MIDDLEBURY — The Better Middlebury Partnership (BMP) has minted some new currency to promote downtown shopping, as well as the downtown itself.

The BMP has produced a new version of the “Middlebury Money,” checks that can be purchased in various denominations for transactions at local retail, dining and lodging establishments. Middlebury Money was first “minted” around 15 years ago. At its peak, approximately $27,000 worth of Middlebury money was sold in one year, sparking business for local merchants and service providers.

MIDDLEBURY — “Challenges for Change” has largely been portrayed as an effort by the Douglas administration and the 2010 Legislature to save $38 million in state spending by making government programs more lean and efficient.

And while the new directive has sent many public entities scrambling to make deep cuts, a few enterprising nonprofits are poised to receive some budget increases for some innovative programs that could help the state save more money in the long run to meet the Challenges goal.

MIDDLEBURY — Jutta Miska on Monday recalled setting up a makeshift gathering spot for area teens around 17 years ago in the Middlebury Recreation Department’s old warming hut.

Local teens took to the space, but it was available only for a few years. And thus the seemingly perennial quest for a Middlebury teen center slogged on.

Until now.

Trash district eyes level tipping fee, lower rates

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Solid Waste Management District (ACSWMD) board is considering a 2011 budget of $2,410,761 that reflects a 1.9-percent increase in spending, but would not result in any boost in tipping fees at the district transfer station in Middlebury.
In fact, disposal fees for some recyclables are projected to go down, due to a more lucrative market for such items and because of the provisions of a new electronics waste law that will soon take effect.

Middlebury OKs study of fire station space needs

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard last Tuesday unanimously OK’d a $9,720 contract with Bread Loaf Corp. to help the fire department size up its space needs and determine whether its best option is to plan for on-site expansion or a new headquarters.
The Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department maintains two stations — a primary facility on Seymour Street and a branch station in East Middlebury. The Seymour Street station can barely contain current fire apparatus and will be unable to accommodate the next generation of vehicles.
