ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont Gas Systems and International Paper Co. on Wednesday announced a $70 million pact through which the South Burlington-based utility would supply natural gas to the paper company’s Ticonderoga, N.Y., mill as soon as 2015.

The agreement, contingent on approval by the Vermont Public Service Board, calls for a 10.5-mile pipeline to be built under Lake Champlain as an offshoot of the Addison Natural Gas Project that has already been pitched to extend natural gas service south from Chittenden County into Vergennes and Middlebury.

Clippings: Peace message highly guarded

I began reporting for the Addison Independent way back in 1990, but there are times when it seems like it was only yesterday that I picked up my first notepad to research such stories as Olin Robison retiring as Middlebury College president; Gov. Madeleine Kunin electing to take a pass on another term; and Hannah’s Market closing in downtown Vergennes.

McMullen makes drug crime, tort reform priorities

MIDDLEBURY — Burlington Republican Jack McMullen has perhaps best been known in Vermont’s political circles for having been unable to identify the correct number of teats on a cow when put on the spot by his irrepressible U.S. Senate GOP primary opponent Fred Tuttle in 1998.

Fourteen years later, McMullen himself is chuckling about that legendary misstep and is touting his credentials as a candidate for Vermont attorney general, a post he hopes to wrest from longtime Democratic incumbent Bill Sorrell.

MIDDLEBURY — Kate Gridley’s South Street art studio continues to draw visits from a “Who’s Who” in the world of politics, law and academia.

And it has nothing to do with this being an election year.

The Middlebury artist recently drew acclaim for immortalizing former Vermont Gov. James Douglas on canvas, a portrait that was hung in the Statehouse.

Middlebury board lifts big-box limit from town plan

Posted on October 11, 2012 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday continued to make its own tweaks to the town plan update, with the most prominent revision being a move to remove a reference to a 50,000-square-foot cap on new retail proposals. The board replaced mention of that cap with a stipulation that retail store applications must be consistent with the town’s zoning ordinances, noted Middlebury selectboard Vice-Chairman Victor Nuovo.

MIDDLEBURY — It was indeed police gunfire — and not a self-inflicted wound — that caused the death of George Demarais, a 57-year-old Middlebury man who on Thursday, Oct. 4, allegedly challenged authorities to take his life.

Middlebury police Chief Tom Hanley confirmed on Monday that Demarais had sustained two bullet wounds, one each to the chest and neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene following what had been a 30- to 40-minute gunfight in the woods behind his home at 5454 Case St. (Route 116).
