Weybridge eyes school's future

WEYBRIDGE — Weybridge residents on Sept. 13 will gather for the first of several upcoming community forums to offer their views on how their local elementary school should be governed and managed during a future that will likely be marked by continuing low enrollment.

The meeting will be the first in a series of discussions in all seven Addison Central Supervisory Union towns on whether the district should consider consolidating its governance structure and/or more effectively share resources in acknowledgment of growing expenses and fewer students.

Witherell joins Shoreham board

SHOREHAM — The Shoreham selectboard has selected longtime resident and former orchardist Sanford Witherell to join its ranks until the March elections. Witherell fills a spot recently vacated by Selectwoman Marthe Fisher, who stepped down on July 15 amid increasing professional and family commitments.

Witherell and his family owned and operated the Noggin Orchard in Shoreham until around two years ago, when Champlain Orchards acquired the property.

Noted designer sees span as homecoming

MIDDLEBURY — Thousands of eyes will be fixed on the massive, 402-foot-long center span and arch when it makes its two-mile trek by barge from Port Henry, N.Y., to fill what is now a gaping hole in the framework of the new bridge spanning Lake Champlain from Addison, Vt., to Crown Point, N.Y.

Lake Champlain Bridge opening celebration postponed

ADDISON — A bi-state celebration of the opening of the new Champlain Bridge originally scheduled for mid-October has been postponed until May because organizers could not get a guarantee from New York transportation officials that the new span will be completed on time.

An ad hoc Lake Champlain Bridge Community (LCBC) panel, made up of more than 50 volunteers from Vermont and New York, has been planning a two-day celebration to mark the unveiling of the $70 million Champlain Bridge that will link West Addison with Crown Point, N.Y.

Middlebury hires its future manager

MIDDLEBURY — Former Middlebury Assistant Town Manager Kathleen Ramsay will reclaim her old job this fall and will transition into the community’s top administrative job within a year, local officials confirmed on Tuesday.

Ramsay, 46, originally left the town’s employ in 2007 after seven years in order to become town manager of Pittsford. After a year in Pittsford, she moved on to become town manager of Killington, where she will continue to work before returning to Middlebury in mid-October.

Area House districts intact in Vt. reapportionment proposal

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Apportionment Board (VAB) last week voted 4-2 on a final recommendation for redrawing boundaries for the Vermont House of Representatives that leaves most Addison County districts the way they are now.

Lawmakers will discuss VAB proposals for the House and Vermont Senate during the 2012 legislative session before voting on a final reapportionment plan.

Bus hits 75-year-old woman in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police are investigating an Aug. 10 traffic accident that seriously injured a 75-year-old Washington, D.C., woman who was struck by an Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) bus at the intersection of Merchants Row and Main Street.

Police said the woman, identified at Anne Curtis Odom, was struck in the roadway at around 3:35 p.m. and sustained “severe traumatic injuries.”
