'Shine A Light' goes national

BRISTOL — It was two years ago that Bristol-based artist Stephanie Larsen came up with an idea for a “Shine A Light” fundraiser to enlighten the Addison County community about domestic violence and sexual abuse. Local artists decorated lamps that were auctioned off to generate money for abuse-awareness programs.

Drug testing company to launch Middlebury branch

MIDDLEBURY — A drug testing company will soon move into a 1,200-square-foot vacancy in the Star Mill building in Middlebury’s Frog Hollow district.

The company is called Burlington Labs, a Burlington-based company that performs urinalysis and oral fluid testing to screen for around 25 different drugs, including opiates, cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana, alcohol and barbiturates.

Alpine Bingam lawsuit charges town office decision was 'unduly influenced'

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury man has filed a civil lawsuit against the town of Middlebury, Middlebury College, the Addison Independent and Bread Loaf Corp., alleging their collective actions “unduly influenced” the electorate prior to votes held earlier this year on a $6.5 million municipal building/recreation center project.

County to feature four House races and one primary

MIDDLEBURY — A primary runoff will be required to whittle down the Democrat candidates vying in the Addison-1 House district this November, while the county’s two incumbent state senators face no challengers in their re-election bids.

That’s just part of the 2014 election picture, which became clearer this week following the June 12 filing deadline for candidates vying for statewide offices as well as Vermont House and Senate seat and county offices.

First Vermont Gran Fondo seen as a success

ADDISON COUNTY — Organizers of the first annual Vermont Gran Fondo bicycling event this past Saturday say the event was a success and they plan to hold an even better event next year. The event drew 181 registrants. Of those, 160 starters pedaled their way through various cycling distances in and around Addison County on June 14, leaving organizers optimistic the event will have some staying power.

ACTR bus drivers defeat union bid

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Transit Resources bus drivers on June 11 voted 9-8 against unionizing through Teamsters Local 597.

Nadine Barnicle, community relations manager for ACTR, said the organization is committed to working with the drivers to resolve any issues that prompted them to take a union vote.

“We’re really confident we can all work together,” Barnicle said.

Teamsters Local 597 spokesman Tony St. Hilaire did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Cornwall and Bridport both need interim principals next year

CORNWALL — Two of the Addison Central Supervisory Union’s seven elementary schools — Bridport Central and Cornwall’s Bingham Memorial — will be led by interim leaders next year while permanent principals are being recruited this coming winter.

Peter Burrows, ACSU superintendent, confirmed last week that former Mary Hogan Elementary School Principal Bonnie Bourne and current Ripton Elementary Principal Tracey Harrington will co-manage Bridport Central for the 2014-2015 academic year.

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Regional Planning Commission (ACRPC) on Wednesday, June 11, narrowly rejected a request from the town of Cornwall that the panel rescind its earlier vote indicating a majority opinion that Vermont Gas’s proposed Phase II pipeline could comply with the county’s regional plan.

MIDDLEBURY — Around 80 people took to the podium at the Middlebury Union High School auditorium on Thursday to urge the Vermont Public Service Board to reject Vermont Gas’s proposed natural gas pipeline that would extend from Middlebury to the International Paper Co. mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y.
