Middlebury petition to force vote on town office and gym proposal

MIDDLEBURY — Former Middlebury selectboard Chairman John Tenny will help lead a citizens’ petition drive to ensure the 2014 Town Meeting Day ballot includes a bond vote for a new municipal building and a new recreation center.

Tenny announced the petition drive at a Middlebury selectboard meeting on Tuesday evening prior to the board’s revote on a term sheet between the town and Middlebury College outlining a town-gown collaboration on the two building projects.

Iconic church eyes $2.6m in upgrades

MIDDLEBURY — Members of the Congregational Church of Middlebury a few years ago celebrated the 200th birthday of their picturesque place of worship at the top of Main Street. The flock is now seeking to prepare the church for its next 200 years with a $2.6 million capital improvement plan that includes repairing the front steps, upgrading the kitchen and placing a classroom addition onto the north side of the majestic building.

Radio's Bruce & Hobbes publish their first book

MIDDLEBURY — Many Addison County residents know “Hobbes” as the irrepressible little dachshund who has joined radio personality Bruce Zeman on the local airwaves for the past three years.

Well, Hobbes is now expanding his nascent media empire to print. With his owner Bruce Zeman lending him a voice, Hobbes in November will star in the first of potentially five children’s books that will tell the story of his rescue from an abusive home and hopefully help kids avoid and overcome similar situations.

Shrek' sets stage for family reunion

MIDDLEBURY — Serena Eddy-Guiles has used the stage as a dramatic platform on which to share her creativity in dozens of theater productions throughout high school, and well into adulthood with the Middlebury Community Players.

All those past performances are leading up to what Eddy-Guiles anticipates could be the most memorable role in her life: Sharing the stage with three generations of her family as part of The Company at Town Hall Theater’s staging of “Shrek the Musical,” which opens this Thursday, Nov. 7.

MALT returns to roots of trail development, maintenance

MIDDLEBURY — It wasn’t too long ago that the Middlebury Area Land Trust (MALT) had temporarily strayed into a wilderness of financial challenges and a fractured vision.

But the organization has now found a solid trail back to what had been its primary focus: Maintaining and strengthening its crown jewel, the Trail Around Middlebury, which is known locally as the TAM.

Credit Union opens new Middlebury branch

Official 'cultivates' idea for aid from nonprofit groups

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Planning Commission Chairwoman Nancy Malcolm realizes that most local nonprofits don’t have a lot of green in the bank. But she is hoping that representatives of those nonprofits have green thumbs to help tend to public gardens as a way of giving back to the community in return for their tax-exempt status.

Weybridge kids build bridges to the future

WEYBRIDGE — Weybridge Elementary School is taking very seriously its mission of building students a bridge to a better future.

In fact, every student in the small community school spent last week building a total of 10 bridges — not in the same vein as Middlebury’s $16 million Cross Street Bridge that can support multi-ton vehicles, but rather tiny spans made out of popsicle sticks designed to withstand at least 5 pounds of weight.
