n Bray suggests per parcel ChrisBray9612.jpg

MONTPELIER — Debate in Montpelier surrounding efforts to clean up the state’s waterways has been surging like the Otter Creek in April, but legislative action on funding for those efforts has been moving at a glacial pace.

With that in mind, Sen. Chris Bray, D-New Haven, is suggesting Vermont adopt a per-parcel fee that would yield $18.8 million of the estimated $30 million the state will need to raise during each of the next 20 years as its share of a federally mandated, $2.6 billion cleanup of Lake Champlain and related waterways.

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County businesses, institutions and individuals could play a larger role in donating food to low-income residents if there were more storage space, transportation options and publicity about the need for such contributions, according to a recent study of the local food system completed by a group of Middlebury College students.

The report, which will soon be delivered to the Addison County Hunger Council, also hints at a potential upcoming spike in food donations due to Vermont’s Act 148.

MIDDLEBURY — Stewards of Middlebury’s Memorial Sports Center have embarked on a new fund drive that would result in the long-awaited completion of the second floor of the 24-year-old community recreational facility that has served as the much-used home for Addison County ice hockey programs.

Specifically, boosters of the Memorial Sports Center, or MSC, want to raise $350,000 for a project that would, among other things, create a heated viewing area, elevator access and public restrooms for the top floor of the sports center.

Bank offers Printer's Alley property to Middlebury

Posted on December 4, 2017 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectboard last Tuesday agreed to consider an offer by the National Bank of Middlebury to convey to the town (at no charge) Printer’s Alley.

That alley connects Main Street to the Marble Works complex. It has come into sharper focus in recent months because of its proximity to the ongoing downtown rail bridges project. Printer’s Alley was closed to one-way vehicle traffic this past spring when a temporary bridge was installed on Main Street. The alley has remained open to pedestrian traffic.

VERGENNES — At just three weeks old, tiny Hunter holds the distinction of being the youngest resident of the John W. Graham Emergency Shelter in Vergennes.

He doesn’t realize he and his 28-year-old mom, Sammie, don’t have a home of their own.

But Sammie plans to change all that, and she’s getting a big lift from John Graham Housing & Services (JGHS), the nonprofit that runs the Vergennes shelter and five multi-unit apartment buildings in the county.
