BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School’s 118 graduating seniors looked pretty much the same this past Saturday — all dressed in maroon gowns and square, tasseled caps — but commencement speaker Jessica Little likened them to a diverse array of puzzle pieces searching for the right fit.

ACSD busing expenses to skyrocket next year

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central School District officials will need to do some creative accounting to mitigate the financial impacts of a new, three-year busing contract that will result in a 41.5-percent hike (approximately $400,000) in transportation costs next school year compared to the current pact that expires on June 30.

In years two and three of the contract, the rate will increase by 2.5 percent over the previous year. So in FY2019-2020 the contracted amount will increase to $1,139,369, and in FY2020-2021, the amount will increase to $1,167,853.

SALISBURY — Most kids learn about good environmental stewardship through school books, documentaries and/or their parents.

Students at the Salisbury Community School have been doing their environmental learning where it matters most — outdoors, where they’ve been picking up litter in their community and pulling invasive weeds from nearby Lake Dunmore.

She’s now taken the helm of a different nonprofit — the United Way of Addison County — which will rely heavily on her fundraising skills in its mission to help area agencies get the resources they need to assist local folks struggling to make ends meet.

MIDDLEBURY —Addison Central School District residents in 2016 took the major step of consolidating their educational governance structure from eight boards to one. District leaders argued the move would lead to more efficient and less costly delivery of public education.

Two years later, ACSD officials are preparing a “facilities master plan” that could further reduce district expenses and offer better educational opportunities.

Bray, Chris ONLINE 2010.jpg

MONTPELIER — Sen. Chris Bray, D-New Haven, was thinking big when he first ran for the Vermont Senate six years ago. His goals were pretty much all predicated on producing systematic changes to Vermont’s agricultural, economic and environmental landscapes.

So it’s no coincidence he has, during his legislative career, taken a lead role in the Farm-to-Plate, renewable energy, Act 250, and clean water bills — initiatives designed to prove their worth in the next five to 10 years.
