Local rescue org seeks to help dogs displaced by Hurricane Florence

MONKTON — Hurricane Florence is getting a lot of deserved publicity for battering humans, homes and businesses along the East Coast, and in particular the Carolinas. But many of the storm’s smallest victims are suffering in anonymity — they are the pets that have been abandoned or were caught by surprise in the 80 mph winds and flooding.

Gov. Scott gets earful on county tour; observes rail project, discusses civility

Addison County police investigations inspire novel

MIDDLEBURY — Acclaimed Vermont author Joseph Olshan often looks to the news headlines as inspiration for his suspenseful novels; his 10th book, “Black Diamond Fall,” is no exception.

And Olshan’s Addison County readers will immediately recognize two of the real-life events that help build the foundation of “Black Diamond Fall”: the disappearance and tragic death of Middlebury College freshman Nick Garza in 2008, and the vandalism spree at the Robert Frost Farmhouse in Ripton in December 2007.

Driver killed in crash with Cornwall fire truck on Route 125

CORNWALL — Area residents were voicing shock Monday morning in the wake of Sunday afternoon’s frightful collision between a pickup truck and Cornwall Fire Department utility vehicle on Route 125 that took the life of 44-year-old Deane Rubright of Shoreham.

In addition to the tragic loss of life, the accident has left Cornwall Volunteer Fire Department members shaken and temporarily without a utility vehicle, which was used to carry all the force’s equipment to the many fire and accident scenes it responds to each year.

Shoreham apple fest offers fruit, music and pig kissing

SHOREHAM — The Shoreham Apple Fest on Sunday, Sept. 16, will mark its 10th year of uniting people for a day of music, food, festivities, recreation and even a shameless display of pig smooching. It all aims to raise funds for the community’s Platt Memorial Library.

Rough Cut ditches bull; Marquis Theater gets a scrubbing

Former resident pens biography on historic figure

MIDDLEBURY — Soledad Fox Maura has fond memories of her formative years in Middlebury during the late 1960s and early 1970s. She attended Mary Hogan Elementary School through third grade. She got to meet many interesting students and academicians through her mom, Prof. Marisol Maura, who taught Spanish language, literature and history courses at Middlebury College. Her mom would occasionally have students over to the house for wine, cheese and animated discussions on topics ranging from the Spanish Civil War to the simmering civil unrest of the ’60s.

Railway deal helps to solidify Middlebury's big dig

MIDDLEBURY — Two competing railroads have signed an agreement clearing the way for a freight train detour around downtown Middlebury during the summer of 2020, when a concrete tunnel will be installed in place of the Main Street and Merchants Row overpasses.

The agreement is between Vermont Rail and its competitor, the Genesee & Wyoming — which owns New England Central Railroad. It allows Vermont Rail to detour its trains around Middlebury using New England Central tracks.

New device at Porter speeds recovery for hip replacement patients

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center President Dr. Fred Kniffin recalled the day five years ago when the hospital’s orthopedic surgeons asked for a “Hana Table.”

Veteran TAM trailmaster steps back after 25 years

MIDDLEBURY — Former Middlebury Area Land Trust Director Amy Sheldon during the early 1990s imagined the Trail Around Middlebury as an emerald necklace. A 19-mile path weaving its way through lush green hills, waterways, rolling pastures and other natural gems that could be experienced for free.
