MIDDLEBURY — For 18 years, Holly Hathaway and her family have lived in a pastoral Shangri-la. Their Halladay Road home features panoramic views of the majestic Adirondacks to the west and is surrounded by fertile green pastures that form an agrarian quilt on display from their backyard swimming pool.

WEYBRIDGE — Local lawmakers on Monday cited the so-called “provider tax” as a prime reason the state should scrap the current health care system and adopt a single-payer plan.

The House recently passed an increase in the provider tax that is assessed to hospitals, home health care agencies and other providers. It has now been extended to third-party health insurance claims.

Band debuts from the middle school of rock

MIDDLEBURY — The newest act to perform at Middlebury’s 51 Main plays some down-and-dirty rock ’n roll, but let’s just say all three members lead pretty clean lives.

No one in the band drinks or smokes. None of the three has thrown an amp out of a hotel room window. In fact, all of them pretty much have a prescribed bedtime, rehearse at a local church and need to be driven to gigs by their parents.

Middlebury refines fire station plans

MIDDLEBURY — An ad hoc committee studying the prospect of upgrading Middlebury Fire Department facilities is close to deciding on a preferred option that will likely be fielded by voters next Town Meeting Day.

Some members of the town’s fire station study committee delivered that update to the Middlebury selectboard on Monday, along with news that maintaining stations on Seymour Street and in East Middlebury is gaining more support than the notion of erecting a single new facility on Route 7 South.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters on Tuesday voted 75 to 17 in favor of affirming a $3 million bond issue to finance various road improvement projects throughout town.

The second Australian ballot vote was needed to affirm a Town Meeting Day vote of 467 to 158 in favor of the bond. That initial vote was improperly warned and therefore had to be ratified.

The proposed 20-year, $3 million bond issue is to take care of 17 different road improvement projects that might otherwise linger on the drawing board.
