Governor takes jabs, touts record during Bristol event

BRISTOL — Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin on Monday used what will be his last legislative luncheon appearance in Addison County to trumpet what he believes have been his top accomplishments, and he also took heat from some of his opponents on issues such as the Addison Natural Gas Project.

Migrant worker charged with three felonies

PANTON — A local migrant worker pleaded innocent on March 11 in Rutland District Court, criminal division, to three felony charges — including kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault — stemming from a Feb. 18 incident in Panton during which he allegedly held a woman against her will and forced her to have intercourse with him.

The defendant in the case is 25-year-old Gustavo Perez-Lopez, who is currently being held without bail at the Marble Valley Correctional Center in Rutland.

U.S. Forest Service to close Middlebury Office

MIDDLEBURY — The United States Forest Service (USFS) headquarters on Route 7 in Middlebury will be vacated and sold within the next three years, as the federal government looks to consolidate some of its resources throughout the country.

This news was confirmed on Tuesday by USFS Ranger Christopher Mattrick, who manages the Rochester/Middlebury district of the Green Mountain National Forest. Mattrick disclosed the news as part of a March 8 update on local USFS activities to the new Middlebury selectboard.

Locals contribute to 'Raiders' movie remake, which will be screened at Marquis

MIDDLEBURY — They’ll be rolling out the proverbial red carpet at Middlebury’s Marquis Theater this Wednesday night at 7 p.m. for the premier of a true cinematic blockbuster: “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

What’s that you say? Wasn’t that movie, starring Harrison Ford, released back in 1981? Is this an updated version with a couple of minutes of extra footage?

Nope.

Utility truck kills flagger on Route 7 in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — A 75-year-old Wallingford man who was working as a traffic flagger on Route 7 just south of Three Mile Bridge Road was struck and killed by a utility truck on Friday morning.

Lawrence Kaminski was working for Green Mountain Flaggers Inc. when he was hit by a Eustis Cable Enterprises Ltd. truck driven by Tommy Carrier, 50, of Jericho.

UPDATE: Police identify the man who was killed.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police continue to investigate a fatal accident on Route 7 south on Friday morning in which a utility vehicle backed into a flagger and killed him.

Middlebury Police Sgt. Mike Christopher said the accident occurred in the southbound breakdown lane of Route 7, just a little south of the intersection with Three Mile Bridge Road. Christopher said the utility truck was carrying workers in the process of stringing cable for a utility company.

Carpenter, Artim elected to Middlebury selectboard posts in close votes

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury on Tuesday experienced an additional flurry of election fireworks following the array of local and national electoral pyrotechnics that lit up polling places on March 1.

In a series of two 4-3 votes, Middlebury selectboard members selected Brian Carpenter as their new chairman and retained Nick Artim as their vice chairman.

Porter responds to public discontent, trustees admit 'rushed' process on physician contracts

MIDDLEBURY — Members of Porter Medical Center board on Wednesday conceded what they now believe was too rapid a roll-out of new contract terms for the organization’s 33 physicians, and they vowed to become more inclusive and transparent in communicating what have been some major changes within Porter’s hospital, nursing home and 12 physicians’ practices.

Declaring a “mea culpa,” they said they said they would take the current contract with physicians off the table and start anew.

GOP candidate for governor Lisman seeks government accountability

MIDDLEBURY — Retired Wall Street executive Bruce Lisman believes Vermont’s governor should run the state more like a business. And as a former high-level administrator at Bear Stearns, Lisman said he has developed the necessary skills to help make key decisions about Vermont’s future and to treat citizens like “valued clients” instead of simply as taxpayers.
