Many times during the week, your transactions may be punctuated with: Have a great day! (Move on! There’s a line behind you.) This cliché has crept into our language, replacing “thank you for shopping with us” or “good afternoon.” Where did this phrase come from? According to Wikipedia, in the 1970s, the American supermarket chain Kmart opened a store in Brisbane, Australia. The workers were trained to say, “Thank you for shopping at K-Mart. Have a nice day.”

Happy 200th anniversary of your birth Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817). I am sure you would have something to say about being remembered so many years later for the writer you dreamed to be in your lifetime. Before “Walden” was published, you spoke at the Concord Lyceum, in your Massachusetts hometown, about the interrelationship of God, man and nature. You ended your oration with these eight words “In wildness is the preservation of the world.” Little did you know how long that gift would keep on giving.

We’re coming up on our nation’s 241st birthday, so I thought to celebrate by reading the Declaration of Independence. 

Its second sentence is perhaps the most familiar to us: “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

I love walking outside. It is my favorite form of exercise, but I have a few ground rules. The temperature has to be minimum 20 degrees, with no wind, and it can’t be icy or driving rain. When the weather fails the test, I put on music and stretch and dance. My current favorite is the soulful, acoustic album “Temple at Midnight” by Miten.

If Bob Nist weren’t a dentist he could be a stand up comic. The best part about my appointment with the dentist was his Midwestern brand of humor. His jokes were like bad puns. It was his timing — the way he drawled them out — that made them funny.

His hygienist was another story. An appointment with Charlotte was torture. She dug into my gums and left me bleeding. Then, the verdict would be a recall in three months. If I got into the habit of flossing, I might make it to six months. It was worth a try.

The idea of a bucket list comes from the idiom “kick the bucket.” It assumes that there are experiences or achievements that one hopes to have or accomplish during one’s lifetime. I resist the idea that I should have a bucket list.

According to World Life Expectancy, a white woman in Vermont lives to the average age of 82.61. So, if I live out my natural lifetime, I might be around for another twelve to twenty years. Possibly long enough to see my grandchild grow into a young woman — to see who she becomes.

“Would you take my picture?” asked the woman ahead of us as my friend and I entered the Cesar Chavez Park at the Berkeley marina. She wanted one with the city of San Francisco in the background and one with the San Francisco Bay. As my friend snapped the photo, she said to her family in Iran, “Come to America — I love my country!”

A few days, weeks, years.” Not so long ago, I came to the insight that I had reached an age when there is more to look back on than ahead. “And when time no longer lies ahead of one,” writes Bachman, “other things have to be lived for…grandchildren, perhaps. One finds a way of living for the sake of someone else’s future.”

The poet Rainer Maria Rilke wrote:  A billion stars go spinning through the night, blazing high above your head.  But in you is the presence that will be when all the stars are dead.  Fear can make lights go out.  But we cannot allow fear to dim the presence of the light within.  That light connects us with the stars.  In this darkest time of the year, we see more stars, but if you are missing daylight, now that we are past the winter solstice, the sun is rising earlier and setting later.
