MIDDLEBURY — Waterfront Video in May will end what has been a 13-year run in Middlebury’s Marble Works complex.

Waterfront Manager Adrienne Perry cited building issues and a changing movie rental industry as the primary reasons for the business’s decision to vacate the roughly 2,200-square-foot spot it has been occupying since the summer of 1998.

Waterfront will continue to operate its flagship store in Burlington.

MIDDLEBURY — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Monday praised lawmakers for supporting a 2011 legislative agenda he predicted will lift the state to economy to heights unseen since the tech boom of the 1990s.

United Way donations lagging as aid requests continue to rise

MIDDLEBURY — The United Way of Addison County (UWAC) has raised 92 percent ($712,135) of its 2010 fund-raising goal of $775,000 and will soon begin the very painstaking process of allocating funds to the many local nonprofits serving residents in need.

This is the second year in a row that the local United Way has set a goal of $775,000 and fallen just shy of the finish line — though the books don’t technically close on the campaign until June 30 and people still have time to donate. Last year, UWAC reached 95 percent of the goal.

Middlebury road bond vote set for April 12

Posted on April 7, 2011 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters on Tuesday, April 12, will vote for a second time on a $3 million bond issue to finance various road improvement projects throughout town.

The second Australian ballot vote, to take place at the municipal building, is needed to affirm a Town Meeting Day vote of 467 to 158 in favor of the bond. That initial vote was improperly warned and therefore must be ratified.

“It is to take care of the glitch,” Middlebury Town Manager Bill Finger said of the second referendum.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Rotary Club members this month are hoping to double the success of last year’s on-line auction that netted around $5,000 for local charitable causes.

Titled “Bidding for Good,” Rotary’s third annual on-line auction has already received 175 donated items with a combined retail value of around $17,000, according to Scott Needham, co-chair of the club’s auction committee.

“We should end up with 180 to 190 items, with a retail value of around $18,000,” Needham said.

MIDDLEBURY — It would be an understatement to say that Gary Barclay’s first day as a Middlebury police officer was a case of baptism by fire.

It was 1971. The Vietnam War was still raging and President Richard Nixon was in the White House. Barclay, then 25, had recently dropped off an application at the Middlebury Police Department in hopes of securing some part-time work in a field that appealed to him.

Then the call came. It was from then-Middlebury Police Chief Robert Van Ness.

ADDISON COUNTY — A Chittenden County-based utility is working on a $60 million-$70 million plan to extend natural gas pipeline through Vergennes and Middlebury within the next five years.

Proponents contend the project would offer a cheaper, cleaner heating fuel source for area businesses and homes; though some critics urge that environmental and cost claims not be taken at face value.
