Malcolm, Kafumbe, Morse win ACSD election

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central School District voters on Tuesday decided a five-person race for three seats on the ACSD board by choosing James Malcolm, Betty Kafumbe and Lorraine Morse to help represent Middlebury’s interests on the 13-member unified panel.

Finishing out of the running were incumbent Steve Orzech and first-time candidate Ryan Torres.

The ACSD board presides over Middlebury Union Middle and High schools, as well as the elementary schools in Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham and Weybridge.

Middlebury Legion celebrates 100-year anniversary

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury American Legion Post 27 is currently celebrating a century of helping area veterans and community causes, a philanthropic tradition they realize will require a major infusion of new members in order to continue.

It was on March 15, 1919, that the American Legion was born at the national level. And Middlebury-area veterans wasted no time forming a post of their own, chartered on Aug. 4, 1919. It boasted 29 founding members, many of them World War I veterans.

ACSD spending plan passes easily

MIDDLEBURY — While other school budgets in Addison County had some difficulty finding favor with voters, the Addison Central School District budget vote proved decisive an non-controversial.

Meanwhile the technical high school that serves 17 towns in Addison County also was easily approved as warned.

Middlebury approves budget and resolutions

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents easily passed all financial requests at their annual gathering on Monday and then went to the polls on Tuesday to help decide a contested race for three Addison Central School District board seats and a $37,794,916 budget to fund K-12 public education in the Addison Central School District.

Rough winter puts stress on local salt, sand budgets

Middlebury mourns the loss of former town clerk Dick Goodro

MIDDLEBURY — Friends and former colleagues of longtime Middlebury Town Clerk and Treasurer Richard “Dick” Goodro recalled him as a warm human being, jovial jokester and tireless worker who was a walking encyclopedia.

Goodro died on Friday, Feb. 22, at age 75 at his home in Ormond Beach, Fla. (click here to read his obituary). He succumbed to the effects of pulmonary fibrosis, according to family members.

Mary Johnson's Saunders to retire after long childcare career

MIDDLEBURY — It’s Monday morning at Middlebury’s Mary Johnson Children’s Center (MJCC), and the ambiance is like Grand Central Station.

Staff are busy ushering a group of children outdoors for playtime.

Others are helping kids pick up well-used toys and books.

The intoxicating odor of a home-cooked meal wafts from the kitchen, signaling lunchtime is not far away.

Each scene is enveloped in a cacophony of young voices, some registering astounding decibel levels.

Anglers fuel rally to save Salisbury fish hatchery

SALISBURY — State officials and leaders of several hunting and fishing organizations are exploring license fee increases among other possible financial remedies to avert a shutdown of the Salisbury Fish Culture Station. The facility supplies all the broodstock for rainbow, lake, brown and brook trout for stocking Vermont waterways.

Effort to ban plastic bags gains steam

MIDDLEBURY — Supporters of a proposal to ban single-use plastic bags for retail transactions in Middlebury are ramping up their lobbying, and sewing, efforts as a critical town vote on the issue nears.

Middlebury voters on March 5 will decide whether to encourage their selectboard to draft an ordinance that would prevent local retailers from offering customers single-use plastic bags to carry out their purchases.
