ADDISON, Vt./CROWN POINT, N.Y. — Contractors have completed most of the underwater sub-structure of the new Champlain Bridge and will work through the winter on some of the more visible elements of the new span that is slated to be finished by Oct. 9, 2011.

New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) officials on Thursday provided their first substantial, on-location update on progress in building the new bridge, a $70 million project being undertaken by Colorado-based Flatiron Construction.

Lemon Fair Bridge opens up early to traffic

CORNWALL — The new Lemon Fair Bridge on Route 125 in Cornwall officially opened to traffic on Nov. 23 — substantially ahead of schedule, though the project won’t be fully completed until next spring.

Vermont Agency of Transportation resident engineer Joe Knipes noted the project hadn’t been scheduled for completion until Nov. 4, 2011. But contractors — Montgomery-based A.L. St. Onge — were able to give extra attention to the project this summer and fall as a result of the challenging economy and good weather, according to Knipes.

Gossens to play role in reapportionment

Posted on December 2, 2010 |
By John Flowers

SALISBURY — When former state Sen. Gerry Gossens retired from the Legislature six years ago, the Salisbury Democrat never imagined he would later have a hand in potentially reshaping the composition of the chamber he was leaving.

But he now finds himself in that position, as a member of the Vermont Apportionment Board (VAB), a seven-member panel that will redraw House and Senate district lines taking into consideration the new decennial census numbers and in a manner that is consistent with the Constitutional standard of one-person-one-vote.

Shoreham residents to determine the future of town offices on Dec. 7

Posted on December 2, 2010 |
By John Flowers

SHOREHAM — Shoreham voters will got to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 7, to pick one of two possible makeovers for their town offices — or decide not to make any changes at all.

Around 100 residents gathered on Monday, Nov. 29, to hear presentations on two options for replacing the current 20-foot-by-30-foot municipal office building on the town commons. The current offices were built in 1962 as a one-person set-up with one typewriter and one phone.
The two options include:

Clippings: Satellite radio not a serious option

After wringing much of the goodness out of my old vehicle over the course of seven-plus years, we recently invested in a new set of wheels. My wish-list going into the substantial purchase: that it be an American vehicle with a good Consumer Reports ranking and safety record; have enough cargo space for dump/recycling runs; and that it be capable of towing my late father’s small, barely seaworthy boat that I refuse to junk and use occasionally for fishing jaunts on Bristol Pond.

Middlebury orders study to pin down rail station location

Posted on November 29, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury is applying for a $15,000 federal grant to plan for a local, passenger rail station in anticipation of ramped-up train service along the western part of the state.

Middlebury Town Manager Bill Finger said making progress toward a passenger rail station would also likely enhance the community’s chances for landing federal aid to replace the two railroad underpasses on Main Street and Merchants Row. Those two underpass projects have been on the Vermont Agency of Transportation’s to-do list for several years.

MIDDLEBURY — An ad hoc committee studying the feasibility of a major retail-commercial-residential project on town- and college-owned land behind Middlebury’s Ilsley Public Library will update the public on its work early next year.

At issue is an “Economic Development Initiative (EDI)” being crafted by the town and Middlebury College. It’s a project intended to complement the recently completed Cross Street Bridge and the new entrepreneurial opportunities the new downtown structure could present.

MIDDLEBURY — The ID-4 Second Language Committee is recommending that Mary Hogan Elementary School begin offering a Spanish program beginning next fall — initially to students in grades K-2, but ultimately to all grades by the 2015-2016 academic year.

The recommendation, made to the ID-4 school board on Nov. 22, comes after almost a year of study following a petitioned request by more than 90 residents seeking resumption of world language instruction at Mary Hogan. The school dropped French classes several years ago, primarily due to financial reasons.
