ACSU reboots search for new superintendent

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory union board will re-advertise the school district’s superintendent vacancy in wake of an initial search that concluded on Thursday without producing an acceptable candidate.

Gail Conley, the ACSU’s interim superintendent, said the position will now be re-advertised in conjunction with the soon-to-be-vacant associate superintendent position. Associate Superintendent Jan Willey has tendered her resignation effective at the end of the school year.

While Vt. birthrate drops, Porter numbers remain consistent

MIDDLEBURY — While Vermont’s population continues to get grayer, Porter Hospital’s Birthing Center is attracting a consistent, healthy flow of expectant parents — a clientele that is also coming from outside Addison County.

Statistics covering the past five years show annual births at the Middlebury hospital hovering around the 300 mark. Specifically, number of babies born at the Birthing Center were as follows:

•  288 in 2007.

•  340 in 2008.

•  299 in 2009.

Another ACSU executive leaves

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) is in the market for yet another senior administrator. Associate Superintendent Jan Willey has tendered her resignation in a move she said was fueled by what she described as ongoing “turmoil” in the ACSU central office.

Willey’s departure, effective at the end of this academic year, is one of several administrative positions within the district that will be, or already have been, vacated during the past year under some strained circumstances.

Middlebury riverfront plan OK'd

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday voted unanimously to spend $70,000 from the town’s conservation fund to beautify and improve public access to the riverfront area of the Marble Works that fronts the Otter Creek falls.

The riverfront area has long been targeted for improvements that would attract shoppers, tourists and locals who would have a safer, better-groomed area from which to view the spectacular Otter Creek falls from the Marble Works complex.

Personal liberties take center stage

BRIDPORT — Monday’s season-opening legislative breakfast in Bridport offered a preview of two emotional debates on personal freedom that could play out on a grander scale this spring in the Statehouse.

At issue: Should families be given broader rights to have their children opt-out of vaccines designed to protect them from deadly diseases, and should terminally ill people be allowed to opt-in to a proposal that would allow them to take their own lives under medical supervision.

Moat's play focuses on a family's secrets

MIDDLEBURY — Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, author and playwright David Moats is hoping to convince area drama enthusiasts to spend an afternoon in France with the “Branch family” next week.

And those who accept his invitation needn’t board a plane or pack their bags. “An Afternoon in France” promises to be a fast-moving, 75-minute journey into a family’s deepest secrets that Moats will deliver four times on stage at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater from Feb. 16 to 19.

New ACTR building in sight

Town seeks delay in review of hydro plan

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury has asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to dismiss Middlebury Electric LLC’s (ME) draft license application for a small hydroelectric plant at the Otter Creek falls until ME has had more interaction with the town on its proposal.

The request is contained in a Feb. 3 letter and brief submitted to FERC Secretary Kimberly Bose by attorney Matthew Manahan, a Portland, Maine, attorney the Middlebury selectboard has hired to represent the town’s interests.
