movie review: 'The Shape of Water'

The Shape of Water.jpg

The Shape of Water — Running Time: 2:03 — Rating: R

This is a tough one. On one hand, “The Shape of Water” offers us hatred, cruelty, nudity, violence, murder and beatings. On the other, it offers a tender love story between two afflicted people who lose themselves in a beautiful romance. The time is the Cold War. The place is a dark, decrepit Baltimore building that is a lab space for creating a creature that will become a weapon against the Russians.

Movie review: 'The Greatest Showman'

Posted on February 5, 2018 |
By Joan Ellis

Movie Review The Greatest Showman.jpg

After opening to middling reviews, “The Greatest Showman” has become one of the surprise hits of the season and no one seems to know why. On one level, it is a chronicle of the rise of P.T. Barnum from a young unemployed man to creator of what Americans remember as “The Greatest Show on Earth.” On another, it tells the tale of the circus that toured the country by train for spectators who could never get to New York. Why do audiences love the movie after so many critics dismissed it?

Movie review: 'The Post'

The Post.jpg

The Post— Running Time: 2:33 — Rating: PG-13

“The Post” does a grand job of filling in the cracks of a major historical scandal. It often takes a long time to do that — in this case five decades. Over time, the primary players confess in regret or die in silence while others feel entitled at last to pull together the details of a major event.

Movie review: 'I, Tonya'

By Joan Ellis

I, Tonya.jpg

I, Tonya — Running Time: 2:24 — Rating: R

“I, Tonya” is not a story about an ambitious mother driving her reluctant daughter. It is about the ambitious daughter who has loved skating since she first stepped on the ice when she was three years old. When her mother, Lavona (Allison Janney) sees that, she devotes her own manic, focused energy to propelling Tonya (Margot Robbie) all the way to the Olympics. In driving her daughter forward, this mother becomes a monster, but Tonya also wants that gold medal.

Movie review: The Darkest Hour

Movie Review Darkest Hour.jpg

Darkest Hour — Running Time: 2:05 — Rating: PG-13

When Winston Churchill became England’s Prime Minister in 1940, he was already an accomplished man. He had served his country in the Military during World War I and had received a Nobel Prize for literature. He ascended at a time of political chaos and controversy as his country watched Nazi Germany absorb Europe. It certainly was England’s “darkest hour.”

Movie review: 'Call Me By Your Name'

Movie Review Call Me By Your Name.jpg

Call Me by Your Name — Rating: R— Running Time: 2:12

If you have any reservations about seeing “Call Me by Your Name,” I suggest that you erase them and go right now. How does director Luca Guadagnino get us to forget within minutes any reservations we might have about seeing a film about male homosexuality? He does that by giving us a work of art.

The Movie Review: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

movie review Star Wars.jpg

Star Wars: The Last Jedi — Running Time: 2:32 — Rating: PG-13

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” unfolds in two utterly different locations: an austere, treacherous island in the most remote part of the Galaxy and the vast, infinite sky that is the setting for war. The steep, rocky island establishes a mood of danger while Rey (Daisy Ridley) tries to lure Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) away from his isolation (“It’s time for the Jedi to die”) and back to the life in the sky that he left.
