GMB: Former worker stole cider secrets for rival brand

Flooding sets stage for mosquitoes

ADDISON COUNTY AND BRANDON — Usually, more water means more mosquitoes. But this record-breaking spring of rainfall has created so much water — particularly of the moving variety — that floodplain-borne mosquitoes have had a tough time multiplying, according to state and local insect-control officials.

ACSU picks Conley as interim head

MIDDLEBURY — Former Chittenden East Supervisory Union Superintendent Gail B. Conley will serve as interim leader of the Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) for the 2011-2012 academic year beginning on July 1.

Conley’s hiring, confirmed by ACSU board Chairman Mark Perrin on Tuesday, will partially fill what was looming as a substantial administrative vacuum in the district office created by the imminent departure of current ACSU Superintendent Lee Sease and the recent resignation of longtime Business Manager Sharon Stearns.

Middlebury balks at expedited review of Otter Creek Falls hydro plan

MUHS's Dunleavy ready for next chapter

MIDDLEBURY — Frankie Dunleavy often tells her students that a foreign language is like a puzzle. It’s a puzzle that has already been created; it’s up to the student to put together the pieces.

Dunleavy has helped hundreds of students put together those pieces during her more than three decades as a language teacher at Middlebury Union High School.

She’s now ready for the next challenge. She’ll wrap up her last class at MUHS next week.

“It’s time to move on,” she said during a recent interview.

Middlebury parcel comes into focus

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College and town officials are working on plans to create a legal entity able to field development offers for a 1.5-acre piece of property behind the Ilsley Library in downtown Middlebury.

The land in question is jointly owned by the town and college and has been identified as a logical spot for a mixed-use project that could draw more businesses and shoppers to the downtown area. A special committee was formed last year to oversee planning for the so-called Economic Development Initiative, also known as EDI.

Salisbury to mark 250th with scavenger hunt, parade

SALISBURY — Salisbury residents will have several opportunities to mark their town’s 250th birthday this summer, through such activities as an essay writing contest, a historical scavenger hunt and a parade.

The festivities kick off this Wednesday when he Salisbury Conservation Commission “An Historical Perspective on Land Use and Wildlife in Salisbury” at the Salisbury Community School at 7 p.m.

Students design art for town's roundabout

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College students have done some homework for a committee exploring potential centerpieces for the new Main Street roundabout.

The 13 students, enrolled in the college’s spring course “Introduction to Architectural Design,” recently produced a series of intriguing drawings and miniature models of sculptures they believe could fill the roundabout void in an artful and utilitarian manner.

Good Point secures e-waste contracts for three states

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury-based Good Point Recycling has won electronic waste handling contracts for New York and Rhode Island and is close to finalizing a similar deal with Vermont as it further burnishes its reputation as one of the world’s pre-eminent e-waste recyclers.

The company has also broadened its business plan by serving as a broker for low-cost, refurbished computers, funneling them to classrooms and blossoming businesses in a half-dozen economically developing countries thirsting for tools to join the global economy.
