MIDDLEBURY — The UD-3 school board last week began to discuss the concept of installing a turf field at Middlebury Union High School.

At the same May 17 meeting the board agreed to open the boys’ and girls’ ice hockey programs to a limited number of players from other schools.

School board members last Tuesday were told that a turf field at the high school would provide a more stable, weather-friendly surface for multiple MUHS sports teams.

Clippings: Family in no hurry to empty the nest

Posted on May 19, 2011 |
By John Flowers

It seems like eons ago, but I can remember my parents talking about the prospect of being empty nesters with a sense of wonderment and (gasp) anticipation. My dad spoke of converting my room into storage for his gargantuan stamp collection, while mom talked about being able to travel with less baggage (could she really have been talking about me?).

All of a sudden, the clock struck “18” and I was no longer flinging open the door, waltzing to my room and shouting “What’s for dinner?” on the way up the stairs.

VERGENNES — It was a chilly Feb. 15, and Rep. Greg Clark, R-Vergennes, knew he shouldn’t be perspiring. But he was.

Clark, 63, had just returned to his room in the Hilltop Inn in Berlin, where he stays during the legislative session. He had just attended a GOP caucus, ironically on the issue of health care legislation, and was starting to feel ill.

MONTPELIER — Local lawmakers said they will remember the 2011 legislative session for being short on funds but long on accomplishments and punctuality.

The gavel fell on the session on Friday, May 6 — one week ahead of schedule and in spite of a very busy agenda that included health care reform and a fiscal year 2012 budget that was $176 million in the red at the outset.

MIDDLEBURY — Gov. Peter Shumlin said on Monday he could not have imagined a more successful inaugural legislative session as the state’s new chief executive officer.

“It was truly extraordinary,” Shumlin said of the 2011 Legislature’s accomplishments, which included passing health care reform; balancing a fiscal year 2012 budget that was saddled with a $176 million revenue shortfall and no federal stimulus funds; and advancing the administration’s goal of extending wireless broadband access to all parts of the state by 2013.

Cohn reflects on maritime museum's steady growth

FERRISBURGH — There was a time when Art Cohn believed the heaviest lifting associated with establishing the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum (LCMM) would be setting up its first rudimentary headquarters near the Basin Harbor Club in Ferrisburgh.

That feat occurred a little more than 25 year ago, when museum co-founders Cohn and Robert Beach Jr. spearheaded the dismantling of Panton’s old stone schoolhouse on Lake Road, then relocated and reassembled it — piece by piece — at the then-barren, four-acre LCMM campus.
